4 A TASTE OF ROME AND THE FOOD AND WINES OF UMBRIA 2-NIGHT PRE-CRUISE PROGRAM LIVIA & PAULO S CASTELLO DELLE REGINE One reason Food & Wine Trails loves Italy is our good friend Livia Colantonio. Livia, the daughter of a former top government minister, was trained at Le Cordon Bleu and is now the consummate Italian hostess. She and her partner, Paolo Nodari, own Castello delle Regine, a beautiful 1,000-acre estate that is home to 200 acres of vineyards, a 7,000 olive tree orchard, hunting reserve, deluxe bed & breakfast, and livestock operation with a herd of Chianina cattle (Italian breed of cattle and one of the oldest breeds known). The wines produced here have received recognition and high ratings from Italian publication Gambero Rosso and its influential wine rating guide, Vini d Italia, as well as Wine Spectator and wine critic Robert Parker. This two-night pre-cruise Rome and Umbria wine program includes one night in the Eternal City of Rome and one night in Umbria. Known as the green heart of Italy, Umbria is the only Italian region that borders neither the sea nor another country. Removed from outside influences, it has kept alive many of Italy's old-world traditions. As Livia s guests, you will enjoy a tour of the winery, a special tasting of their wines, dinner in the estate s restaurant, and accommodations in one of the estate s deluxe apartments. Finally, you will visit Orvieto, Umbria s grand hill town that sits majestically on a plateau of volcanic limestone called tuff, and enjoy a cooking demonstration and wine-paired lunch prepared by a chef that has been referred to as the most celebrated European chef at the James Beard House, one of the culinary world s most celebrated organizations. We encourage you to join your fellow group members in Rome before the cruise for this rare and special experience that a past F&WT traveler called, One of our greatest travel memories. ITINERARY Day 1 Independent Arrival in Rome Arrive in Rome and transfer on your own to the Fortyseven Hotel, a 4-star boutique accommodation recommended by Bon Appétit Magazine and the NY Times, and was named to Condé Nast Traveler s Gold List. An unbiased industry reference described the hotel as offering guests some of the nicest rooms in the city, and is in walking distance from many important attractions, including the Piazza Venezia and the Coliseum. 5 After you check into your room, the rest of the day and evening are free to be spent at your leisure. Dinner is on your own. WINES OF CASTELLO DELLE REGINE Day 2 Umbria [B, D] Highlight: Castello delle Regine & the country houses of Podernovo Begin your day with a fabulous buffet breakfast in the lobby of the hotel. You ll have several hours to explore Rome on your own. (For assistance with suggestions on what to see, please speak to your travel consultant). Lunch is also on your own. Later, you will return to the Fortyseven Hotel to meet the group and your guide for the drive to Umbria. Upon arrival at Castello delle Regine estate, you will check-in to your room in one of the 16 apartments in one of the four country houses of the estate s bed & breakfast, Podernovo. Each house has its own pool and is divided into one and two-bedroom apartments. You ll share a common living room, but stay in your own private bedroom with a private bathroom. This is a very quaint Italiancountry-style property that very few are lucky enough to experience, but shouldn t be missed. After you have settled into your room, the afternoon is yours to be spent by the pool, visiting the herd of Chianina down in the barn, or wandering the grounds of this amazing estate. In the evening, you ll be driven to the estate s winery for a tour and a tasting of Castello delle Regine s wines. Up at the main house, hosts Livia and Paulo will share an aperitif with you before returning you to Podernovo for a wonderful, multi-course, wine-paired dinner served in the estate s restaurant, Ristorante Podernovo. Livia designs the menu especially for the group and will include several traditional local dishes prepared with estate grown ingredients and products. 6 A van will take you and your luggage to meet the group and board the motorcoach. You ll ride through the beautiful Umbrian countryside and arrive at the charming village of Orvieto. You will start with a brief walking tour through the village streets and visit the Duomo, a 14 th century gothic cathedral considered to be one of the most important examples of Gothic architecture in Italy. HILLTOP TOWN OF ORVIETO CHEF LORENZO POLEGRI Orvieto is also a major player in Slow Food, a global, grassroots movement that links the pleasure of food along with a commitment to community and the environment, so it s only fitting your visit to this village includes a true culinary experience. Orvieto is home to award-winning Chef Lorenzo Polegri, who once prepared his brilliant food at the White House, and his cooking school in the Zeppelin Ristorante. Chef Lorenzo will demonstrate his cooking techniques and share some of his secrets before preparing a wonderful meal for the group. After lunch, the group departs Orvieto and continues on to Civitavecchia, where you will board the ship for the next part of your extraordinary journey.
