4 A DAY IN THE ALENQUER WINE REGION LISBON, PORTUGAL PRE-CRUISE WINE TOUR Perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, overlooking a beautiful bay that is spanned by a replica of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge is Portugal s capital city of Lisbon. PORTUGAL'S CAPITAL CITY, LISBOA From the hotel you ll drive just over an hour before arriving in Alenquer, one of the nine sub regions of the Lisboa wine region. Alenquer consists of the inland countryside surrounding the town of the same name. Protected by the hills of the Serra de Montejunto is a winery at the forefront of the Portuguese winemaking revolution, Quinta de Chocapalha. A wonderful and enchanting wine estate, Chocapalha is not only known for its architecture, but also for its history, beauty and increasingly for its wines. With a little more than 100 acres of vineyards that date back to the 16 th century and the significant investments made by the current owners Alice and Paulo Tavares da Silva, their winemaker daughter Sandra Tavares da Silva is making wines that have earned 90-points from Wine Spectator and 4 stars from Decanter. 5 Upon arrival at Quinta de Chocapalha, you ll enjoy a tour of the estate followed by a wine tasting led by Sandra herself or a member of the oenology staff. After this, you will join the family for lunch at their charming house. After lunch you will depart for the medieval village (and former location of the Royal Family s summer home) of Cascais where you will have time to walk at your leisure, shop and enjoy the fresh sea breeze. Your drive back to Lisbon will follow the scenic Estoril coastline. 6 WINES & VIEWS FROM HIGH ABOVE THE DOURO PORT: PESO DA RÉGUA, PORTUGAL If ever a drink was synonymous with a country it s port the fortified wine from Portugal s Douro Valley. Surprisingly, this historic winemaking region is experiencing a revival, but not for port. This new attention is for the high-quality, mostly red wines being produced by a handful of Douro wine estates. Grapes for both port and these new wines are grown in the upper reaches of the Douro River Valley. Winding its way through this verdant narrow valley is a river lined with steep sloping hills and stunning terraced vineyards. The first wine producing estates in the Douro used rabelo boats to transport their wine barrels down to Vila Nova de Gaia in the city of Oporto, and today you ll get to retrace a portion of that journey. Quinta do Crasto When the Queen Isabel docks in Peso da Régua, you can join your hosts and spend the day at one of the more famous quintas (wine estates), Quinta do Crasto. In 2008, Wine Spectator ranked their 2005 Douro Reserva Old Vines red wine #3 in their annual Top 100 List and gave it a score of 95 points. Quinta do Crasto s infinity pool From Régua you will board a traditional rabelo boat and take a short cruise up river to Ferrão s quay, where you ll take a quick drive up to Quinta do Crasto. A member of the Roquette family will be there to welcome you and lead the group on a tour of their family s seventeenth-century estate. Along the way, you ll taste a selection of the estate s table and port wines. The 300-acre estate consists of a recently modernized winemaking facility, 70 acres of vineyards, and an infinity pool that overlooks the river and offers breathtaking views. Weather-permitting, a wine-paired, multi-course lunch will be served on the terrace next to the pool. After lunch, you will board a motorcoach that will take you the forty-five minutes to Pinhão, where you ll meet the Queen Isabel and rejoin the cruise. 7 THE OLD AND THE NEW WINES FROM THE DOURO PORT: OPORTO, PORTUGAL OPORTO'S WATERFRONT DISTRICT Since the 18th century, the city of Oporto has been synonymous with the production of Port, a longaging, fortified wine prized by the English and collectors around the world. However, it is the recent improvement of Portugal s still wines that have taken the wine-world by storm. Enjoy tastings at two outstanding wineries, delicious Ports at the centuries old Taylor s Port Lodge and an exciting array of rejuvenated still wines and a wine paired lunch at Churchill, Portugal s rising star. Both produce high quality wines that are rated among the best by Robert Parker and Wine Spectator. The history of Taylor s Port Lodge goes back to the mid 1700s when they became the first British shipper to buy property in the famed Douro River Valley. Taylor s is one of the oldest of the founding Port houses. The history of the firm is in many ways the history of the Port trade itself. Now well into its fourth century, it has thrived and prospered, establishing itself as one of the world s most respected historic wine houses. Taylor s 1992 Fladgate Vintage Port earned a perfect 100-point score from Wine Spectator, who also named it the number one wine of year in their 1994 Top 100 list. Taylor s modern equivalent, Churchill s, was founded in 1981 by Johnny Graham, whose family s roots in the Port trade date back to They sold their Port business in 1970, yet Graham found the draw of the wine business too strong and founded Churchill s Estates in Wine Spectator s lead Portuguese wine taster, Kim Marcus called Graham a spiritual father of the new generation of Portugal s vintners and included two of their wines in her 2012 top list of Douro still wines. 97 Pts.
