3 Moscow Mule: a brief history The Moscow Mule was famously born of an overabundance of supplies and a need to push product. John Martin had recently purchased Smirnoff distillery (early 1940s) and found himself with a surplus of vodka. Martin s friend, Jack Morgan, owned Cock n Bull bar in Los Angeles. Morgan was also swimming in a product he was pushing: his very own brand of ginger beer. He encouraged his bartenders to upsell the product, hence the birth of the Moscow Mule. Morgan claims his concoction was first served to actor Broderick Crawford. After that, the drink caught on like wildfire. Traditionally the drink is served with vodka, lime juice, ginger beer and angostura bitters in a copper mug.

5 Bramble: a brief history The Bramble is the brainchild of Dick Bradsell, a London Bartender who also designed two other famous cocktails; the Espresso Martini and the Russian Spring Punch. The blackberry drink is arguably the most famous of his creations from his time at Fred s Club Soho in the 1980 s, and is often compared to that of Jerry Thomas Gin Fix, swapping the latter s raspberry syrup for blackberry liqueur. The drink is said to take its name from the winding nature that the liqueur takes when it s poured from the top to the bottom of the glass, as though it were dodging through brambles.

8 Breakfast Martini: a brief history Cocktail maestro Salvatore Calabrese claims undisputed inventorship of the drink. One day in the late 1990s, the story goes that his wife insisted he at least try some toast with marmalade alongside his morning coffee. Signore Calabrese was highly impressed by the marmalade, albeit not quite as his wife intended, and the flavour inspired him to come up with a marmalade twist on a classic Gin Sour. In his own words: The zesty, tangy flavour inspired me and I kidnapped the marmalade and took it to work to experiment. It was during Calabrese s time at the Lanesborough Hotel s Library Bar that the final version was named the Breakfast Martini.

11 Vodka Martini: a brief history After World War II, Americans began celebrating all things and cocktails were a big part of that. Gin was still a popular spirit (second to whiskey) and many classic cocktails were based on gin. As vodka became more readily available, marketing carried vodka to new heights. With so much vodka flooding the market, bartenders needed a way to use it. The simple idea was to replace gin with vodka. The Gin Martini, when made with vodka, was originally called the Kangaroo cocktail or the Vodkatini. The biggest influence on the Vodka Martini s popularity though, was arguably the popular fictional character, James Bond. The Vodka Martini was first seen in the 1956 novel Diamonds are Forever and the famous direction, Shaken, not stirred, came two years later in Dr. No.
