2 News & Informative articles De Krans skitter by 2015 Michelangelo wyn- en spiritus toekennings DE KRANS SKITTER BY 2015 MICHELANGELO WYN- EN SPIRITUS TOEKENNINGS De Krans Wynkelder in Calitzdorp, reeds sinoniem met puik gehalte port, vaar nou ook uitstekend met sy reeks natuurlike wyne. Die eerste oesjaar van De Krans se Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) het pas die IQ Business Trofee verower vir die Mees Innoverende Wyn by die 2015 Michelangelo Wyn Toekennings, waarvan die funksie op 18 September in Somerset Wes gehou is. Hierdie was egter nie die enigste prestasie nie. De Krans se Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2012 het ook n Dubbelgoue medalje verower en beide De Krans se Touriga Nacional 2014 en Tinta Roriz 2013 het Goue medaljes ontvang by hierdie kompetisie. Die Michelangelo Wyntoekennings is reeds in sy 19de jaar en is die enigste wynkompetisie in Suid-Afrika met n eksklusiewe internasionale paneel van beoordelaars wat bestaan uit wynmakers, wynmeesters, joernaliste en sommeliers. n Totaal van 1665 inskrywings is vanjaar ingeskryf deur 364 produsente in 48 verskillende klasse. Alhoewel De Krans se MCC in die tradisionele bottelgegiste manier berei word, is hierdie ook die eerste Méthode Cap Classique in Suid-Afrika wat berei is van Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc en Tinta Barocca! Laasgenoemde is natuurlik n Portugese druifsoort, wat ook in De Krans se bekende portwyne gebruik word oor vele dekades. Hierdie bottelgegiste vonkelwyn word berei in beperkte hoeveelhede deur De Krans. Wynmaker Louis van der Riet beskryf die wyn as n MCC met n ligte geel kleur vol energieke en tog elegante borrels. Dit het wondelike geure van pere, perskes, lemmetjie en groen appels en sekondêre geure van gis en beskuit. Dit is heerlik saam met sagte kase en patee. Hierdie vonkelwyn is slegs beskikbaar vanaf De Krans teen R140 per bottel. De Krans se 2012 Cape Vintage Reserve Port het n lewendige dieprooi kleur met intense aromas van pruimedante, speserye en tabak. Die smaak is sappig met gekonsentreerde vrug en n uitstekende tannien-balans. Hierdie port het reeds n hele rits toekennings ontvang soos n Platter 5-ster toekenning in die gesaghebbende 2015 Platters Wyngids (reeds die 10de 5-ster port van De Krans agtereenvolgens), n Top 100 SA Wyn toekenning en die Tony Mossop Trofee vir die Beste Port in SA by die 2015 Old Mutual Trophy Wynskou. Dit is ook in 2012 aangewys as die SA Kampioen Port by die SA Jongwynskou. Hierdie besonderse port is landwyd beskikbaar teen ongeveer R275 per bottel. De Krans se 2014 Touriga Nacional (beskikbaar by geselekteerde drankwinkels teen ongeveer R85 per bottel) en 2013 Tinta Roriz (slegs beskikbaar direk vanaf De Krans teen R60 per bottel) het beide ook CAPPA Top 10 toekennings ontvang vanjaar n duidelike bewys dat hierdie unieke Portugese kultivars floreer in Calitzdorp. 2

More than 300 wine cellars entered 1655 wines in different classes in this challenge to be judged by a panel of renowned international wine critics. Boplaas was the proud recipient of one double gold and four gold medals. The double gold was awarded for the Boplaas Cape Tawny Vintners Reserve NV. The Boplaas Touriga Nacional Family Reserve 2012; the Boplaas Cape Vintage 2013; the Cape Vintage - The Chocolate Port 2011 and the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2012 were honoured with gold medals. These results follow on the previous year's achievements, namely the three double gold medals that were awarded in 2014 for their Boplaas Gamka Reserve (red blend); Boplaas Bobbejaanberg Sauvignon Blanc 2014 and Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Boplaas wines also performed exceptionally well at other wine shows this year, walking away with the coveted title of SA Champion Port at the SAYWS (SA Young Wine Show), as well as being awarded the title of Best Port in SA at the CAPPA Challenge A true testament to their patience and craftsmanship, the Boplaas Reserve Cape Tawny N/V is a blend of only the finest Cape Tawny crafted from Tinta Barocca and Touriga Nacional, matured in old 500l port 'pipes' (from the Portuguese word for barrel, pipa) for twelve to fourteen years prior to blending. This lusciously complex fortified with its amber colour, heady aromatics and nutty flavour profile offers those lucky enough to broach a bottle or two the opportunity to taste a rare fine example of Boplaas Cape Tawny. Regarded by many in Portugal as that country's premier grape varietal and mainstay of many fine Ports over the years, Touriga Nacional is a passion at Boplaas. This hardy, yet shy bearing vine allows for the crafting of exceptionally aromatically expressive and age-worthy wines. A mere 2500 bottles of the Boplaas Touriga Nacional Family Reserve 2012 were hand crafted from a combination of fruit originating from vines in Stellenbosch, Wellington and Calitzdorp. Apart from its inclusion in South Africa's 2015 TOP 100 wines, it also won one of only three gold medals at the CAPPA Challenge 2014 for table wines, and also took its place in the CAPPA TOP 10. Crafted from a trio of Portuguese varieties ( Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional and Souzao) according to traditional techniques, the Boplaas Cape Vintage 2013 will offer exceptional drinking pleasure over the coming decades if well cellared. Ripe black plum, sweet spice, firm tannins and unmistakable hints of coco nib and dark chocolate that is what old vine Tinta Barocca consistently delivers. This unique varietal was the creative spark behind the development of another Boplaas winner, the Cape Vintage The Chocolate Port an utterly enjoyable Boplaas fortified. The Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2012 was crafted from a quartet of hand harvested old vine Portuguese varieties. Traditional vinification techniques were utilised, including extensive manual pigeage in open top lagares and ageing in old large-format oak barrels, prior to bottling unfined and unfiltered. This benchmark Cape Vintage Reserve was crafted in miniscule volumes from the finest fruit of the vintage and is destined for decades of enjoyment if carefully cellared. Best enjoyed decanted in its youth accompanied by hearty rustic country fare such as springbok pie, waterblommetjiebredie, braised beef short-rib or slow roast leg of Karoo lamb or as a failsafe with decadent dark chocolate, aged hard cheese, preserved fruits or charcuterie. One hundred years of successful hard work, with so many schools around them closing down, one after the other. In 1918 there were outlying schools in Groenfontein, Buffelskloof, Buffeljagsfontein, Gamka-Oos, Gamka-Wes, Huisrivier, Janfourieskraal, Kruisrivier-Wes, Uitvlug, Warmbad en Warmwater. Sadly over the years most of the little schools have closed down. And today how many remain? Calitzdorp take note so much is lost to history. Rentals are based on a hour to hour basis. Very important with regards to returns: the office close at 17:00 from Monday - Friday and at 13:00 on a Saturday. We are closed on Sundays, but arrangements can be made in advance. Our bikes come with a helmet. They are perfect for exploring the town. Forget about the traffic and enjoy the town sights at your own pace, while breathing in the rich culture of Calitzdorp. Our bikes are also ideal for the more challenging trips. If you re interested in exploring Calitzdorp s natural surroundings then this bike s for you. Cuisine: The chef s; Anup Bagasi, favourite dishes, tastes from the Indian continent to the continental Europe. Chef Bagasi studied Culinary Arts at the Institute of Hotel Management in Hyderabad, India. Local, seasonal produce will be used to create the food. The menu will change every fortnight. No liquor license, so bring your own and only a nominal corkage fee will apply. Ambience: Old world charm, seating inside the charming old cottage and outside in the beautiful back garden.
