5 TASTING OF 2016 VINTAGE PORTS Welcome to this preview tasting of 2016 Vintage Ports. In the Douro Valley, with its complexities of climate and topography, no two vintages are ever alike. For the 2016 Vintage, the keynotes are refinement and harmony. With all their elements in perfect alignment, the wines show exceptional balance and poise. But the impression of elegance and finesse is deceptive. The 2016s are underpinned by a crisp acidity and by sturdy, superbly integrated tannins that provide impressive structure and grip. The weather pattern during the year played an important role in defining the character of the 2016 wines. Heavy rainfall in April and May replenished ground water depleted by the previous year s drought, creating reserves for the hot summer that would follow. The wet spring conditions resulted in lower yields in some locations and a late start to the maturation cycle. Early July saw the onset of hot, dry conditions that lasted for the rest of the summer. Ripening was even, gradual and rounded off by a spell of rainfall towards the middle of September. Estates that delayed picking until after the rains were rewarded by perfect harvesting weather, the cool nights contributing to well-balanced fermentations and gentle extraction. An important caveat is that 2016 was a year of low yields. The wines selected for the Vintage Port blends were drawn from relatively small batches. Volumes offered are lower than in 2007 and 2011 and allocations will be tight. Looking to the future, the 2016s are set to become one of the rarer Vintage Ports, particularly given the trend for enjoying Vintage Ports early. We hope you will enjoy these elegant and seductive 2016 Vintage Ports, which represent a heritage of experience and tradition combined with inspired and passionate wine making. 6 THE FLADGATE PARTNERSHIP The Fladgate Partnership is a group of three distinguished Port houses, Croft (founded in 1588), Taylor Fladgate (1692) and Fonseca (1815). It has been family managed throughout its long history and is dedicated entirely to the production of Port. Each individual firm maintains its own identity, traditions, vineyards and distinctive house style. These find their quintessential expression in each house s classic Vintage Port: the restrained power and longevity of Taylor, the heady opulence of Fonseca and the luscious and exotic fruitiness of Croft. Underpinning this diversity of individual styles is each firm s historical link with its quintas or estates. The group possesses one of the most extensive vineyard holdings in the Douro, including many of the Valley s most famous vineyards. Its dedication to the development of these unique properties and to the best in both old and new wine making practices make The Fladgate Partnership the guardian of the finest traditions in Port production.
7 TAYLOR S Taylor Fladgate & Yeatman was founded in 1692 and has been family owned and run throughout its history. The name Taylor s is synonymous with Vintage Port. Taylor s Vintages are recognized for their understated elegance and austerity in youth and for the inner strength and vigour which makes them among the most long-lasting of all wines, the ultimate collector s Ports. A hallmark of the Taylor s style is the distinctive scented quality derived from the wines of Quinta de Vargellas which make up the backbone of the Taylor s vintage blend. This famous property, which has been renowned for its ports since the 1820 s, was acquired by Taylor Fladgate in 1893 and also produces one of the rarest of all single estate vintage Ports, the legendary Vargellas Vinha Velha. The company s two Pinhão Valley vineyards, Quinta de Terra Feita and Quinta do Junco, also contribute their robust and powerfully fruity wines to the Taylor s vintage blend. TAYLOR S 2016 Deep purple black with a narrow magenta rim. High notes of pure, intense woodland fruit with lively accents of green apple, fresh plum and raspberry. Around this core of bright, singing fruit is a heady aura of garrigue, with wild scents of cistus and thyme. On a deeper register, exotic notes of cedarwood and jasmine provide an additional dimension of complexity. The wine has an attractive leanness and muscularity with sinewy, linear tannins that integrate seamlessly into the mid palate and then re-emerge to hold the wine in a confident grip. Energised by a racy acidity, the intense berry flavours continue to build into the long finish. Although the keynotes are refinement and poise, the wine displays the restrained vigour and stamina that are the hallmarks of the Taylor style.

Characteristically stylish and racy, with a nose of dense blackcurrant and woodland fruit overlaid with discreet herbal nuances and scents of violet and rose petals. As usual the classic Taylor elegance and understatement conceal the wine s energy and vigour. On the palate it displays the lean, sinewy and tightly knit tannins which are so much a feature of the Taylor style and the vibrant and clearly delineated fruit flavours which are the hallmark of the 2007 vintage. TAYLOR S 2003 V I N TA GE POR T B O T TLED IN Inky purple black with narrow magenta rim. Classic Taylor nose, with exotic scents of violet and gumcistus set against an impenetrable background of intense dark berry fruit. The 2003 Vintage Port shows a stylish and racy palate, displaying a tight fabric of sinewy tannins and packed with concentrated grapey flavours which intensify through the seemingly endless finish. Like many other great Taylor vintage this wine is an archetype of restrained power, its elegance and breeding concealing massive inner strength and stamina.

DE GAIA, PORTUGAL FONSECA Fonseca was founded in 1815 and is regarded as one of the most stylistically consistent of the classic Vintage Port houses. Every one of its Vintage Ports has been made by five generations of the Guimaraens family since its foundation. Fonseca produces one of the most exotic and aromatically powerful of all Vintage Ports. The heady opulence of a mature Fonseca Vintage is almost intoxicating in its power and complexity and it is this remarkable aromatic potential which ensures the longevity of the Fonseca Vintage Ports. The cornerstone of the Fonseca vintage blend is Quinta do Panascal, the firm s famous estate located on the steep slopes of the Távora Valley. The wines of Fonseca s two quintas in the Pinhão Valley, Cruzeiro and Santo António, are also traditional components of the blend. FONSECA 2016 Dense purple black with a narrow purple rim. The nose opens with very fine pure black fruit, a fusion of black cherry, cassis and blackberry jam aromas, with notes of crushed mint, an ethereal fragrance of violets and undertones of ripe tropical fruit. The year has added an additional layer of purity and refinement to the subtle, complex Fonseca fruit character, as well as an attractive minerality. The palate is supported by a vibrant acidity and taut, wiry tannins that provide structure but also texture and volume. The fresh berry flavours carry into the long finish. A finely crafted and perfectly balanced Vintage Port. BOTTLED IN 2013
11 FONSECA 2007 Impenenetrable inky black colour with purple highlights. As would be expected of Fonseca, the nose is dominated by a massively potent and concentrated fruitiness, packed with dense blackcurrant and blackberry aromas. Notes of coffee and exotic wood and hints of wild herbs and mints. The palate is rich and luscious, with thick velvety and wonderfully well integrated tannins enveloped in succulent jammy fruit and rich dark chocolate flavours. FONSECA 2003 Intense purple black centre with narrow magenta edge. Nose bursting with potent complex fruitiness which is the hallmark of the Fonseca style. The fruit is rich and luscious, a harmonious blend of blackcurrant, raspberry, cherry and plum. Full bodied on the palate with tightly knit, chewy tannins which provide both volume and structure. The succulent jammy fruit flavours seem to last for ever on the incredible long finish. A big, opulent wine in the Fonseca tradition with the background and depth of flavour to ensure a long life in bottle.
12 CROFT Croft is the oldest port house with a distinguished history dating back to The Croft family, originally wine merchants from York, played an active and prominent part in the history of the Port trade. Croft is one of the most well known Vintage Port houses and has produced some legendary Vintage wines, notably the exceptional 1945 regarded as one of the best of this landmark year. The character of Croft Vintage Ports is one of the most distinctive and individual of all. Crammed with luscious plump jammy fruit in their youth, they develop great richness and complexity with age. The cornerstone of the Croft Vintage Port style is the firm s estate of Quinta da Roêda. Often described as the jewel of the Douro Valley quintas, Roêda forms a vast south west facing semicircle of terraced vineyard on the right bank of the Douro close to the village of Pinhão. CROFT 2016 Intense purple ruby core with vivid purple rim. The nose displays the ripe strawberry and blackcurrant fruitiness and resiny notes of rock rose and eucalyptus that are the essence of the Croft Vintage Port style. The palate opens with a surge of rich berry fruit flavour and is supported by a dense mesh of close-knit tannins. Although the wine displays some of the plump, rubenesque character of prior Croft vintages, the accent here is on symmetry and finesse. The characteristically exuberant fruit and heady herbal aromas are carefully modulated and the wine is classical in its proportions. An elegant and aromatic Vintage Port, perfectly poised between opulence and restraint.
13 CROFT 2007 Deep purple black with narrow magenta rim. The heady and powerfully aromatic nose displays a characteristic abundance of rich plump fruit and the exotic notes of eucalyptus and rock rose which are the hallmark of the Quinta da Roêda wines on which the blend is based. Juicy and luscious on the palate, with discreet and well fused tannins and a long generous finish. CROFT 2003 An opaque core with bright ruby rim. The nose just explodes from the glass: blackberry, bilberry, violets, morning dew and cassis all with superb delineation. The palate is full-bodied, magnificent and regal, with better definition and focus than the millennial port. Blackberry, blueberry, that sense of minerality coming through towards the finish, seamless with unnoticeable alcohol. Great finesse on the finish. this is Croft returning to past glories. Outstanding.

15 SYMINGTON FAMILY ESTATES The Symingtons of Scottish, English and Portuguese descent have been Port producers for five generations since 1882, though their Port heritage dates back fourteen generations through their great-grandmother Beatriz Leitão de Carvalhosa Atkinson, whose ancestors were among Port s pioneers in Seven members of the fourth and fifth generation of Symingtons work together in the business across their four historic Port houses: Graham s, Cockburn s, Dow s and Warre s. Today Symington Family Estates is the foremost producer of premium Port. The Symingtons are the principal vineyard owners in the Douro Valley, with 26 different quintas covering 2,240 ha, of which 1,024 ha are under vine. The family s vineyards are managed under sustainable viticulture practices and 112 ha are organically farmed the largest area of certified organic vineyard in the Douro. Symington Family Estates is unique amongst the major Port companies in that each working family member also farms their own private vineyard, alongside those under the family s joint company ownership. The Symingtons are leading innovators in Douro viticulture and winemaking with research vineyards at Quinta da Cavadinha in the Pinhão Valley, at Quinta do Ataíde in the Vilariça Valley and at Quinta do Bomfim. At Ataíde the family have planted a vineyard with 53 different grape varieties, as part of a long-term study to preserve indigenous varieties and to understand the impact of climate change. The first modern treading lagar was developed by the family in 1998 and was a significant advance in the making of premium quality Ports.
16 GRAHAM S Graham s was founded in Portugal in 1820 by two Scottish brothers William and John Graham and during the 19th century became one of the most highly regarded of all Port producers. Their success led to the building of the magnificent Graham s Lodge in Gaia in 1890, and to the acquisition in the same year of the famous Quinta dos Malvedos, one of the finest vineyards in the Douro Valley. In 1882, Andrew James Symington, son of a Glaswegian father and Shetlander mother, sailed to Porto to work for Graham s, thus beginning his family s long association with this famous house. Although he left shortly after to establish his own Port house, his grandsons acquired the company when the Graham family offered it for sale in Today Graham s owns the 85 hectare Malvedos estate together with its own small lagar winery, and the neighboring 22 hectare Quinta do Tua with its remarkable stone terraces. For nearly half a century, several members of the Symington family, whose heritage in Port dates back to the 17th century though Andrew s Anglo-Portuguese wife, Beatriz Leitão de Carvalhosa Atkinson, have worked to enhance Graham s superb Vintage Port reputation, whilst developing other famous Graham s Ports such as Six Grapes, Late Bottled Vintage and the company s exceptional Aged Tawny Ports. GRAHAM S 2016 Classic expression of the Graham s style: concentrated and opulent with layers of fresh, ripe, black-fruit flavours. Aromas of mint and eucalyptus with hints of dark chocolate. The Graham s 2016 combines superb complexity, firm but ripe tannins, structure and balance.
17 GRAHAM S 2007 Still showing the profound, intense colours of youth. Rich and complex floral aromas of violets, mint and eucalyptus from the Malvedos and Lages Touriga Franca give a very special elegance to this wine. The attractive rich, blackberry fruit, laced with dark chocolate, provides excellent texture. The schisty tannins underpin a remarkable structure and hold everything in balance. GRAHAM S 2003 Intensely rich, mature black fruit notes. Superbly balanced with black cherry flavours and fresh herb aromas. On the palate, endless layers of lovely ripe blackberry fruit are in evidence. Great depth of structure with rich liquorice flavours combine with generous tannins to give this wine outstanding complexity. Exudes youth in its long, opulent finish. A classic Graham s which will stay the course.
18 DOW S The story of Dow s, unusual amongst all the great Port houses, began in 1798 when a Portuguese merchant, Bruno da Silva, did the opposite of most contemporary Port merchants by establishing himself in London. New partners later entered the thriving company, which became Silva & Cosens and then Dow s when the two merged in Andrew James Symington joined as partner in 1912 and since then five generations of Symingtons have worked in the family company and in its Douro vineyards. Dow s was one of the first companies to invest in Douro vineyards, acquiring Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira in 1890 (25 hectares) and Quinta do Bomfim in 1896 (61 hectares). These two riverside estates define the style of Dow s Ports and each has its own small lagar winery where the finest Dow s Ports are made, including the unique Dow s Vintage Ports, Late Bottled Vintage, Reserve and Old Tawnies. DOW S 2016 Very Dow s in its intensity: dry, lean and focused, with the tension of a young thoroughbred. Typical deep, brooding aromas of black plum and Douro schist, with lavender and violet notes. Weighty and substantial on the palate. A beautifully toned wine of impressive structure.
19 DOW S 2007 Intense, concentrated and muscular. The wine shows typical Dow dry spiciness and brooding flavours of plums and cassis. The lithe, ripe fruit gives the wine an amazingly complex finish, combining liquorice flavours with broad tannins that underpin superb structure and balance. One of Dow s most celebrated Vintage Ports with a very long life ahead of it. DOW S 2003 Taut tannins still very much in evidence. The wine follows the traditional Dow s Vintage Port hallmark, which is slightly drier than the other leading houses while retaining the traditional opulence that is characteristic of all great Vintage Port. The compact frame holds a wine of immense body and depth. On the palate, the Dow s 03 has flavours of dark chocolate and peppery spice.
20 WARRE S Founded in 1670, Warre s is the first and oldest British Port company established in Portugal. The Warre s name is synonymous with the history of Port and the company was a pioneer of the Port trade. For more than three hundred years the company has produced some of the greatest Ports ever made. Lt General Sir William Warre, born into the already well-established Port family, joined the Duke of Wellington s Peninsular Army and had a brave and distinguished career in the Napoleonic campaigns from 1807 to 1814, where he played a leading role in the liberation of his native country. His contemporary diaries and letters are an invaluable source to historians. Andrew James Symington became a partner in Warre s in 1905 and assumed full responsibility for the vineyards, winemaking and cellars in 1912 on the return of the Warre family to the UK after two centuries in Portugal. The company was owned by the Warre and Symington families jointly until the Warre s finally sold their shares to the Symingtons in the 1950 s. Warre s is famous for the feminine elegance of its Ports which come from the relatively high 29 hectare vineyard at Quinta da Cavadinha in the Pinhão Valley, the 22 hectare vineyard at Quinta do Retiro in the Rio Torto Valley, and the 25 hectare Quinta da Telhada, in the upper reaches of the Douro Superior. WARRE S 2016 Typically Warre s in its fresh and feminine charm, exuding floral aromas of violets and rockrose. Supple, ripe black fruit flavours, underscored by good acidity, rendering superb balance and elegance. Long, lingering finish with delicate tea-leaf notes.
21 WARRE S 2007 Beautiful floral aromas with the exquisite balance and finesse coming from the famous old vines of the Retiro estate. This combines perfectly with the freshness imparted by the wines from the higher lying Cavadinha vineyards to produce lovely vibrant flavours of blackberry fruit.the sinewy tannins mesh with the supple and seductive fruit. This wine will run and run. WARRE S 2003 Mature rounded tannins, very well integrated. Fresh herbal aromas of rock rose combine with violet scents. Polished tannins underscore the wine s stylish structure which exudes typical Warre s charm. True to Warre s signature elegance and finesse this is an outstanding Vintage Port, enjoyable now but built to age for decades.
22 COCKBURN S Cockburn s was founded in 1815, the year of the Battle of Waterloo, by the Scottish brothers Robert and John Cockburn. Originally wine merchants in Leith, Scotland, their Port house was founded to secure a supply of wines from the Douro valley. Robert Cockburn declared on founding the company: The quality of the wine that is the first thing to be looked to. The next phase of Cockburn s history was forged by a group of remarkable families the Smithes, the Teages, and the Cobbs who followed Robert Cockburn s vision and developed the company into one of the greatest Port producers. Cockburn s Vintage Ports invariably fetched the highest prices at the international wine auctions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Cockburn s, which has a rich history of doing things differently, made its home in the Douro Superior, a region almost unknown to most Port producers in the 19th century. Today the company has two estates in the Douro Superior; the magnificent 97 hectare vineyard at Quinta dos Canais and, even further east, the small but beautiful 13 hectare vineyard at Quinta do Vale Coelho. The Symington family acquired Cockburn s in December 2010 after 48 years of multinational ownership, during which time the reputation of Cockburn s had waned somewhat. With the return to family ownership, the company was immediately refocused on its vineyards and on the quality of its Port Wines. Since that time Cockburn s Ports are once again winning international acclaim. COCKBURN S 2016 Aromas of red fruits with hints of clove and ginger. On the palate: focused red fruit flavours with a dry character and a long finish, marked by Cockburn s signature grip. The Cockburn s 2016 displays archetypal schistous-soil minerality, complexity and length.
23 COCKBURN S 2007 Very deep and intense colour. Lovely aromas of violets. Rich cassis flavours dominate the palate. Typically, dry and elegant Cockburn s finish. This vintage will be recorded as one of Cockburn s finest due to its great complexity of flavours, balance and rich tannins. The depth of this wine will ensure a long and perfect ageing potential.
24 SMITH WOODHOUSE Christopher Smith, Member of Parliament and Lord Mayor of London, founded a small company to ship Port from the Douro in The Woodhouse brothers joined in the early 19th century and the name Smith Woodhouse was established. By the end of the 19th century their Ports had established a fine reputation. Like so many shippers, Smith Woodhouse fell on hard times in the aftermath of the Second World War and the company was sold to a London-based wine importer, whilst the Ports were produced by W & J Graham s. In 1970, when the Symington family bought Graham s, they also acquired Smith Woodhouse. Today Smith Woodhouse is a specialist producer of fine Port and owns the small 5-hectare Quinta de Madalena in the Rio Torto valley. In blind tastings of Vintage Ports produced in recent years, critics often pick Smith Woodhouse for its extraordinary quality. SMITH WOODHOUSE 2016 Aromas of bergamot and tea-leaf, as well as floral aromas of rockrose and violets. Substantial on the palate, showing ripe, black fruit and liquorice. The seamless, peppery tannins give freshness and excellent structure.
25 QUINTA DO VESUVIO Quinta do Vesuvio is one of the Douro s great estates. It is situated far upriver in the Douro Superior, 120 kilometers from the Atlantic coast and just 45 kilometres from Spain. The Quinta s reputation for producing outstanding wines dates to the nineteenth century when the Viscount of Villa Maior wrote, All this wine is made scrupulously and to perfection this Quinta was made as if for princes. Since acquiring Quinta do Vesuvio in 1989, the Symington family has developed its legendary reputation. The family preserved the age-old method of treading grapes in the granite lagares that date from Teams of up to 40 men and women tread the grapes each harvest night. Vesuvio is one of the last Douro properties to maintain this tradition and all the vineyard s Ports are made in this way. The Vesuvio estate comprises 326 hectares, of which 133 hectares are under vine. Investments by the Symington family have turned the estate into one of the Douro s finest vineyards. Alongside new plantings, many of the mature vineyards from the 1970s have been preserved together with older, mixed variety vineyards, which contribute to the complexity and structure of Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Ports. QUINTA DO VESUVIO 2016 Aromas of Mediterranean hill-sides with lavender and resinous scents. Luxurious palate with delicious kirsch and ripe, dark-fruit flavours and a velvet-like elegance despite its intensity. Weighty with sinewy fruit. The muscular structure is underpinned by schistous-like tannins.

27 QUINTA DO NOVAL Quinta do Noval is situated in the heart of the Douro, with vineyards in the valleys of both the Pinhão and the Roncão, tributaries of the Douro river. Great wines have been produced here since 1715 when the vineyard was first mentioned in the land registries, but Noval s name was made with the 1931 declaration, which established the reputation of both the Quinta do Noval and the Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Ports. Quinta do Noval Vinhos is unusual among traditional shippers in being based in the Douro, and also in that its two greatest Ports, Quinta do Noval and Quinta do Noval Nacional, are always Single Quinta wines. Quinta do Noval Nacional is produced from a small 5 acre parcel at the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard where ungrafted vines continue to survive and to produce one of the most remarkable wines in the world. Very small quantities are made of the Nacional when it is declared, normally around 250 cases, making it one of the most sought after and certainly rarest of all Vintage Ports. The wines are vinified in lagares in exactly the same way as the other Quinta do Noval wines, but the Nacional is always different, taking its character from the uniqueness of the small parcel of Nacional vines.
28 QUINTA DO NOVAL Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is characterised by its purity of fruit and a fine and delicate quality that is typical of the wines of the property but which finds its most remarkable and enduring expression in the Vintage Ports. Equilibrium, harmony, finesse and elegance are hallmarks of its great Vintage Ports. These are declared in years when the wines, sometimes from just a small parcel of vines, show exceptional quality and come up to Noval s exacting standards. Even then, the wines selected for the Quinta do Noval Vintage Port blend represent only a small proportion of our total production. QUINTA DO NOVAL 2016

30 QUINTA DO NOVAL NACIONAL A small area at the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard planted with ungrafted vines and untouched by phylloxera. The word Nacional refers to the fact that the vines are Portuguese vines growing in Portuguese soil with no foreign root stock, and are therefore attached to the soil of the Nation. This great wine is a source of pride to the people of Portugal, and at its best the finest expression of the extraordinary terroir of Quinta do Noval. QUINTA DO NOVAL NACIONAL 2016

32 QUINTA DA ROMANEIRA Historic Quinta da Romaneira, dating back to 1757, is privately co-owned by Christian Seely. Acquired in 2004, the estate, with over 1000 acres, has been replanted with classic and experimental grape varieties, and a modern winery built for both Vintage Ports and the single vineyard table wines for which Romaneira is establishing an enviable reputation. Quinta da Romaneira is one of the largest estates on the region, with 3 kilometres of River Douro frontage. Thanks to the many valleys and promontories, it has several microclimates. Thus the single vineyard wines, made exclusively from grapes grown on the property, are a complex blend of sites one of the keys to their quality and character. The estate also has a long history of Vintage Port production. Our current Vintage Port, trodden by foot in the lagares, is made from wines from the older parcels of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca at the heart of the vineyard. QUINTA DA ROMANEIRA 2016
