4 SPANISH FOOD, WINE & ARCHITECTURE TWO-NIGHT PRE-CRUISE PROGRAM Hotel Colon, Barcelona Spain Food & Wine Trails two-night pre-cruise Barcelona package offers guests the opportunity to experience and taste the Spanish Food, Wine & Architecture of Barcelona. This package includes two nights at the four-star Hotel Colon, conveniently located in front of the city s Cathedral and just a few steps away from Las Ramblas. Some say the best way to really get to know the culture of a place is to eat and drink your way through it. From the time you arrive until when you are dropped off at the pier that is exactly what you ll do. Truly a city for all the senses, Barcelona has a reputation for daring experimentation with art, design, cuisine, and more recently, in the wines flowing from neighboring wine-growing regions like Penedés and Priorat. The city is saturated with art; the influences of Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and architect Antoni Gaudí can be seen throughout the city. The city s culinary reputation and critical acclaim can be validated by the fact that Barcelona is home to an incredible twenty-one Michelin-starred restaurants. For these reasons and more, Barcelona is one of the world s best cities for a food and wine lover. Day 1 Independent Arrival in Barcelona [D] Highlight: Walking Tapas Tour Guests will arrive in Barcelona independently and transfer to the hotel on their own No other hotel in Barcelona offers what the Colon does: an unbeatable location that allows a great number of its rooms to enjoy a direct view of the Cathedral of Barcelona. The Plaza is a hive of activity during the day and typically quiet at night. The Colon is at the center of the Gothic district, the city s oldest and most historical district, where you will find fine dining, as well as some of the city s main attractions, museums and monuments. Barcelona Tapas Bar After settling into your room, you will join your fellow group members in the hotel lobby before the evening s walking tapas tour. Your knowledgeable, English-speaking guide will spend the next two and a half hours introducing the local cuisine that welcomes the new, while celebrating the old tapas! 5 It has been said that Spain owes much of its status as a mecca of progressive cuisine to these small plate dishes; Spaniards will try anything once as long as it s small! At each stop along your route there will be a glass of wine and one of the famous small plates waiting. The tour ends back at the Hotel Colón, where you can retire for the night or continue along with your newfound friends. Day 2 Penedés Wine Region and Parés Baltà [B, L] Highlight: Vineyard Jeep Tour, Wine Tasting and Lunch Buffet breakfast is included this morning in the hotel restaurant. You will meet your guide in the hotel lobby and depart for the Penedés wine region. Parés Baltà Winery The 200-year old Parés Baltà winery is a recent discovery of F&WT and one we re excited to share. Three generations have overseen the vineyards and winemaking operations, always respecting tradition but also bringing new and fresh ideas to the winery. Estate Tour at Parés Baltà Robert Parker s Wine Advocate describes Parés Baltà as having serious aspirations in their efforts for producing world-class wines. An organic winery, Parés Baltà grows 18 different grape varietals (12 red and 6 white) and produces 25 different types of wine. Upon arrival you will be greeted by a family member with a glass of the region s famous Cava and then transported in one of their four-wheel drive vehicles for a brief tour of their spacious estate that includes a mountain ridge and a gorgeous view of the Mediterranean Sea. Following that, you will enjoy a tasting of four of their wines then a leisurely multi-course Catalan lunch paired with their Cava and still wines. Day 3 Barcelona City Tour / Embarkation [B] Highlight: Gaudí s Parc Güell and La Sagrada Familia Buffet breakfast is included this morning in the hotel restaurant. You will check out of the hotel and meet the group in the lobby with your luggage for an early departure. Our four-hour city tour of Barcelona will take you to two of the city s most celebrated attractions: Gaudí s Parc Güell and his famous unfinished cathedral, Sagrada Familia. 6 Parc Guell, Barcelona One of the most important requests presented to Antoni Gaudí, was to create a garden city. Classified now as a World heritage property by UNESCO, the Parc Güell looks onto two unique mushroom-shaped buildings straight out of a fairy tale. Upon entering the gate you will be greeted by the awe-inspiring stairway guarded by a mosaic dragon that leads to the Hall of a Hundred Columns (even though it actually only contains 86 slanted Doric columns). On top of the hall is the large square which offers an extraordinary view of the town, surrounded by the famous and never-ending undulating bank where Gaudí's fantasy for color knows no bounds. The crowning end to the visit of this magical place is a look around the Casa-Museum Gaudí. The house of the architect allows you to size up the importance of his contribution to the world of architecture. Sagrada Familia is one of Gaudí's most impressive works. This enormous church, as yet unfinished, is a summary of everything that Gaudí designed. The architectural style of Sagrada Familia has been called "warped Gothic," and it's easy to see why. The rippling Gaudí's Sagrada Familia contours of the stone façade make it look as though Sagrada Familia is melting in the sun, while the towers are topped with brightly-colored mosaics which look like bowls of fruit. When Sagrada Familia is complete, the church will have a total of 18 towers, each dedicated to a different religious figure, and each one hollow, allowing the placement of various types of bells which will sound with the choir. 9 THE MAGIC OF MALLORCA PORT: PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN Most Americans are unfamiliar with Mallorcan wines because the majority is consumed locally and, until recently, few bottles ever left the island. Now, more and more people are visiting Spain s Balearic Islands for its wine. FOOD & WINE magazine s Ray Isle attests to this trend commenting that, Mallorca s beaches are famous, but it is producing some exceptionally delicious bottles and attracting a new kind of traveler. One of a handful of female winemakers on the island, Barbara Mesguida also represents the fourth generation of winemakers in her family. After eight years of running the family winery with her brother, she struck out on her own and started Mesquida Mora. She is 100% committed to the Biodynamic principle and in 2013 she began producing her white wines without added sulphites. Her first natural wine, a 2013 Acrollam Blanc, was just released last year. Next, travel through the expansive vineyard land at the base of the Serra de Tramuntana Mountains, to the oldest winery on Mallorca, Bodegas Ribas. Established in the year 1711, the 13 th generation is represented at this winery by the brother-and-sister winemaking team of Xavier and Araceli Ribas. Their 2001 Ribas de Cabrera, a blend of Manto Negro, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, received a 92-rating from Robert Parker, who claimed this wine must be tasted to be believed. 10 TUA RITA, A PERFECT SUPER TUSCAN DAY PORT: LIVORNO, ITALY Enjoy a perfect Super Tuscan day visiting the very first Italian winery to receive a perfect 100 score from famed wine critic Robert Parker. Considered to be rebels of the wine world, the term "Super Tuscan" came into vogue in the late 1980s, when a handful of reds from the Italian region of Tuscany gained some international attention. The wines were sold as vini da tavola, or table wines, because their use of international varietals, principally Cabernet Sauvignon, made them ineligible for official wine categories. They were "super" Tuscan reds superior in quality and outside of official premium wine designations. Today, one of the Tuscan wine estates making these super wines is Tua Rita. This family-run winery began as a humble family winemaking project conducted in a tiny, rustic cellar. Their renowned merlot, Redigaffi, received a perfect 100-point score from the Wine Spectator in 1997 and then in 2000 became the first Italian wine ever to receive the same perfect rating from Robert Parker.
