11 NEW IN 2014 Chairman of Judges & Associate Judges Commencing in 2014 there will be a new appointment as a Chairman of Judges. Effectively this will mean there will be nine full Judges (three each per panel) plus a Chairman of Judges as is similar in other wine shows. Also in 2014 there will be two Associate Judges per panel (six in total rather than the four which operated previously). This is to assist with the development of a talent pool within the Margaret River wine industry. Class Changes Extensive changes have been made to many Classes in These vary but focus on separating vintages and a better grouping classification for Red and White wines. PLEASE NOTE that these changes have not impacted upon the number of wines that can be entered per Class. Rule C in the Wine Show Regulations on page 12 states that up to three different wines per Class per Exhibitor can be entered. The Single Vineyard Estate Reds other than Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Sauvignon Predominant Blends has been removed for Alternative Styles & Emerging Varieties New Classes There are a growing number of wine producers who are taking development and innovation to new scales across the spectrum of variety and alternative styles. For example natural small batch winemaking both with more traditional varieties as well as those relatively new to Margaret River like Alicante Bouschet and Fiano. To accommodate this new area of exploration another entry category has been created entitled ALTERNATIVE STYLES & EMERGING VARIETIES with a reduced minimum commercial case requirement. Please note that this category will be assessed as per the Judging Process as declared on page 17 but will not be eligible to be considered for any trophy in International Judges Trophy A new perpetual trophy has been developed and will commence in 2014 called the International Judges Trophy. All GOLD medal winning wines from classes 1 38 will be eligible and it will be awarded at the sole discretion of the visiting International Judge(s) that best represents, in their opinion, a Margaret River wine of provenance. Online Entries Online Entries will be available from It is the Association s strong preference that entries be recieved online from now on. Hardcopy entries will also be accepted. Entry forms are available from the Association s website at Gala Awards Dinner The 2014 Gala Awards Dinner will take place at Aravina Estate on the Thursday of the Wine Show (27 November), not on the Wednesday as in Masterclass The Masterclass will be held at 2pm for a 2.30pm start on MONDAY 17 November at Aravina Estate. Exhibits must comply with all Commonwealth and State Acts, governing the production and labelling of Australian wine. In particular Australian Wine & Brandy Corporation Act, State Food Act and ANZ Food Standards Code (Standard 4.1.1). C. No wine may be entered in more than one class. An exhibitor may not enter more than three different wines in any one class nor the same wine more than once in any one class. D. Exhibits eligible for the Single Vineyard Trophy must contain a minimum of 95% of wine produced from a single named vineyard, the name of which appears on the commercial label of the wine. The named vineyard must be a single block, contiguous and defined to the satisfaction of the Margaret River Wine Association. E. The exhibitor must be the producer/proprietor of the commercial mark under which the product is sold. F. Wines must be entered under the principal brand name - NOT under a parent/subsidiary company name. The entry should reflect the label. It is a requirement that wines are entered into the class which most reflects how they are or will be commercially labelled. G. Wineries must hold the minimum quantities of stock in bottle. Wine that is not bottled as at 17 November 2014 is ineligible. i. Classes cases (9L equivalent per case) ii. Class 34 and Classes cases (9L equivalent per case) iii. Classes and Classes No case requirement H. Exhibits must be from commercially bottled stock, preferably carrying the exhibitor s normal commercial label and bottled prior to 17 November The wine exhibited for judging therefore must be the same wine made available for sale through general distribution channels including retail outlets and/or cellar door. I. Tank or barrel samples will be disqualified (see Audit ). J. Vintage, variety and varietal blend composition must comply with Australian Label Integrity Programme (LIP) regulations. K. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon blends must be entered into the appropriate class, as named on their commercial label. For instance, if a wine is labelled Cabernet Merlot, it must be entered into a Cabernet predominant blend class. (Refer AWBC Regulation 20) L. Cabernet Sauvignon Predominant Blends Classes 17-20, 32 & 38 must be blends of Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot ONLY. For example Cabernet Sauvignon with Shiraz should be entered in Classes M. Classes 39 and 40 are open to any commercial white wine or red wine respectively that can be considered to be alternative in style and or made from a new variety to Margaret River. Please note that this category will be assessed as per the Judging Process as declared on page 17 but will not be eligible to be considered for any trophy. N. Wines may, at the discretion of the Association CEO, Chief Steward or Chair of Judges, be transferred to more appropriate classes. Page 12

14 O. Exhibitors must be producers of wine for public sale and licensed as per the laws of the Western Australian State Government Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor. P. Classes 41 and 42 only are open to non-commercial labels produced by growers, students, winemaking amateurs etc. These wines will receive commendations only. Wines must use Margaret River GI fruit. The wines entered in these classes will not be eligible for trophies. Q. The Margaret River Wine Association reserves the right to accept, reject or disqualify any entry. Any exhibitor breaking any regulation may be disqualified from this and future shows. R. All exhibits become the property of the Margaret River Wine Association and will be used for marketing and promotional purposes. PROVISION OF WINNING WINE Exhibitors who are Gold Medal winners for Classes 1 34, 39 & 40 will be required to provide the Association with one case (12 bottles) of the award winning wine. If requested a second case (12 bottles) of the award winning wine is to be provided to the Association at wholesale price. This includes making the wine available on Thursday 27 November 2014 for the Gala Awards Dinner (if requested). Additional bottles of Trophy winning wines may also be requested for the Exhibitor Tasting if all bottles entered have been opened during judging. The Association utilises the wine supplied for tasting with international visitors, promotional displays, product placements and future wine dinners. This will continue in 2014 and beyond seeing a far greater emphasis on highlighting success at the Margaret River Wine Show with other Association events and initiatives; for example the Margaret River Wine in Melbourne and Perth tasting days and dinner. Please note this wine will become the property of the MRWA and, as an asset, is fully auditable each financial year.
