3 Dark Beers -What are they? Many types and interpretations! Easy ones They re dark! Stouts! Porters! Browns! CDA s / Black IPAs?! Not so easy! Copper colors?! Vienna Lagers?! Color variations in a style?! For this presentation lets focus on Dark Colors! BJCP 2015 Guidelines! SRM range

4 Dark Beers -measured!color -Determined how?! Lovibond! 1883 James Lovibond developed 52 System slides that were combined to match colors. Ended in 1950 when LR Bishop came out with a new system.! Still describes our malts, but not our beers! European Brewing Convention (EBC) Standard! Replaced Lovibond in 1951! Modified after 25 years! EBC units = 1.97 L! Standard Reference Method (SRM)! Spectrophotometric method! Less info on yellows & reds as compared to beer color intensity

Cicerone Quiz: Stouts don t have black patent malt The simple answer is that there really is no difference between the two, said Luke Purcell of Great Lakes Brewing My approach to a stout would be to use a larger percentage of roasted barley, Wayne Wambles of the celebrated Cigar City Brewing! If asked, Is this a porter or a stout? The answer is Yes

16 American Porter! BJCP 20A! A substantial, malty dark beer with a complex and flavorful dark malt character well that s helpful! ~More bitter/dry than english porters and less strong and assertive than stouts! IBUs: 25-50! SRM 22-40! ABV %! Commercial Example: Deschutes Black Butte Porter

17 Baltic Porter! Malt of an English Porter and restrained roast of a schwarzbier! Very complex, with multi-layered malt and dark fruit flavors! Lacks roasty qualities of stouts in general! IBUs: 20-40! SRM 17-30! ABV %! Commercial Example: Zywiec

18 Schwarzbier! BJCP 8B! Lager that balances roasted and smooth malt flavors quite drinkable! Personal favorite as it s not too malty nor heavy! IBUs: 20-30! SRM 17-30! ABV %! Commercial Example: Kostritzer Schwarzbier

19 Belgian Dark Strong Ale! BJCP 26D! Verbatim, A dark, complex, very strong Belgian ale with a delicious blend of malt richness, dark fruit flavors, and spicy elements. Complex, rich, smooth and dangerous.! Not hoppy nor bitter as a trippel! IBUs: 20-35! SRM: 12-22! ABV %! Commercial Example: Chimay Grande Reserve
