2 FEATURE Travel Smarter Looking to plan your journey, but not sure where to start? Look no further as convenience is just a click away! Introducing the Travel Smarter microsite, a onestop cyber-center designed to give road users fingertip access to everything highway related, from travel tips, to a near accurate calculation on the cost and distance travelled for each journey. This microsite, which is part of the Travel Smarter campaign, is a brainchild of Persatuan Syarikat- Syarikat Konsesi Lebuhraya Malaysia (PSKLM) under the guidance of Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM), and is aimed at introducing and educating the public of the 30 major highways in the country and everything related to road travel. The microsite, accessible via contains many important features, such as the Journey Planner, which is a GPS-based map that helps road users calculate the length and cost of their travels in an accurate manner. This feature allows road users to plan their destination with two options available: travelling on toll and non-tolled roads. Also available will be live feed of traffic conditions through closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) at certain highways throughout the country as well as through 2 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE OGOS-SEPTEMBER 2014 Twitter updates from certain highway concessionaires. For example, a vehicle travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Pilah will only need to access the website and insert their departure and destination location to find out the duration and fuel cost of the journey. A check on the live feed of the CCTV would also help drivers to see if the route they are planning to take would be congested or not. Drivers could also plan where to stop during their journey by checking out the facilities available at one of the many Rest and Service areas at the inter-urban highways shown in the microsite. Important announcements by respective concessionaires such as Travel Time Advisory are also available here, especially during festive seasons so that road users can plan their journey in the most effective and cost saving manner possible. There are also 15 write-ups that cover everything highway related, from the issue of safety to the transformation of road systems in Malaysia, as well as how the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system has benefited road users by significantly easing congestion. This website also debunks the misconception that highway concessionaires are making exorbitant profits off toll collection, as it details the income of toll collections and why road commuters are paying for the optimum travel experience. The Travel Smarter website also contains information on the facilities offered on all major highways as well Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) as well as how the emergence of highways have spurred the country s economy through tourism and new townships. Namun, kejayaan yang dikecapi tidak bermakna sekiranya kita tidak mampu mengekalkan keamanan yang diperolehi secara percuma ini ibarat Yang Dikejar Tak Dapat, Yang Dikendong Berciciran. Selama 57 tahun kita mencapai kemerdekaan, terbukti bahawa perpaduan di antara rakyat bebilang kaum di negara ini merupakan asas yang perlu ada dalam menjamin keamanan negara. Jawatan dan pangkat tidak perlu dijadikan kepentingan yang mampu mengugat kestabilan negara. Kita sebagai rakyat juga harus memainkan peranan untuk bersatu membentuk perpaduan dan tidak berpecah belah walaupun ancaman badai datang melanda kerana kita cintakan Malaysia lebih dari segala-segalanya. 4 TRAVEL PADA TANAH MERDEKA INI (Wan Muhammad Shukri Wan Abd Rahman) Kami kenal tanah ini selutnya pernah berbaur hanyar darah yang tumpah daripada liang derita para pejuang lumpurnya pernah tersimbah daripada batang tumbuh para pahlawan relung tanah ini pernah bergegar dek jerit pekik pejuang kemerdekaan yang mencari benih kebebasan dadanya pernah mengambus kujuran kaku anak nusa yang bangkit membina benteng bersama keris dan tombahk bersahaja menyambung nyawa demi tanah ini tidak diragut ganas. Pada tanah merdeka ini telah tumbuh rimba kemajuan dan manusia kian lupa asal diri lalu api nasionalisme yang lantang bertiup sejak berdekad lalu kini terpaksa menunggu sepi mentari Ogos untuk bernyala kembali yang membelah relung tanah ini dahulu kini kian lenyap ditawan arus duniawi erti kemerdekaan kian kabur dalam mata fikir anak-anak kini. Namun kami tetap bersyukur kerana dengan korban suci NEGERI INI, ANAK (Marsli N.O) Negeri ini, anak adalah tanah hijau penuh mahsul terlalu pemurah dan saksama pada tiap warga yang berjasa yang rela memberikan keringat serta setia untuk bumi tercintanya. Usah kau persoalkan tentang derita milik siapa di negeri kaya dan kesuraman sekejap siapa pula menjadi dalang kalau tiba-tiba terdengar laungan dari bukit penuh gelap itu hanyalah lolongan sang pertapa yang lemas ditikam bayang! Negeri ini, adalah tanah luas sesayup pandangan yang telah melahirkan ribuan pahlawan. Rela memilih terbuang dari berputih mata, kerana baginya, mati itu cuma sekali dan tidak harus sia-sia. Mereka tidak rela ini negeri tercinta jadi kuda tunggangan atau dipekosa warga tidak bernama. Meski darah dan tulang jadi gantian. Kerana baginya: negeri adalah tanah adalah air, adalah api, adalah angin. Adalah maruah, adalah permai, adalah berani, adalah susila. Adalah segala-galanya. Dan hari ini, kata keramat itu dilaungkan. Tanpa mengira kulit atau warna, tampuk atau asal, percaya atau agama: MERDEKA! MERDEKA! MERDEKA! Di negeri ini anak, mari kita hidup tanpa curiga atau rasa berbeza. PLUS also urges cash paying users to migrate to the electronic toll collection system consisting of PLUSMiles and Touch n Go cards or SmartTAG for smoother passage at toll plazas. Currently, the public can purchase PLUSMiles cards at a promotion rate of RM5 at the dedicated Reload Lanes at both toll plazas. PLUSMiles and Touch n Go cards are also available at Customer Service Centres at both plazas. PLUS Tawar Rebat Tol Untuk Pelanggan Elektronik Di Plaza Tol Batu Tiga Dan Sungai Rasau Bermula 1 September, orang ramai yang melalui Plaza Tol Batu Tiga dan Sungai Rasau berpeluang menikmati rebat tol sehingga 30 peratus. 11 PLUS FOCUS PLUS FOCUS PLUS Smartphone Application PLUS Expressway App, a smart application which has been introduced by PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) that enables the highway operator to disseminate the latest highway traffic information faster, easier and accurately to motorists with smartphones and tablets. Smartphone users can now download the free PLUS Expressways app from the App Store for iphone/ipad users or from Google Play Store for Android users. Through the application, highway users will be able to check the latest traffic updates such as live feeds, accidents, traffic congestion, road maintenance works and other information on their mobile gadgets. It also offers highway users a toll fare calculator, current traffic images at selected highway stretches and rest areas, facilities, locations of service stations, ATMs and interactive highway maps. Besides that, users will not only be informed with latest events from PLUS Malaysia but also the PLUSTrafik updates on traffic conditions & incidents along PLUS highways. Furthermore, the app also enables PLUSMiles cardholders to register their cards through the PLUSMiles portal and check for toll rebates and reward points. 12 PLUS FOCUS PLUS FOCUS NO SMOKING ZONE AT REST AREAS: PLUS TO GIVE FULL COOPERATION PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) will give its fullest cooperation with the Ministry of Health on the implementation of no smoking zones at all rest and service areas on all highways operated by the company. According to the PLUS Chief Operating Officer, Mohammad Fuad Khusairi, PLUS will cooperate with the Ministry of Works in implementing no smoking zones at all rest and services areas. Fuad also said that PLUS had previously implemented no smoking zone at food court areas at selected rest areas for the comfort of highway users. We had previously set-up dedicated smoking corners at selected rest areas, Fuad added. PLUS will also hold further discussions with the Ministry of Health to expand no smoking zones to other sections within the vicinity of the rest areas. 17 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE OGOS-SEPTEMBER 2014

13 SAFETY TIPS Driving In The RAIN Turn on your headlights. This will make it easier for you to see what is in front of you; thus, preventing any accidents. Keep a minimum of a good five car length from the car in front of you. Drive at or below the speed limit to the extent that you are comfortable with, and can see far enough in front of you to appropriately make driving decisions. Be aware of hydroplaning. This is where your vehicle travels on top of the water and has NO or very little contact with the ground. Your traction is reduced significantly. To safely get out of a hydroplaning situation let off the gas and steer straight or slightly in the direction you must go. Do not make sudden motions and remain calm. Avoid flooded roads. Never drive through standing or flowing water in a road way unless you have no choice or you are able to follow someone else to judge the depth of the water. Flooding the engine of your car can cause the engine to stall, and deep water can actually float your car and take it off the roadway. Be aware that brakes can be affected by water. 14 SAFETY TIPS Preparation for a LONG JOURNEY (FAMILY) Travel at night or first thing in the morning so children might sleep, the roads will be emptier too. Stop frequently so the kids can stretch and run around, burn of some of that energy. If you plan to stop, make sure it s at service stations, they will have baby changing facilities. Smaller kids car seats should be positioned so they are able to see out of the windows. If anyone suffers from motion sickness, encourage them to focus on a point in the distance, outside the car and avoid greasy food beforehand. Ensure that your child seats are securely fastened Don t forget the entertainment; carry DVDs, plenty of music, headsets, a few card games, puzzle games and handheld game stations for your kids. Preparation for a LONG JOURNEY (ALONE) Dress comfortably. Charge electronics the day before, and pack a charger for the car. Help your parents clean out the car. Even though you may not want to, at least clean the area where you will be sitting. Get some rest. You don t want to be overly tired during the ride. 6 hours of sleep should be plenty. Bring your favorite music discs to avoid from being sleepy while driving. But don t play it too loud as it may annoy other drivers. Avoid salty foods. Salty food will make you thirsty. And being thirsty means having to drink more water, which means going to the bathroom more often. Make sure to stop at rest stops. Sitting in the car for 5 hours straight isn t healthy. Stretch, get a bite to eat, or go to the restroom! Bring some snacks, along with bottled water. Staying hydrated is important. However, don t drink too much! Pack two bags. A backpack or suitcase for your clothes (to put in the trunk) and a small shoulder bag for on-the-road entertainment (to keep with you) this way you won t have to root through clothes to find something to do. Pack the right foods! It is true that salty snacks are not the best, but sweets are a good alternative. Try candy, and make sure to select some that last a long while so you don t eat as much or chewing a gum! 15 SMART TIPS Listen to a podcast Before you leave the house, make sure that you have podcast and/or other audio educational or learning materials that you can utilize while in the traffic. itunes, for instance, offers a lot of free podcasts from universities, professionals, educators, experienced individuals and entertainers. If your mobile phone has Internet access, you can even stream the episodic series of your favorite speaker and download it to your library. Use the time to get as much information to further your knowledge at some things. This can range from learning a new language, learning how to have a more positive mindset, how to sell efficiently, etc. How to deal with a TRAFFIC JAM Look for alternative routes Listen to the radio news intently. Search for channels announcing traffic information on the routes to your destination. If you have a GPS in your car, set the recommended routes on the device at once for you to follow suit. Also, you can refer to the taxi drivers beside you or other drivers for suggestions. Better yet, if you have a mobile app on your smart phone which can detect the paths with the heaviest traffic at that specific time, avoid them and follow through with alternatives. Sing along to songs over the radio Not every car has an MP3 player, Bluetooth technology capable of connecting your music player to your car s audio system and other high-technology devices, but almost every car has an in-built radio. Why not take the opportunity to sing when you re all alone? Singing will somehow ease your anger and tension. Take on high notes and see how high your vocal cords can reach. Simply, have fun. Eat In your car, you must always have something to chow and chew on. Eating generally makes us happier. With more energy, we can think clearer and act with more vigor. If you don t have anything from your fridge, buy food from the nearby drive-thru and eat the food while trapped in the traffic jam. All good things happen to those who wait patiently. So don t let your frustration lead to anger and be patient instead. Do things that are useful to kill boredom and spend your time wisely while waiting for the red light to turn green. Reflect on things in life Maybe you re so busy every day that you miss to have reflections on what you do, your relationships with your family, friends, colleagues at work, and the community. By thinking about the wrong and the right things you have accomplished, you are improving your personality and outlook to become a better individual. In addition, you can meditate, set priority tasks and be compelled to plan for the near future with a lighter mood and apt preparation.
