Jumilla The origins of the winery date from 1916, when Juan Gil Gimènez, great grandfather of the present generation, started getting involved in the world of wines, building a winery in the heart of Jumilla. His son, Juan Gil Guerrero, dedicated his whole life to the wine business, but it was the third generation who really consolidated the winery. Juan Gil Gonzalez together with his brother Paco, the founder s grandsons, forged an image of quality, reliability and efficiency with the present generation trying to maintain and improve as much as possible. In the nose it has a powerful aroma of red berries toasted and smoked notes from their aging in oak barriques. It has good structure with ripe and sweet tannins. The age of the vines is between 45 and 60 years old. ALBACEA Monastrell 4 months Intense, deep red cherry color. Powerful in nose, clean and complex with very attractive fruit aromas. On the palate are touches of ripe fruit and hints of new wood. Well-balanced, soft tannins and a very long finish. 4 The vineyards that produce the grapes and organic grapes of Honoro Vera and Honoro Vera Organic are located over 2,300 feet in elevation. These vineyards are over 30 years of age with little production because they are planted on a bed of limestone and sand, very poor in nutrients, ideal for this type of crop. 7 D.O. Calatayud ATTECA 100% Garnacha 10 months in French oak Bodegas Ateca has its headquarters in the locality of Ateca (Zaragoza), fourteen kilometers from Calatayud. Deep cherry color with intense aromas of red ripe fruit (raspberry) which combine perfectly with the spicy notes of cacao, vanilla and licorice which complement a noble aging. It is very fresh and fruity in the mouth. It has a notable finish where fruit and spice aromas come back via retro-nasal. The vineyard, planted on slate soil on sites at higher elevations of the area, is made up mainly of small parcels of old vines of Garnacha from the mountain hillside of Ateca and the surrounding villages. 8 BLAU CAN BLAU Blend 50% Cariñena, 25% Syrah, 25% Garnacha 4 months in French oak The Cariñena and Garnacha vines used for the production of these wines have an approximate age ranging from 25 to 40 years. The vineyards of Garnacha are around 2,000' in altitude in the area of Comudella de Montsant on slate soils, the Cariñena vineyards in Darmós and Masroig area on clay soils, and the Syrah vineyards are on limestone soils. The fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks for 10 days and then remained in French oak barrels for 4 months. 40% Cariñena, 40% Syrah, 20% Garnacha 9 months in new French oak Cherry and purple color tones, the wine exhibits a wonderful collection of attributes, aromatics, strengths and complexity that provides a window to the possibilities of the D.O. Montsant. Fruity and infused with the soils characteristics, it shows a wild, savory mouthfeel and a fresh and spicy finish. D.O. Montsant Montsant is a D.O. which has not yet shown its real potential as far as enological quality is concerned. Contrary to its illustrious neighbor Priorat, in Montsant one can work with characteristic varieties, each one planted in soils of different compositions, i.e. sand and clay for Cariñena, also called Mazuelo, lime for Syrah, and slate (known as licorella) for Garnacha. This project, together with the Gil Family and Victor Rodriguez, is lead in its technical aspects by the winemaker Nuria López Sarroca. MAS DE CAN BLAU 35% Cariñena, 35% Syrah, 30% Garnacha 18 months in new French oak Dark cherry color, showing a balance between the warm notes of macerated fruits and the nuance of the soil. In the mouth it is full, concentrated and rich, but not excessive, and well rounded as far as its aging in oak is concerned. It is made to please the professional taster as well as the amateur. 9 The grape varieties of Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell with which it is produced, this wine come from vineyards located between 700 and 1000 meters of altitude, sandy soils and high amounts of limestone, in the case of Garnacha Tintorera. The age of the vines is 30 years and they are located in sandy soils with high active lime. Femented separately in stainless steel tanks and then it stays in French oak for a period of 4 months. LAYA Type of wine: 70% Garnacha Tintorera, 30% Monastrell 4 months in French oak D.O. Almansa Atalaya Winery is a new project within Gil Family Estates in the Almansa D.O. It is located east of Albacete Province among Valencia, Alicante and Murcia, in the transit zone between the Castilian Plateau and the Mediterranean Sea. The winery and vineyards are located 3-km north of Almansa at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level. The soils consist mainly of limestone. The predominant grape varieties are Garnacha Tintorera, a variety native to the area, and Monastrell, from which this project builds its wines. It is a pleasant wine, refreshing and original. ALAYA TIERRA Garnacha Tintorera is known for its deep color and here it coats the glass and imparts aromas of brooding black fruits, licorice, expresso and pepper. Dense, savory and rich. 100% Garnacha Tintorera 15 months in French & American oak Earth, underbrush, and mineral notes along with brooding black fruits form this wine s inviting bouquet. Dense and layered. It's alcohol is in balance with the wine s strapping personality and helps provide for a silky texture and lush finish. PAGE 9
10 SHAYA Young White 100% Verdejo (Old vines) It displays a nose of toasty baking spices, nutmeg, spring flowers, marzipan, and pit fruits. A bit richer and more complex on the palate than the usual cuvee, this vibrant effort could evolve for 1 to 2 years but is drinking well now. D.O. Rueda SHAYA HABIS ARINDO White wine fermented in barrel 100% Verdejo (Old vines) 7 months in new barrels of 500 & 600 L Greenish gold. Musky aromas of peach pit, lemon rind and pear, with a smoky overtone. Concentrated, tactile and dense, with a sappy, mineral quality to its orchard and pit fruit and spice flavors. Finishes bright and long, repeating the spicy note. Shows the richness of its old vines. Young White 100% Verdejo Ripe, bright tropical notes of pineapple and mango on the nose with sweet/tart apple and pear flavors. A structurally balanced wine with nice minerality to complement the enduring finish. Ideally suited to the poor soils and harsh environment in the Appellation of Rueda, the vineyards of Verdejo are located in the west of Segovia, and planted in very sandy soils covered with alluvial pebbles. Stress on the vines and wide diurnal swings, where temperatures can tumble as much as 25 degrees at night, help to create the fundamental acidity that Verdejo is known for. Rueda itself is geographically unremarkable; mainly flatlands, though high in altitude, about 2,300' above sea level for most of the region and some areas even get snowfall. The winery and vineyards are located in the most southwestern part of the appellation in the province of Segovia. The grapes for this wine come from 30.5 hectares of very old Verdejo vines, with low yields (2.5/ha). The vines were planted in sandy soils in vaso system, which makes it possible that many of them are ungrafted. The vineyards have a surface layer of small-sized river gravel and a deeper layer that consists of clay. \Technical direction is provided by Belinda Thomson of the Australian Crawford River winery in the area of Victoria, and Alastair Gardner. 11 Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon The vineyards of Tempranillo, planted on sandy soils in the traditional vaso system, are located in the areas of El Pego and Villanueva de Campean within the Province of Zamora. The hand-picked grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks aging for at least 6 months in French oak barrels. TRIDENTE Tempranillo 100% Tempranillo 15 months in French oak Tempranillo grapes, from which this wine is produced, are from very old vines with very low yields, and are located in the areas of Villanueva de Campeán and El Pego within the Province of Zamora in the regions of la Tierra del Vino and Toro respectively. Some of the vines exceed 100 years old and are generally located on a top layer of gravel over very sandy soils. The fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks for 10 days, then moved to French oak barrels where fermentation was completed after 15 months. 12 REJÓN Tempranillo 20 months in French oak Rejón is the name of the best vineyard of Tempranillo located in the town of El Pego, in the Toro Appellation. This 130 year old vineyard is planted on a top layer of gravel over very sandy soils producing very low yields of less than one ton per acre. This very limited production reflects the typicity and genuineness of the indigenous grapes coming from this unique terroir. The grapes are carefully hand-picked in small baskets of 15 Kgs, fermented in small stainless vats and aged in 225 litre French oak barrels for 20 months. Guia Peñin (2015 v)..94 points TRIDENTE PRIETO PICUDO Prieto Picudo 15 months in French oak Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon Prieto Picudo grapes are autochthonous from the Province of Leon, bunches and grapes are small with a very high potential for the aging. The fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks for 10 days, then to French oak barrels where the fermentation ended and stayed for 15 months Inky ruby. A cool, mineral-driven bouquet shows scents of red and dark berries, violet, sassafras and licorice, with a blast of cracked pepper. Smells like Syrah. Lively but deep, with tangy red and blackcurrant flavors, along with notes of cola and vanilla on the back half. TRIDENTE MENCÍA Mencia 4 months in French oak Mencía grapes, from which this wine is produced, are from vineyards over 50 years of age, located in Cacabelos northwest of the Province of Leon in the region of El Bierzo. 13 D.O. Jumilla The Bodegas El Nido project is the result of the collaboration of the Gil Family and Chris Ringland (one of the best Australian enologists and author of Clio and El Nido) and others. The winery is located in the Valle de La Aragona, inside the Murcia district of Jumilla and surrounding area. The vineyards are 76.8 acres of very old vaso trained Monatrell vines oriented northeast, and 28.8 acres of 30 year old Cabernet Sauvignon planted on smooth hills looking north. Monastrell vines are planted in a foot deep layer of chalky stones over substrata of sandy soil. Cabernet vines are planted in vineyards with chalky, stony soil over a layer of sandy soil with clay. Explosive aromas of candied black and blue fruits, cola, vanilla and smoky minerals, with a suave potpourri quality gaining power in the glass. Sweet, sappy and expansive, offering palate-coating boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors nicely braced by juicy acidity. 14 Rías Baixas boasts a number of high-quality grapes; chief among them is Albariño, occupying more than 90% of the DO s vineyard area. The soils are largely granite with some chalk and clay. The earth here offers lots of minerals but few nutrients, making it perfect for wine-growing. The slopes encourage good drainage so the vines still reach deep into the earth. Given the high rainfall, that drainage is important. The neighboring Atlantic Ocean provides not only rain but also humidity, so growers have traditionally favored trellising their vines with pergolas, allowing air to circulate around the grapes, thereby preventing rot and fostering ripening. Fortunately, late summer is usually the driest part of the year, providing perfect ripening conditions for harvest in October. D.O. Rias Baixas LAGAR DA CONDESA Vineyards: Aged White 100% Albariño Partially in French oak This wine is made from Albariño grapes at the Lagar da Condesa winery located in the Valle do Salnés in Galicia, Northwest Spain. A percentage of the wine was fermented in 500 and 600 liter French oak barrels and the remainder was left on it s lees for approximately four months. The lees provide the roundness and structure on the palate and ensured the optimal conditions for aging this white wine. KENTIA Type of wine: Young white 100%Albariño The wine appears straw-colored with tinges of green. Fresh, crisp and fragrant with an abundance of flavors and aromas of melon, pear, peach, tropical fruit, and a subtle herbaceous element combine magnificently to produce this enticing silky white with pleasing minerality and refreshing acidity.
