1 Fresh Deciduous Fruit (Apples, Grapes, & Pears): World Markets and Trade June 21 APPLES Record Production but Trade Estimate Revised Downward The world production estimate for 29/1 is virtually unchanged from the December forecast at 61.9 million tons. The world export estimate is reduced 8 percent to 4.8 million tons due to weaker than anticipated international demand, primarily in Russia. 29/1 Revision Highlights Chile s production and export estimates are both revised down 2 percent to 1.1 million tons and 55, tons, respectively, because inclement weather impacted quality and supplies and an earthquake caused internal transportation delays. U.S. exports are estimated down 3 percent to 82, tons due to weaker than anticipated demand from Canada and Mexico, the top two U.S. markets. U.S. imports are trimmed 1 percent to 15, tons on abundant domestic supplies. China s export estimate is reduced 1 percent to 1.2 million tons on less demand in its major markets, including Russia, the Philippines, and Kazakhstan. Russia s import estimate is lowered 8 percent to 1.1 million tons as a result of continued economic problems, weakening currency, and more restrictive phytosanitary requirements on fruit from the European Union (EU), its largest supplier. GRAPES Record Production but Lower Trade The global production estimate remains virtually unchanged at a record 15.1 million tons. The world trade estimate is lowered 8 percent to 2.2 million tons on lighter demand for imported grapes, competition with alternative fruits, and smaller exportable supplies from Chile, the world s dominant exporter. 29/1 Revision Highlights Chile s production and export estimates are reduced 15 percent and 23 percent to 1 million tons and 665, tons, respectively, due to weather-related problems and an earthquake. Approved by the World Agricultural Outlook Board/USDA
2 Page 2 The U.S. import estimate is lowered 2 percent to 515, tons, largely resulting from smaller shipments from Chile, the largest U.S. supplier, and competition from other domestically produced fruits. The U.S. export estimate is revised down 5 percent to 35, tons on lower exportable supplies and reduced demand in major markets, including Canada and Mexico. U.S. shipments to Mexico are down sharply, due in part to the 45-percent retaliatory tariffs related to the trucking dispute. PEARS Production Down Marginally but Still a Record; Trade Stable The world production estimate is down 1 percent to 19.7 million tons, but still a record. The world trade estimate remains virtually unchanged at 1.6 million tons. Weaker than anticipated import demand in the United States and the EU offsets stronger demand in Vietnam and Russia. 29/1 Revision Highlights The production estimates for Argentina and South Africa are lowered 6 percent each on weather-induced problems. The U.S. import estimate is lowered 2 percent on abundant domestic supplies. The EU import estimate is down 1 percent on plentiful domestic supplies. were raised 1 percent on stronger than anticipated demand in Russia; Russian imports are raised 6 percent on higher demand from EU. The Vietnam import estimate is up 15 percent on stronger than expected import pace. For more information, please contact Shari Kosco at or shari.kosco@usda.gov.
