Designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, Park Güell is a garden complex located in the Gràcia region of Barcelona. The entire park is made of stone, ceramic, and natural elements. The entrance of the Doric Temple, or Hypostyle Hall, reveals a hallway with hollow columns that serve as storm drain pipes and mimic the natural growth of forest trees. 3 Opimian s Wine Consultant Jane Masters MW is a graduate of Bordeaux s famous Institut d Oenologie and was elected to the Institute of Masters of Wine in Fluent in French and English, Jane is currently a member of the Council of the Institute of Masters of Wine, regularly speaks at industry seminars and is a Panel Chair for the International Wine Challenge. CELLAR OFFERING 213 Alsace, Spain and Portugal Harvest in Europe kicked off in September for most places. The reports that were coming in suggested that crops were down in many regions due to drought and volatile weather conditions; this is especially true for Spain and Portugal. As if these countries didn t have enough woe already with struggling economies and difficult trading conditions! Despite this, people remain optimistic and there are some great wines from the last few vintages to be had from both countries. We start this cellar offering with wines from Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr based in the heart of Alsace. You will find wines mostly from the 2011 vintage which are already showing very well, particularly the Pinot Gris Grand Cru Rosacker. To commemorate Opimian s 40th Anniversary, two wineries have produced special blends. Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr oenologist Nicolas Garde has created the Riesling Cuvée des Quarante Printemps, a blend of the fruit from two Grand Cru vineyards. From Spain, Bodegas y Viñedos O. Fournier presents the Alfa Spiga Opimian 40th Anniversary Blend, made with specially selected barrels of Tinta del País from the 2007 vintage. 4 Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr Alsace Alsace lies in the far north eastern corner of France, on the border with Germany. It sits in the flanks of and is protected by the Vosges Mountains. Geology in this region is one of the most diverse in France as it lies between parallel fault lines that have shifted over time, exposing soil of differing levels and ages. 5 6849 $20.00 $ Riesling, Cuvée des Quarante Printemps, 2011, AC Alsace (Engraved wooden case) Specially selected to commemorate Opimian s 40th Anniversary Winemaker Nicolas Garde has specially created this wine to celebrate Opimian s 40th Anniversary, a half and half blend of Rieslings from two Grand Cru sites. Rosacker brings freshness and crisp acidity, due to the characteristic pale limestone soils, while the deep clay marl soils of Schoenenbourg, in the neighbouring village of Riquewihr, bring weight, depth, and length. Still very young and closed when tasted, this wine will develop and open up over the next few years. Riesling Lime, mineral Good mid-palate weight, balanced, long finish, [02] , M6 D7 Crab-stuffed sole paupiettes with white wine sauce 6850 $14.67 $88.00 Crémant d Alsace, Calixte Brut, AC Crémant d Alsace, NV Awarded a gold medal in Paris, the Crémant Calixte Brut is produced from a blend of three traditional Alsace varieties together with Chardonnay, which is only permitted for Crémant in the region. After second fermentation in bottle the wine was aged prior to disgorgement, adding a yeasty doughy characteristic. It is well-balanced and the 9 grams per litre of sugar are perfectly offset by the wine s natural acidity. Pinot Blanc, Pinot Auxerrois, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris Doughy, bready, fruits Balanced with depth, [02] 10 C , M8 D9 Aperitif, flambée tarte 6851 $15.67 $94.00 Peter Weber, Brut Rosé, AC Crémant d Alsace, NV This special edition Brut Rosé is made from 100% Pinot Noir. A short maceration of the skins gives the wine its salmon pink colour. With red fruits on the nose and a fine mousse with small bubbles, it is complex with the depth typical of Pinot Noir. The wine was aged for a year prior to disgorgement and release, and has a touch more sweetness than the Calixte Brut. In this case three of the so called noble varieties, Muscat, Riesling, and Pinot Gris, have been blended with Pinot Blanc. Quite light with aromas of melons and pears, it is fresh with a slight spritz on the palate and is perfectly ready for drinking. 6 6853 $13.00 $78.00 Riesling Réserve, 2011, AC Alsace In contrast to Germany, which traditionally made low alcohol wines with residual sugar, Alsace made its name by producing dry wine styles. However, it must be said that these stereotypes have become somewhat blurred over the last few years. The Riesling Réserve has limey fruit, is dry and balanced on the palate, and ends on a crisp green apple note. In 2011, after a cold winter, spring came early with warm temperatures followed by a wet and cool July and August. Fortunately the sun and heat returned in September and October, leading to fully ripe fruit. It has a refined elegant lemon citrus nose, light body with zesty acidity and freshly squeezed lemon and lime flavours. It is produced not from one, but two varieties of Muscat, the oldest variety being the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and the more recent Muscat Ottonel. 7 6855 $12.83 $77.00 Sylvaner Cuvée Prestige, 2011, AC Alsace Sylvaner, considered one of the lesser grape varieties of the region, can sometimes be fairly neutral and acidic. This example has clean fruit with a mineral characteristic and good depth. Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr is one of the best cooperatives in Alsace. Its members own 200 hectares of vines and winemaker Nicolas Garde gives advice on how to get the best out of them. Sylvaner Fruit, mineral Pure mineral style, [00] , M9 D9 Alsace onion tart 6856 $13.17 $79.00 Pinot Blanc, Cuvée Prestige, 2011, AC Alsace Pinot Blanc, the most widely planted variety in Alsace, can be an extremely food-friendly white that is good with seafood, pasta, risottos or onion tart! When tasted, the 2011 was quite full-bodied with a honeyed nose, and soft white fruits and melon flavours. Ageing on lees has given it a broad structure. Relatively low in alcohol at just below 12%, it is completely dry. Pinot Blanc Honey, melons Broad palate with relatively low acidity, [00] 8 C 2013, M9 D9 Trout parcels with herbs and a vegetable julienne 6857 $15.00 $90.00 Pinot Gris Cuvée Prestige, 2011, AC Alsace The characteristic smokiness of Alsace Pinot Gris, which differentiates it from wines made from this grape in other regions, is really present in the Cuvée Prestige. It is combined with fresh melon fruits, some sweetness and a long finish. Believed to be a mutant of Pinot Noir, the Pinot Gris grapes can range in colour from grey-blue, hence its name, to brownish-pink. It has been going since 1948 and aims to single out the best wine of Alsace from each variety. Gewurztraminer is full-flavoured and sometimes tends to be flabby and lacking balance. Hunawihr s is more restrained in nature, with lemons and a mineral style. Despite its 17 grams of sugar per litre and 13% alcohol, it feels light and fresh on the palate, perfectly balanced by the acidity; no surprise it won Gold! 8 6859 $15.67 $94.00 Pinot Noir, 2011, AC Alsace, Médaille d Or Paris Pinot Noir is the only red grape variety which is permitted in Alsace although it is notoriously difficult to work with in both the vineyard and the winery. Winemaker Nicolas Garde previously worked in Burgundy and since arriving in Alsace has always been passionate about producing quality Pinot Noir. He was rewarded earlier this year with a gold medal at the Concours Général Agricole Paris. This site, with full south orientation and its limestone clay, was already recognized in medieval times for the potential quality of its grapes. The 2011 Pinot Gris has intense ripe fruit with quince and toffee. On the palate it has great depth with the 15 grams of sweetness perfectly balanced by the acidity, leaving a long apricot finish. This warm, deep terroir, similar to the Grand Cru Rosacker, is ideal for the cultivation of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. It has an intensely aromatic fruit nose, with lemon, mango, floral and mineral aromas. The palate is rich and honeyed with 29 grams of sugar and a syrupy texture, yet it remains elegant, lingering on floral and spicy vanilla notes. Typical lime fruits on the nose lead to a palate with pure solid Riesling structure, depth and weight. The wine has a delicious crunchy green apple and lime finish with the potential to age for years to come. 9 The primary vine-growers of the Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr - a cooperative of considerable size that produces tailor-made wines 6863 $19.33 $ Pinot Gris, Grand Cru Rosacker, 2010, AC Alsace The 26 hectares of Grand Cru Rosacker sit in the village of Hunawihr. The clay limestone soil contains dolomitic pebbles with sandy scree from the Vosges Mountains. The Grand Cru is also home to the famous Clos Sainte Hune. Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr cultivates a total of eight hectares in Rosacker, of which 1.5 hectares are Pinot Gris. The vines face east/south east at an altitude of 260 to 330 meters was not an easy vintage, with cold wet periods during the summer, resulting in heterogeneous wine quality. However, this wine is a success with spicy honeyed notes and great depth due to the quality of this terroir. Pinot Gris Honeyed, earthy Sweet, good balance and depth, [06] , M8 D9 Roasted spiced guinea fowl 6864 $25.33 $ Riesling, Vendanges Tardives, 2009, AC Alsace An exceptional wine with honey nose, smoky notes, and mango combined with earthiness, the 2009 vintage was one of great maturity, and that shines through. After a long and cold winter, bud-burst was late, followed by an abnormally warm April and May and a hot sunny start to the summer. The grapes for the Vendanges Tardives were picked on October 30th, two months after the start of harvest. The 43 grams of sweetness are perfectly balanced by the acidity and the wine has the potential to age ten or more years. 10 Spain The limestone-rich soils of Conca de Barberà are home to this 40 year old Chardonnay vine Bodegas Concavins SA Montblanc, Barberà de la Conca, Catalonia Since our last cellar offering featuring Spain, the owner of Clos Montblanc, Luis Carbonell, sadly passed away. The estate is now owned by his daughter Pilar will be the first vintage without Luis, but Pilar is actively involved and the team, led by Antonio Casablancas and winemaker Josep Vadrí, is keen to ensure his spirit carries on. 11 COUPON $9.67 Montblanc 362 Viura/Chardonnay, 2012, DO Catalunya FREE CASE CHOICE FOR THIS CELLAR OFFERING Montblanc 362 is a blend of 60% Viura from 30 year old vines with 40% Chardonnay. Yields in 2012 were low, and in the case of Chardonnay down an incredible 40% on last year, due to the on-going drought. The wine is intensely appealing and aromatic with peardrops and white fleshy fruits. Medium-bodied it has nice weight deliciously balanced by the acidity. Viura, Chardonnay Peardrops, apples, pears Medium-bodied, delicious acidity, [00] 8 C , M9 D9 Tapas, grilled fish $ COUPON $9.50 Montblanc 362 Tempranillo/Cabernet, 2012, DO Catalunya FREE CASE CHOICE FOR THIS CELLAR OFFERING Produced from a blend of early ripening Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon harvested mid-october, winemaker Josep Vadrí carries out fermentation in stainless steel tanks at low temperature followed by a long maceration of the skins. Intensely coloured with concentrated aromas of blueberries, blackberries and violets, the wine is medium-bodied with firm tannins. It was aged for a short time in American oak barrels. The juice was left in contact with the skins for several hours prior to pressing. Fermentation was completed in three different types of oak barrels coming from Alliers, Nevers and the Tronçais forests giving it an intense toffee and buttery aroma with pineapple flavours. Rich and concentrated it has a long lemon and pineapple finish. Previously used as part of a blend in Cava, producers have recently been making single varietal still wines. Only a small quantity has been produced by Clos Montblanc since the 2010 vintage. Trepat is believed to be a local variant of Garnacha. Clos Montblanc farms these grapes organically on the family estate, with picking in late October, followed by ageing in oak. 12 6872 $10.92 $ Clos Montblanc Xipella, Premium, 2010, DO Catalunya Clos Montblanc sits among the leading estates in the region. Xipella, produced from three indigenous varieties, Garnatxa (Grenache), Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and Samso (Carignan) with Syrah, has a lovely, mellow vanilla and blackberry nose. Soft and juicy on the palate it has fine texture with good concentration. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was matured in oak for twelve months. Winemaker Josep Vadrí supervises this year s harvest of the Samso in Conca de Barberà, 5 km from the medieval village of Montblanc Garnatxa, Monastrell, Samso, Syrah Blackberries and cream Medium-bodied, fine texture , M7 D8 Pasta with veal sausage and porcini ragù 6873 $11.58 $ Clos Montblanc Merlot, Premium, 2009, DO Conca de Barberà This wine comes from a specific four hectare plot at an altitude of 560 meters on the slopes of the Miramar Mountains. Merlot grapes were harvested in the middle of October. In order to maximize concentration, some of the juice was drawn off. Fermentation in tank was followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel, with subsequent ageing for 12 months in American oak. Deep plum in colour, with earthy undergrowth and leafy developed aromas, typical of Merlot, it has good acidity and firm gripping tannins on the finish. 13 6874 $14.50 $ Clos Montblanc Masia Les Comes Reserva, 2008, DO Conca de Barberà 2008 was a very good vintage in Conca de Barberà. Sourced from the family s own estate planted in 1988, on terraces at 700 meters, the distinctiveness of the region comes through in the tight structure and concentration with typical herbal Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot flavours. The Merlot was picked in mid-september with the Cabernet Sauvignon a month later. After fermentation in tank the wine aged in barrel for 18 months. It has a fine tannin structure. 14 Vinoselección Madrid The Vinoselección head office is situated in a very nice quartier of Madrid. I spent a morning in the tasting room there with Maribel Gómez, her two buyer colleagues and the technical director, tasting a full selection of wines from around Spain. Times in Spain are hard. Unemployment is high and people are demonstrating in the streets against austerity measures. Yet, somehow the Spanish continue to battle on and keep their sense of fun; there are some really good wines to be had. Bodegas Sonsierra s clayey-calcareous soil layers climb the Ebro River to the Cantabrian Mountain range, which provides a natural defence to the unique micro-climate throughout the region 14 OPIMIAN CELLAR OFFERING 213 SPAIN Vinoselección >>

15 6875 $24.00 $ Alfa Spiga, O Fournier Opimian 40th Anniversary Blend, 2007, DO Ribera del Duero, Bodegas y Viñedos O. Fournier Specially selected to commemorate Opimian s 40th Anniversary A special selection produced for Opimian s 40th Anniversary by Bodegas y Viñedos O. Fournier, Tinta del País grapes from old bush vines grown at 800 to 850 metres were hand-picked and sorted at the winery. The grapes were left to macerate at low temperature and then fermented in oak vats. The wine was aged 20 months in oak barrel, 80% French and 20% central European, producing a wine with wild herbs and floral notes. Rich with depth on the palate it is tight and powerful and will mellow with some bottle age. This wine has great potential. Tinta del País Complex with depth, wild herbs, floral Powerful, tight, needs some time to mellow , M6 D7 Roasted pheasant with chestnut fennel fricassee 6876 $14.83 $89.00 Viña Ludy Albariño, 2011, DO Rias Baíxas, Viña Ludy Tucked away in the north western corner of Spain, close to the border with Portugal, is the DO Rias Baíxas. The strong Atlantic influence results in this being one of the wettest regions in Spain with an annual rainfall of 1600 millimetres and mild temperatures. The predominant variety is the thick-skinned Albariño grape. The Viña Ludy 2011 has typical aromas of white fruits, apples and herbs. Restrained on the palate, is has a deliciously crisp, long lemon and lime citrus finish. Albariño White fruits, green apples Blossoms, lemon and lime citrus finish, [00] 2013, M9 D9 Fillet of sea bass with tomato sauce al Albariño 6877 $14.83 $89.00 Sanz Sauvignon, 2011, DO Rueda, Vinos Sanz Rueda has seen dramatic expansion over the last few years, but Vinos Sanz has a history that goes back over six generations. The region has an extreme continental climate with cold winters and short hot summers. The average altitude of the region is at 600 to 700 meters. Since its set up in 1984 it has applied the principle of growing all its grapes. The 200 hectares of vineyards are around Gumiel de Mercado in the heart of the Ribera region and all are head-pruned bush vines. Grown at 850 meters, frost in the run up to harvest is a serious concern as temperature drops rapidly at night, often close to freezing. There are official archives detailing the shipment of Port to Britain as far back as The Port region was a remote area and has only been accessible by road since the 1980s.
