1 Neighbors of Pinehurst A note from the president July 2018 Here we are half way through 2018 which means we are half way through our Neighbors of Pinehurst calendar. Looking back on the first half of our NOP year, our ongoing Book Clubs, Bridge Groups, Wine Groups, Recipe Groups and Game Groups have each been coming together in members homes and enjoying the camaraderie and fun of their specific gatherings. Among the membership, a cross-section enjoyed the Ladies Bridge Luncheon in January, the two Dining Out events in February and May, the Spring Progressive Dinner in April, as well as the Pool Party at the Pinewild Country Club pool in June. Each of these events brought our members together for fun, food and the advancement of friendships. It s been a good six months! Now it s time to look ahead to the next six months and plan our calendars for the rest of Our next scheduled group opportunity was a major success last year and promises to be equally popular again this year. August 17 th is our Wine Tasting Event at the Pinewild Country Club with four courses of small plate pairings coupled with featured wines of Robert Strong Vineyards from the Sonoma region of California. Details related to this event follow in this newsletter and I encourage members to sign up early because of limited seating, so get your check in early! In the months ahead watch for two more Dining Out opportunities, one in August and one in November. These dinners which are held in area restaurants are always enjoyed by the members who attend, so try to join us for one or both. On September 16 th, the Neighbors of Pinehurst Board will host a Member Appreciation Picnic at the Pinewild Clubhouse to show our appreciation to all the members who collectively support the many activities and events within the NOP organization. Then in October two events are scheduled, the Fall Progressive Dinner on October 13th and the annual Book Club Luncheon on October 25 th at CCNC. From my perspective, Neighbors of Pinehurst offers its members the opportunity to choose as many or as few activities and events as their lifestyles desire. Then once the choices are made, individual participation allows for the development of new relationships and offers new opportunities which embrace the diversity of our lives, our talents and our communities. As you look ahead to the next six months, be sure to join us for some of the many NOP happenings that are on the horizon! Happy Fourth of July! Karen Herring Important notice: The next board meeting will be held at 4:00 p.m. August 1 st at the Herring residence, 30 Kilbride. RSVP to Karen Herring, halherring@yahoo.com or call

Send your check/s for $10/lady made payable to Neighbors of Pinehurst to Phyllis Clark, 64 Stoneykirk Drive, Pinehurst, NC Bridge documents are sent out in PDF format and can be read and printed from Adobe Reader, just like the newsletter. Everyone has busy schedules, so set up your game at least a month in advance. Thank you. Need a Partner? Give Phyllis a call at She coordinates players who are looking for a game. Have you considered playing in another marathon with a different partner? Maybe a new member? Another friend? Or someone who s looking for a partner? And the Winners Are: Grandslammer LVII, a rubber bridge marathon, finished in June. Congratulations to the following: 1st Sally Bold-Frick & Kathleen Richardson 19,450 $80 2nd Rosemary Fekkes & Valerie Slade 18,530 $48 3rd Chris Novak & Kathy Samchalk 17,490 $32 Couples Marathon Signups will continue until there are eight couples and another marathon will begin. Sign up and join in the fun! It s a very nice way to spend an evening. Here s wishing you great cards! Games are scheduled so that you play with a different couple once a month for seven (7) months. If you enjoy bridge, this is a great way to meet new couples as well as spend an evening with friends. To sign up, send a check for $15 / couple, made payable to Neighbors of Pinehurst, to Lynne Moore, 32 Lasswade Drive, Pinehurst, NC, Checks may be mailed or dropped in the basket on Lynne s porch. If there are any questions, call Lynne at or her at lbmoore@aol.com. How Marathon Bridge Works Each Marathon consists of seven months of scheduled play with one additional month allowed for the completion of all rounds. There are no games scheduled in December. Couples or lady partners may schedule play at their convenience during the eight-month period. Signups are on a first-come-first-served basis. When a group fills up, new signups are placed on a waiting list until there are eight teams to form a new group. This procedure continues throughout the year. So, if you are finishing one marathon and wish to continue or sign up for an additional one send in your check (s). For more information contact either Lynne or Phyllis.
