INTRODUCTION Born from a mutual love of wine, travel and our beautiful area, a group of dynamic entrepreneurs and fellow oenophiles got together and established the Eden Wine Route. From the mountainous area of Hessequa, the enchanting beauty of the Karoo, and the coastal area of Mossel Bay, to the forests of the Bitou district, the Eden District Municipality (recently renamed the Garden Route District Municipality) is home to more than 48 wine farms. Although not nearly as popular as its more famous wine route cousins to the west, the Garden Route District has grown exponentially in it s wine and liquor production over the last decade and there is a definite lack of focus when it comes to wine as a tourist attraction in this area. Enter the Eden Wine Route... 1
THE EDEN DISTRICT Perhaps not as well know as it s more popular counterparts to the west, the Garden Route District Municipality is home to a myriad of wine farms. From boutique family-owned estates, to bigger more well known wineries. It is also home to gin distilleries, olive estates, ostrich farms and countless other culinary destinations. The Eden Wine Route will officially consist of the Hessequa, Mossel Bay, George and Knysna municipal areas but the tours we ll be offering will include the Klein Karoo Wine Route and the Plett Wine Route, which all falls under the former Eden District, now known as the Garden Route District. From the dry Karoo with it s uniquely captivating beauty, to the coastal area of Mossel Bay and the enchanting forest areas of the Bitou district, the Eden Wine Route will take you on a journey of your senses and a culinary experience as diverse as the areas it encompasses. 2
SERVICES AND BENEFITS South Africa s wine tourism industry has been rated as one of the best in the world. Not only because of our favourable exchange rate which make it very affordable for international visitors to spend time in South Africa, but also due to the diversity and quality we offer. To date, only the Cape Winelands come to mind when thinking of wine tourism in South Africa, but like a sleeping beauty, the Garden Route District Municipality, of which the the Klein Karoo forms a part, has slowly awakened to become part of the top wine-producing areas in the world. To attract more tourism we have established an NGO that will focus national and international marketing efforts on drawing niche market tourism to this area. This will be done through various digital platforms and associations with other role players, documentaries filmed in the area, partnerships with global role players and actively marketing wines of the area in Africa and the rest of the globe and assisting smaller wine producers to get a slice of the global wine exports market. 3
MAP & AREA The Garden Route district covers an area of 23,331 square kilometres in the south-eastern part of the Western Cape. The district is divided into seven local municipalities covering the regions known as the Garden Route and the Little Karoo. It stretches to the Breede River mouth and the Langeberg mountains in the west, where it borders the Overberg District Municipality and (for a short distance) the Cape Winelands District Municipality. To the north, the boundary with the Central Karoo District Municipality runs along the Swartberg mountains. In the east, the municipality runs up to the Eastern Cape provincial boundary. GARDEN ROUTE DISTRICT (FORMERLY EDEN DISTRICT) MAP KEY 4 Eastern Tour Western Tour Northern Tour Existing wine routes (Klein Karoo and Plett) Eden Wine Route
STATS & DEMOGRAPHICS Garden Route District Cape Wine lands The Garden Route District accounts for less than 10% of annual wine tourism in South Africa. LET S PLACE OURSELVES ON THE MAP! 5
VISION - To establish the Eden district as a world-class wine and culinary travel destination for both local and international visitors. - To focus marketing efforts on all the area has to offer, with the main focus being on wines produced in the area. - To offer wineries in the area a unique marketing platform and to assist them with wine sales and exports nationally as well as internationally. 6
PROPOSED LOCATION George Airport (ACSA) - gateway to the Eden Wine Route We hope to secure premises at George Airport which will act as an information/tourism centre but also give visitors a small taste of what the Eden Wine Route has to offer. Tastings will be presented at the airport premises by a trained sommelier. Apart from all the wines of the area being displayed and on offer for on- and off consumption, other products from the area, like gin, brandy, craft beer, cheese products, etc., will also be promoted. 7
LOCAL SHOP available at Eden Wine George Airport We aim to have all items sold in the retail section, and available on the menu, to be locally sourced products from the Eden district. This concept will later be franchised and Eden Wine Route shops will be established in all major city centres across South Africa. We will also secure dedicated shelf space in selected retail outlets and restaurants in the Garden Route District showcasing Eden Wind Route products.. 8
TOURS Personalised Bespoke Upmarket Culinary Tourists don t buy holidays, they buy experiences. With culinary tours being one of the top-ranking tours, we will offer exclusive, upmarket tours to selected wine farms in the area, combining it with visits to gin distilleries, top restaurants, and a myriad of other activities - all in the Eden district. Standard, daily, tours will be done in partnership with Real People Real Experiences but we will also offer high-end, chauffeur driven, private tours in our fleet of vintage cars. Wine tourism is a subset of experiential tourism. Most people aren t wine geeks and they embed the wine in a larger context, usually in gastronomy tourism, which is growing. Wine tourism will be the salvation of the wine trade if they can get it right. ~ Felicity Carter, editor-in-chief of Meininger s Wine Business International 9
PARTICIPATING FARMS REEDVALLEY WINES ReedValley offers a unique wine tasting experience in the heart of the world-famous Garden Route. At our venue, you can sample exclusive export wines that we expertly pair with traditional Portuguese cuisine. Cosy up in front of our oversized fireplace on cold days or soak up the sun on our expansive lawn during the summer months. A kids play area will keep the little ones entertained for hours while mom and dad enjoy a glass of our world-famous ReedValley wine. HOUTBOSCH WINE AND CRAFT BEER Houtbosch is located in the heart of the Garden Route, at the foot of the majestic Outeniqua Mountains. An enthralling tasting room showcasing our visionary range of wine and craft beer. With our thirst for experience and through our love for wine and the local community, our dream became a reality. Our mission at Houtbosch Wine & Craft Beer is to create a trendsetting brand that the people of the Garden Route can be proud of and call their own. BALEIA WINES The farm, Dassieklip, was originally a grain and sheep farm and in 2002 the Droogerivier Dohnes stud was established, soon followed by the registration of the Droogerivier Brangus stud in After completing his studies in 2005, Jan-Hendrik Joubert,Jr. returned to the family farm. Soon after his arrival he recognised the farm s infinite potential for the cultivation of olives and wine grapes. Contributing factors to this conclusion was the farm s close proximity to the ocean, the limestone-rich soil and the ideal climate and it became the final motivation for the development and expansion of the farm. 10
PARTICIPATING FARMS AAN T VETTE WINE ESTATE AT DE DOORNKRAAL De Doornkraal s Aan t Vette Wine Estate established its vineyard in The vineyard consists of a single block Syrah (Shiraz) cultivar that has consistently produced award-winning wines. Our Wine Estate s vineyard stretches to the Vette River, bordering the town. A biodiversity strategy is strictly followed, by utilising environmentally friendly farming practices that enhances the suitability of the vineyard as a habitat for biodiversity. No pesticides or herbicides are allowed in the proximity of the Wine Estate. Spraying of the vineyard is done manually and only organic substances are used. BRAMON WINE ESTATE Bramon Wine Estate 2000c, is a boutique Wine Estate (250 ton Cellar) named after Peter and Caroline Thorpe s children, Bram and Manon and is the first Estate this far East of the Western Cape. Situated 20km East of Plettenberg Bay in a mountainous area called The Crags, this family run estate has broken new ground by pioneering vineyards in the Plettenberg Bay area. Pushing the boundaries of wine-making with their award winning non-traditional and traditional Methode Cap Classique bubblies and still wines and garnering many national and international awards (winning two double gold Gran d Or s in 2015 alone) Bramon has paved the way for a new wine route. BOPLAAS CELLAR AND BISTRO Located at the very eastern edge of the Cape winelands and along the picturesque Route 62, lies the quaint Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp, where the almost 60 hectares of vineyards tended by the Nels of Boplaas are to be found. Apart from cultivating the well-known classic French varieties, Boplaas continues the tradition of tending Muscat vines and is very much focused on the Portuguese varieties Touriga Naçional, Tinta Barocca, Souzão and Verdelho. The climatic conditions of Caltizdorp are ideal for these hardy Portuguese vines and allow for the crafting of truly unique table wines. 11 and many more...
