6 find your S y Stouts are a style of ale and have many sub-styles that include sweet or milk, imperial or double, Irish, oatmeal, and adjunct. A few standard characteristics are they will be dark in color and typically have a roasted, almost coffee-like flavor and aroma. y Wheat beers can be lagers or ales and come in a large range of colors, alcohol content, aromas, and flavors. With Hefewiezen and Witbier being the most recognized, some other styles include Weissbier, American, and Weizenbock. P y Porters are a style of ale and have many sub-styles that can include English, American, and Baltic. These beers share the characteristics of being a darker brown color and having a roasted quality similar to chocolate and caramel. P D y These ales are wide ranging in appearance and flavor, but what unites them in this category is that they are all hop forward. The malt backbone, which provides sweetness, is often used to balance the bitterness hops provide. Recent brewer recipes have been moving away from hop bitterness and focusing on hop aroma and flavor. P B P y These are pale in color, crisp and designed to be easy drinking and thirst quenching. The low to moderate alcohol by volume make it easy to have several in a row. M y Similar enough in style that these beers are often entered in each other s categories in beer competitions, the lager crispness and malt breadiness provide plenty of flavor and a dry finish. Some classic American examples include Yuengling Traditional, Devils Backbone Vienna, and Sam Adams Boston. Traditionally malt forward beers you will find caramel and often a nuttiness among the flavors. C y Fermented from apples, the flavors can vary greatly. Occasionally flowers and hops are used. y Also called Dark Belgian Strong Ale, the Quad is the biggest of the Abbey ales. Dark candy sugars are often added to bring complexity and to boost the alcohol percentage. Dark fruits are the norm here. y Kolsch uses ale yeast but brews and rests at colder lager temperatures. This lends the beer more fruity flavors than a typical pale lager, but still retains the smoothness. y This beer style has almost been forgotten except in Franconia, Belgium. It ranges in color from pale to light amber and is fermented in oak barrels. Traditionally has low carbonation. Different yeast strains can be used for different brewers recipes. S y One of two farmhouse ales, you will find herbs and black pepper spice due to the Saison yeast strain which allows the beer to be brewed at higher than normal temperatures. S y These styles hail from Scotland originally. Dark malt forward, you will find some caramel and biscuity flavors and occasionally fruits. Wee Heavy being a fuller version of Scottish ales. S y Sour ales use different yeast than your typical beers. And occasionally even bacterias you wouldn t find in other beers. These provide different levels of acidity and tartness. The flavors from souring can span from fruitiness, vegetal, and even barnyardy. Often actual fruits are added. B y Rauch translates to smoke and these beers are exactly that. The base of the beer can be any style, but the brewers have added smoked malts that come through in a big way. Perfect for BBQ.
