Chairman s Welcome It s March so that means it s time for the Leicester CAMRA Beer Festival. Welcome all to the 2017 event. This is the eighteenth since our re-launch in 1999 following a ten-year absence. We are delighted to be back at the Charotar Patidar Samaj for the seventeenth time. As always, we are showcasing the brewing expertise of our Leicestershire and Rutland breweries on the dedicated Marconi bar. Many of these are LocAles being brewed within 25 miles as the crow flies from the festival site. There have been some changes to the brewing scene locally and these are reflected on the bar. Our festival is one of many that play a major role not just as fund raising, but also to keep people informed about CAMRA s work and the vast range of beers that are now available to the consumer. This continuous background work nationwide has doubtless helped change attitudes towards real ale. Our theme this year recalls the Marine and Broadcasting Act of 1967 which established local radio, a full explanation of which appears later on. A number of breweries have produced one-off brews in connection with this. Our festival glass incorporates the logo and is available in half pint tankard, goblet and straight pint. They are lined, oversized glasses to ensure a FULL MEASURE. We hope you like it and take one home as a souvenir. Our ever-popular Cider Bar has a selection of over 35 ciders and parries; some are old favourites and some new to the festival. Most of what we sell comes from small producers and it s all made from pressed and fermented KAREN BUGBY In late January Karen Bugby, who for many years was a key member of the festival team and doyen of the traditional food stall, succumbed to Motor Neurone Disease. It prevented her working at last year s festival and severely restricted her participation in CAMRA events in recent times. She received some respite care through LOROS and all the colleagues and friends who knew her would especially appreciate any support you give to our nominated charity this year. fresh juice from British grown apples or pears. For those requiring something other than Real Ale or Cider we also have a stall selling bottled beer and wines. Another innovation is to stock CAMRA-accredited Real Ale in a can from Moor Beer, available on the bottled beer stand. Another firm favourite are our Indian curries. Locally produced cold English food, tea, coffee and soft drinks are also available, and some different cob fillings are being trialled on Friday and Saturday this year. I would like to thank all the volunteers who work throughout the festival and whose support we depend on, Everards Brewery Limited for their continued generous help and support, AnchorPrint for design and printing and the numerous others who have helped make this event happen. Feedback from the event is always welcome, if you don t tell us we don t know! If on social media please use #leicbeerfest17. As in previous years, we are collecting for LOROS; please give generously to this good cause using the collection buckets around the hall. We do, as always, sympathise with any nominated drivers attending, so our soft drinks will be free of charge. Enjoy our Festival but please remember DON T DRINK AND DRIVE. Please note this Beer Festival is NON-SMOKING. If you wish to smoke please use the designated area outside. The use of e-cigarettes is also not permitted inside the building. Shawn Collier Branch Chairman and Beer Festival Organiser Leicester CAMRA wish to thank Everards Brewery Ltd for all their help, assistance and sponsorship of our beer festival. 3

What is CAMRA? CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is an independent, voluntary, consumer organisation which campaigns for real ale, real pubs and consumer rights. Membership is open to all individuals although corporate entities such as breweries and pubs are not members; we currently have approx 185,000 individual members nationally and our Leicester Branch currently has over 1,900 members. CAMRA is governed by a voluntary unpaid national executive, elected by the membership. We have a branch structure which means that all members can join a local CAMRA branch and campaign and socialise locally. There CAMRA s Success Story CAMRA is the most successful single issue consumer campaign group in Britain and is in its 46th year of campaigning. If CAMRA had not been formed to save real ale then this classic, great-tasting British drink would have become extinct. Since its formation in 1971 CAMRA has achieved the following: In the 1970s CAMRA successfully fought the efforts of the big brewers to replace traditional ales with tasteless keg beers. In the 1980s CAMRA lobbied against the lack of choice in Britain s pubs. In 1989 the Government responded with wide reaching reforms called the Beer Orders. The Beer Orders forced the big six brewers to sell or free from the tie over 11,000 as well as introducing the Guest Beer provision. In the 1990s CAMRA actively encouraged and supported real ale resurgence. During the decade CAMRA thwarted efforts by the EU Commission to abolish Britain s Guest Beer provision. Since 2000 CAMRA has succeeded in campaigning for the: Extension of mandatory rate relief to public houses Reform of the outdated licensing laws in England and Wales leading to a more flexible licensing system Introduction of reduced excise duty for small brewers which means that small brewers are able to compete on a more level playing field with the large brewers Abolition of the Beer Duty Escalator in CAMRA has run literally thousands of initiatives to promote and safeguard real ale and pubs including staging beer festivals, publishing books and guides, running Community Pubs Week and the Saving Your Local Pub which was launched by Prince Charles, producing a generic beer campaign, holding regular promotions for endangered beer styles and cider, producing national and regional inventories for pubs with interiors of historical significance and much more. are around 200 branches covering the UK and many of the branches run local beer festivals, publish local newsletters and run social events to pubs and breweries. Although we are a volunteer-led organisation there is also a small professional staff of twenty-five responsible for central campaigning, research, membership services, publishing, marketing and administration. CAMRA is financed through membership subscriptions, sales of products such as books and sweatshirts, and from the proceeds of beer festivals. We are a not-for-profit company, limited by guarantee and our accounts are lodged annually with Companies House. Why not join us? See one of our volunteers on the membership stall; they will be pleased to give you further information on how you can join our 1,900 Leicester Branch members. See also the benefits of joining CAMRA. We have regular branch meetings and an active social calendar; ranging from presentation of Pub of the Month awards to deserving licensees, to days out pub and brewery trips by coach/train. See our publication The Leicester Drinker in any of the local real ale pubs and get a handle on the local beer scene! 5 WELCOME TO LEICESTER BEER FESTIVAL 2017 WHAT SHOULD I DRINK? First time at a beer festival? Once you have paid your entrance fee you will need to collect your glass. Don t worry if you don t want to keep the glass, we will take the glass back when you have finished and refund the cost as long as you haven t damaged it (although they do make great souvenirs to take home!). You will find the beers numbered and in alphabetical order by brewery name. It is worth starting on the lower ABV (Alcohol by Volume) beers. Why not start with a Mild Beer? You can then sit down and decide what takes your fancy by reading the tasting notes in the programme. Work your way up through the bitters and best bitters at a steady pace before going for something stronger. Don t go for a strong 5.0 ABV straight away. Please remember that it is unusual for some of the beers to last through four days of the festival. If a particular beer is not available it is most likely someone has beaten you to it! Make sure you have something to eat during the session, there is nothing worse than drinking on an empty stomach and getting that fresh air attack when you leave. Fancy something different? Why not try one of our real ciders or perries? This is not the fizzy cider you get in most pubs but is produced by traditional independent farmhouse producers. They are 100% pure and natural but beware they are normally very strong. We have the largest variety of ciders and perries probably ever put together in Leicestershire. If it is busy at the bar and you have to wait a few minutes to get served please be patient and remember that we are all UNPAID VOLUNTEERS working hard on your behalf. We want to enjoy the festival just as much as you do. Have a great time! And remember to ask for real ale the next time you are in a pub. When taking your festival glass home make sure you take it off the premises in a bag, local byelaws state you must not carry a glass in the street with or without alcohol in it and you will also not be allowed on public transport with a glass in your hand. We will provide a carrier bag for you if required. FOOD WE HAVE A SELECTION OF ENGLISH FOOD AVAILABLE: Filled cobs, all freshly made by Brucciani of Leicester using locally produced ingredients Sausage rolls and pork pies from Gamble and Hollis of Syston We also have our own, authentic Curry House on site see the menu posted on the wall. This has proved to be a very popular feature at our festivals and one that makes them unique. Food Co-ordinator Richard Bird Please note last orders for curries will be 30 minutes before closing time. 5

FESTIVAL THEME ur theme this year marks 50 years of local radio. The Marine & Broadcasting Act of 1967 Oresulted from an upsurge in offshore Pirate radio stations, such as Radio Caroline, broadcasting to the UK from international waters. The Act closed a legal loophole causing many of the Pirates to close down but their popularity saw the BBC restructuring its own radio services, establishing Radios 1, 2, 3, & 4 and paving the way for local radio stations. The first of these was BBC Radio Leicester, which began broadcasting on 8th November 1967, beating stations in Sheffield, Merseyside and Nottingham by several weeks. In 1973 Independent stations began to appear and have developed along a variety of lines, from fully commercial to community stations. The invention of radio was a tortuous process, involving overlapping technologies that embraced transmission of light, power and sound. We ve chosen five radio heroes (Hertz, Bose, Tesla, Edison & Marconi) from the dozens whose combined knowledge got it all started. Scottish theoretical physicist James Clerk Maxwell mathematically predicted the existence of electromagnetic radiation of diverse wavelengths, but died in 1879 before his prediction was experimentally verified. B etween 1886 and 1888, German physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz ( ) was first to conclusively prove the existence of Maxwell s electromagnetic waves in free space by engineering instruments to transmit and receive radio pulses using experimental procedures that ruled out all other known wireless phenomena. These experiments established that light and these waves were both a form of electromagnetic radiation.his receiver was a simple half-wave dipole antenna with a micrometer spark gap between the elements and this experiment produced and received what are now called radio waves in the very high frequency (VHF) range. The unit of frequency cycle per second was named the hertz in his honour. Unfortunately, Hertz saw no practical importance in his experiments, famously stating It s of no use whatsoever. A commemorative lecture after Hertz s death on the quasi-optical nature of Hertzian waves caught the attention of scientists worldwide, including Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose ( ), a Bengali polymath and early science fiction writer, who pioneered the investigation of radio and microwave optics and, realising the disadvantages of long waves for studying their light-like properties, reduced the waves to the millimetre level (about 5 mm wavelength). Bose s work was specifically directed towards studying the nature of the phenomenon so, instead of trying to gain commercial benefit, Bose made his inventions public in order to allow others to further develop his research. During a demonstration in Kolkata, Bose ignited gunpowder and rang a bell at a distance using millimetre range wavelength microwaves, writing The invisible light can easily pass through brick walls, buildings etc. Therefore, messages can be transmitted by means of it without the mediation of wires. He had a major influence on other inventors, including Marconi whom he met in London. First to use a semiconductor junction to detect radio waves, he invented various now-commonplace microwave components. In 1897 he was using frequencies as high as 60 GHz and further work at these wavelengths was almost non-existent for another 50 years, testament to how advanced he was. A 1.3 mm multi-beam receiver in use on Arizona s NRAO 12 Metre Telescope, incorporates concepts from his original 1897 papers. erbian Nikola Tesla ( ) was an inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, physicist, Sand futurist best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system which earned him a considerable amount of money and became the cornerstone of Westinghouse Electric Co. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen and gained practical experience working in telephony and at Continental Edison NYC in the new electric power industry. Tesla set up laboratories and companies in New York to develop a range of electrical and mechanical devices he could patent, becoming well known as an inventor and noted for his showmanship at public demonstrations and lectures, very much the archetypal mad scientist. Learning of Hertz s experiments, Tesla found this new discovery refreshing and decided to explore it more fully.his main interest was in power transmission but he attempted to develop a wireless lighting system and conducted a series of impressive demonstrations. Although failing to make a commercial product, he frequently told onlookers that a system like his could eventually conduct intelligible signals or perhaps even power to any distance without the use of wires by conducting it through the Earth. He did, however, make great advances in remote control and demonstrated a radio-contolled boat at at Madison Square Garden. The crowd that witnessed it made outrageous claims about the boat s workings, such as magic, telepathy, and being piloted by a hidden trained monkey. Tesla tried to sell his idea to the U.S. military as a type of radio-controlled torpedo, but remote radio control remained a novelty until World War I. 8

Tesla embarked on some dramatically large experiments. In 1899, he told reporters that he planned to transmitsignals from Pikes Peak to Paris; during this time he observed unusual signals from his receiver which he concluded may be communications from another planet. Enthusiastic reporters jumped to the conclusion Tesla was hearing signals from Mars. It has been hypothesized that he may have intercepted Marconi s European experiments in July 1899 or signals from another experimenter in wireless transmission. Since 1960 the SI unit of magnetic flux density has been called the tesla. homas Alva Edison ( ) has been described as America s greatest inventor, Tdeveloping many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. He was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production and largescale teamwork to the process of invention, and is often credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory at Menlo Park. Edison held 1,093 US patents in his name, as well as many more overseas. More significant than the number of patents was the widespread impact of his inventions. Electric light and power utilities, sound recording, and motion pictures (Kinetoscope and Kinetograph) all established major new industries worldwide, contributing to mass communication and, in particular, telecommunications. A serial entrepreneur, his talents led him to found 14 companies, including General Electric. The invention of the phonograph in 1877 was unprecedented, the first device to record and reproduce sounds and antecedent of the record player, gaining him the epithet The Wizard of Menlo Park. His first phonograph recorded on tinfoil around a grooved cylinder. Despite its limited sound quality and short life-span of the recordings, the phonograph made Edison a celebrity genius amongst scientists and public alike. Despite this, he did little to develop it further until Bell, Bell, and Tainter produced a similar device using wax-coated cardboard cylinders. Not only did Edison give us the record player, he also made substantial improvements to microphone technology and his Bell Telephone microphone was used from 1890 until the 1980s. G uglielmo Marconi ( ) was an inventor and electrical engineer known for his pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission and for his development of Marconi s law and a radio telegraph system. Often credited as the inventor of radio, he shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy. An entrepreneur, businessman, and founder of The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company (later the Marconi Company), he succeeded in making a commercial success of radio by innovating and building on the work of previous experimenters and physicists. In the early 1890s he began working on the idea of wireless telegraphy. Not a new idea, numerous investigators and inventors had been exploring wireless telegraph technologies for over 50 years, but none had proven technically and commercially successful. Despite a great deal of interest in the physics community, the interest was in radio as a scientific phenomenon, not in its potential as a communication method. Physicists generally looked on radio waves as an invisible form of light, a short range phenomenon which could only travel along a line of sight path, and thus limited to the visual horizon like existing forms of visual signaling, making it unsuitable for long distance communication. Like Bose, Marconi became aware of Hertz s work after the German s death and renewed his interest in developing a wireless telegraphy system based on radio waves. He eventually developed devices such as portable transmitters and receiver systems that could work over long distances turning what was essentially a laboratory experiment into a useful communication system. Initially limited to about ½ mile the breakthrough came in 1896 when he found that much greater range could be achieved by raising the height of his antenna and, borrowing from a technique used in wired telegraphy, grounding his transmitter and receiver. He concluded that it would be possible to span greater distances and prove valuable both commercially and militarily. This experimental apparatus proved to be the first engineering-complete, commercially successful radio transmission system. Arousing no interest in Italy, he travelled to London in early 1896 to seek support for his work. Finding various apparatus in his luggage, a Dover customs officer alerted the Admiralty and, by chance, he gained interest and support from the GPO. Demonstrations of his system over several months gradually stretched the range. By November 1899 the liner SS St Paul was able to report her imminent return to port by wireless 66 nautical miles from the English coast. At the turn of the 20th century, Marconi endeavoured to signal completely across the Atlantic to compete with telegraph cables, but it took until 1907 to establish consistent signalling. Perversely, it was the role played in maritime rescues, particularly the Titanic and Lusitania disasters, that raised public awareness of the value of radio and brought him fame and plaudits. From 1922, regular broadcasts from Marconi, Great Baddow, formed the prelude to the BBC. 9

Cider Bar Leicester s real ale selling pubs continue to supply thirsty drinkers with a wide range of ciders, ranging from the traditional style scrumpy made from 100% pressed juice from UK grown apples; to the easy drinking, fashionable offerings flavoured with anything from nettles to cranberry juice. Some sweet, some sharp, some dry and some oaked and full of tannin, all made with love and care, and using all sorts of apple varieties, from Bramley to Kingston Black is a great year to drink cider in Leicester. Our Cider and Perry List This year the cider bar is stocked with a selection of the more traditional or Heritage style ciders, sourced from the West Country, Herefordshire and the East Midlands. Some of the ciders on sale here are available in local pubs, most are not, but could be if there is the demand for them. There is also perry, made from pears, lighter than cider, but also ranges from sweet to dry, from sharp to soft. As with cider, with alcohol levels of 6% or above, it should be drunk with respect. 14 What is Bitter, Mild, Stout, Porter etc? A DEFINITION OF REAL ALE Real ale is beer brewed from traditional ingredients, matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed and served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide. Real ale is also known as cask-conditioned beer, real cask ale, real beer and naturally conditioned beer. The term real ale and the above definition were coined by CAMRA. Beer can be produced by either ale or lager style fermentation. Ale style beers can be broken down further into various styles. KEY TO BEER STYLES Mild. Low in hop character these beers may be dark or light. Generally of a lower strength (less than 4% abv) but may be strong (e.g Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild at 6% abv). Bitter. The most common beer style. Usually brown, tawny, copper or amber coloured with medium to strong bitterness, light to medium malt character may be present. Less than 4% abv in strength. Best Bitter. More robust than ordinary bitters. Brown, tawny, copper or amber coloured with medium to strong bitterness and a more evident maltiness. 4% - 4.6% abv in strength. Golden Ales. A recent innovation. These are pale amber, gold, yellow or straw coloured beers with light to strong bitterness and a strong hop character which create a refreshing taste. Strength less than 5.3% abv. Porter. Complex in flavour and typically black or dark brown. The darkness comes from the use of dark malts. Full mouthfeel and a pronounced finish through bitter hopping % abv in strength. Stout. Typically black in colour. Initial malt and caramel flavour with a distinctive dry roast bitterness in the finish. The dry roast character is achieved by the use of roasted barley. 4-8% abv in strength. Speciality. Beer that doesn t fall into the mainstream UK styles but may include novel ingredients such as non hop flowers, grain or cereal instead of malted barley, fruits, honey and spices. The category also includes cask-conditioned lagers. Strong. Strong bitters are full-bodied and possess assertive hop qualities. They are typically brown, tawny, copper, or amber but can be paler. They have medium to strong bitterness. Residual maltiness may be more pronounced than in other bitters and fruitiness may be medium to strong. Festival Special. One-off special brew could be any of the styles. Barley Wines. Range in colour from copper to tawny and dark brown. They may have a high sweetness due to residual sugars although some barley wines are fermented right out to give a dry finish. They have an almost vinous appearance in the glass and may have a strength of between % abv. The estery and fruity characteristics are counter balanced by medium to assertive bitterness. 14
