2 Guyan, your club..your community. Manager s Notes Morris Blair House: Exciting News! A letter to the membership was sent on February 24, 2014 announcing our new Executive Chef. I would just like to mention this again for those of you that might not have seen the letter. We recently embarked on a nationwide search to identify a highly capable culinary professional to become the next Executive Chef of Guyan Golf & Country Club. Working hand-in-hand with our executive search firm, we unanimously agreed that we found the right fit with our next Executive Chef Scott Poff. Chef Scott will officially join us on April 14, Chef Scott s focus at Guyan Golf & Country Club will be to ensure consistency and quality in our culinary operations and blend our traditional club favorites with exploring and incorporating the latest culinary techniques and trends. Your Board feels Scott was a real Get for our club and together we will take the culinary program at Guyan Golf & Country Club to the next level. With regard to his decision to work at Guyan Golf & Country Club, Chef Scott stated My family and I are very excited about returning to West Virginia and my new role as Executive Chef of Guyan Golf and Country Club. I am looking forward to meeting the membership and cooking some great dishes including club favorites and some of my personal favorites. I believe in from scratch cooking with love and passion for the craft. I hope to see our members in the dining room in the future and Go Herd!!! We are truly grateful for the on-going support and input we receive from our membership. We are committed to continuing to make Guyan Golf & Country Club the finest club of its kind in the country and believe that bringing Scott onboard as our Executive Chef is the next step toward that goal. Please join me in welcoming Chef Scott to the Guyan Golf & Country Club family. Reservations: Remember, when making dining reservations, you will call our main number, (304) , and when prompted for reservations, you will press 1. Please leave your name, date and time of reservation, number of guests in your party, member number, and dining room preference of formal or casual dining room, patio, or Pro Shop patio. If you would like a return call to confirm the reservation, please leave a contact number and your call will be returned as soon as possible. When making reservations for Special Club Events/Functions, you will press 304 and speak with Chris. Note, Special Club Events/Functions do not apply towards your food minimum and there is a 72 hour cancellation policy! Flesher House: As a reminder, for your convenience, we have placed food order signage near #8 and #17 so you can call ahead and place your food orders at the Flesher House. This should greatly reduce wait times for food orders. Please note that at our busiest peak times, the staff will do their very best to have your order ready for you when you make the turn, but there could still be a possibility of a short wait time. Also this season, computer generated tickets will be printed for you to sign for your order instead of the chit tickets that have been used in the past. Pool &Tennis: Our Pool/Tennis Chairman this year is Ms. Barbara Moses Atkins. Barbara and I will be working closely with Shawn Anderson, Pool Operator, Alex Taylor, Pool Manager, and John and Laurie Mercer, the Directors of Tennis in preparation for this season at both the pool and tennis. The har-tru courts resurfacing will be completed in mid to late April, depending on the weather, and that should put us on track to have everything up and running by our target date of May 1 st. This year should be a great year for the tennis program and the pool and we are all very excited and ready for our openings. Remember, we are offering the Tennis Only Membership, so contact Jamie in Membership for further information. To-Go Orders : The regular menu is available for to-go orders. However, this policy does not include the ability to order food at the Clubhouse and take to the pool during pool season. If members and guests wish to have food while at the pool, they must purchase food and beverages from the pool grill. Dress Code: Please follow the dress code for all areas. Sport Coat / Suit Jacket required for men in the formal dining room- tie optional. Appropriate denim attire is allowed in the clubhouse only and is not permitted during Sunday Brunch and Special Events, such as Easter, Mother s Day, Thanksgiving. Members, please remind your guests of our dress code prior to them arriving at the Club. This will save both you and your guests possible embarrassment. There have been a few incidents where guests have arrived and do not have the appropriate attire and haven t been informed of our dress code. Welcome our newest members and please see our membership drive promotional information in the current newsletter. Remember, if you have any questions, comment, or concerns, please feel free to contact me either in person, via phone ext. 333, or morrisblair@comcast.net. 2

6 Green & Grounds Jason Hart Many of you are aware of the issues with our current water source used to irrigate the turf at Guyan. If you were not aware of these issues, the following is an update on the progress of the project. The water used to irrigate the golf course is pumped out the Guyandotte River underneath interstate 64 and into an underground 20X20 room behind #9 tee. This 20X20 room is called a wet well. From there, the water is pumped out of the 20X20 underground wet well to the lake on #2 tee. The 20X20 underground wet well houses three submersible pumps used to transfer the water to the lake. The lake on #2 is a reservoir for the irrigation system. The pumps for the actual irrigation system are in the pump house next to the lake on #2. Divers are contracted to access the issues with the pumping system. The divers are scheduled to investigate the pipe underneath Interstate 64 with video equipment. The video procedure will access the integrity of the aging pipe. The divers will install a new screen for the intake underwater in the Guyandotte River. The divers will also replace a broken valve inside the 20X20 underground wet well. Update: Divers were on property last week to inspect the underground wet well and replace the broken valve. The divers were unable to cut out the valve while underwater. Due to the existing conditions inside the 20X20 wet well, the divers will need to install a plug into the intake and plug the intake pipe at the source (River). The divers will then pump out the wet well and remove the broken valve out under dry conditions. The new valve will be installed. Video will be taken of the inside of the pipe underneath I-64. A new screen will be fitted over the intake when the plug is removed. If the pipe underneath Interstate 64 is fit for continued operation, new pumps, new motors, and new controls will be installed in the wet well behind #9. The staff will be busy early next week building a temporary gravel road behind #9 tee. Many trucks and trailers need to access the area safely. We will have a crane on property late next week as well to pull the old pumps out of the underground wet well. The divers will be back on property when the weather permits. Right now the site is covered in snow and ice. Flooding at the site is an issue this time of year as well. A reliable water source is the key to sound turf management. Over the years, this aging pumping system has become more and more expensive to operate and less dependable. Upon completion of this project, Guyan will have an updated, reliable source for irrigation water for decades to come. I will continue to update everyone on the progress.
