1 UCDA Report 2017/18 Issue 10 MONTHLY REPORT-JULY 2018 Key Highlights A total of 393, kilo bags of coffee valued at US$ million were exported in July 2018 at an average weighted price of US $1.77/kilo, 2 cents higher than US$ 1.75 kilo last month. Farm-gate prices for Robusta Kiboko averaged Shs /= per kilo; FAQ Shs 5,000/= per kilo, Arabica parchment Shs 5,700/= per kilo and Drugar Sh. 5,400/kilo. Coffee exports for 12 months ( August 2017 to July 2018) totalled to 4.42 million bags worth $483 million comprising Robusta 3.34 million bags worth $346 million and Arabica 1.08 million bags worth $138 million % of the total volume was exported by 10 exporters, out of 34 who performed during the month compared to 78.37% in June 2018 The ICO Composite Indicator price decreased from US Cents per lb. in June 2018 to US cents per lb. in July Coffee exports Coffee exports in July 2018 amounted to 393, kilo bags worth US $ million as shown in Fig 1. This comprises 331,342 bags ($ million) of Robusta and 61,680 bags ($7.72 million) of Arabica (see Annex1). This was a decrease of 8.01% and 17.49% in quantity and value respectively from the same month last year. Arabica registered a percentage increase in both quantity and value (7.97% and 2.27% respectively). Coffee exports in 10 months (Oct-July) were 4.8% and 13.4% lower than the previous year (Table 1). Some of the factors that led to this were: Low global prices on account of higher crop in Brazil which affected export prices as well as lower production from the main harvest in Masaka and South-Western regions compared to the previous year, new trees coming into production notwithstanding. By comparing quantity of coffee exported by type in the same Cumulatively, coffee exports for 12 months (August 2017-July month of last year (July 2016/17 and 2017/18), Robusta 2018) totalled to 4.42 million bags worth US$ 483 compared to registered a percentage decrease in both Quantity and Value million bags worth $ 512 million in the previous year (August (10.47% and 21.06% respectively) July 2017). This was an increase of 1.77% and a decrease of 5.66% in quantity and value respectively. Exports by Type and Grade Table 2 shows coffee exports by type, grade and average realized price for each grade during the month of July The weighted average export price was US$ 1.73 per kilo, 1 cent down from US$ 1.74 per kilo the previous month. Robusta exports accounted for 84.31% of total exports compared to 79.55% last month. The weighted average Robusta price was US$ 1.66 per kilo, the same as the previous month. Organic Robusta had the highest price of US$ 2.17 per kilo, fetching a premium of 34 cents over conventional Screen 18 sold at an average of US$ 1.83 per kilo which followed. Arabica fetched a weighted average price of US$ 2.09 per kilo, US Cent 1 higher than US $ 2.08 in June The highest prices were Mt. Elgon A, Bugisu B and Bugisu PB sold at US $ 3.80 per kilo each, a premium of 32 cents over conventional Bugisu AA (note however the quantities are small which might have been sold as a sample). They were followed by Organic Okoro sold at a unit price of US$ 2.66, a premium of US cents 45 above Wugar. Organic Drugar fetched US$ 2.71 per kilo, a premium of 72 cents over conventional Drugar which contributed 63.06% of Arabica exports. Drugar had a discount of 49 cents compared to Bugisu AA. It was followed by Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd 11.24% (8.48%); Ideal Quality Commodities Ltd 10.41% (12.54%); Ibero (U) Ltd 7.61% (8.76%); Olam (U) Ltd-6.51% (8.76%); Kawacom (U) Ltd- 6.42% (5.63%) to mention but a few. The first 10 exporters held a market share of 76.74% slightly higher than 76.36% in June Out of the 34 exporters who performed, 17 exported Robusta Coffee only while 4 exported Arabica coffee only. Local Situation During the month of July, farm gate prices ranged from Sh.2,000-2,400 per kilo of Kiboko (Robusta dry cherries); Shs. 4,700-5,300/= for FAQ; Sh. 5,400-6,000/= for Arabica parchment; and Sh. 5,200-5,600/= per kilo for Drugar from Kasese. The averages were: Sh. 2,200 per kilo for Kiboko coffee; Sh. 5,000 for Robusta FAQ; Sh. 5,700 for Arabica parchment and Sh. 5,400/= for Drugar. 6. Coffee Exports By Destination 5. Global Situation Global coffee exports for June 2018 were million bags, which were 2.6% higher than in June Total exports for the nine months of coffee year 2017/18 were million bags, which was an increase of 0.3%. The 2017/18 global production is still estimated at million bags compared to million bags, a decrease of 0.3% from last year. Arabica production is estimated to reduce by 6.6% to million bags while Robusta is projected to increase by 11.5 % to million bags. Africa s production is expected to increase by 5.3% from last year with an output of million bags. Global consumption is projected to increase by 1.5% at million bags with major increases noted in Asia and Oceania countries and South America. The ICO Composite Indicator price decreased from US Cents per lb. in June 2018 to US cents per lb. in July It ranged from US cents to per lb during the month. The destinations of Uganda s coffee exports during the month of July 2018 are shown in Fig 3 (details in Annex 3). Exports to EU countries amounted to 253,142 bags higher than 201,931 bags exported in the previous month. This represented a 64.41% of total exports. EU was followed by Sudan with 65,037 bags (16.55%) compared to 43,640 bags (13.62%) the previous month. India imported 18,960 (4.82%) compared to 21,106 (6.59%), USA 16,760 bags (4.26%) compared to 15,369 (4.8%) and Morocco 11,535 (2.93%) compared to 12,968 (4.05%). Coffee exports to Africa amounted to 80,804 bags, a market share of 20.56% compared to 60,100 (18.76%) bags the previous month. 4 7. External Buyers of Uganda Coffee Annex 4 shows a list of Ugandan coffee buyers in July The top 10 buyers held a market share of % of total exports higher than 62.23% the previous month. Sucafina S.A led with a market share of 14.03% compared to 8.94% in June It was followed by Altasheel-10.64% (9.83%); Bernhard Rothfos 7.61% (9.84%); Olam International-6.84% (12.33%); Volcafe 6.49% (7.25%) Ecom Agro Industrial-4.94% (3.47 %) Luigi Lavazza-4.52% (0.85%), Kininklijke 3.39% (2.47%), Strauss Commodities-2.77% (1.55%) and Cofftea 2.67% Note: The figures in brackets represent percentage performance in the previous month -June Coffee Development and Promotional Activities A total 240,425,353 Coffee seedlings were available for planting in the five coffee growing regions in first planting season of 2018 (March to May). Of these, 189,201,302 were allocated and 163,085,239 seedlings have so far been planted. Comparing with the last coffee second planting season (September- November 2017), a total of 131,019,698 coffee seedlings were planted in 102 coffee growing districts out of the 157,063,064 coffee seedlings that were available in the 2,089 nurseries. 9. Outlook for August 2018 Coffee exports are projected to be 380,000 bags as the main season in Masaka and South Western regions begins to tail off.
