As someone who knew nothing about wine, I found his talk fascinating. Who knew there were 10,000 varieties of grapes? Nunzio was able to speak about a difficult topic in a very clear way which was evident by the excellent Q&A at the end of his talk. This is a good chance to remind everyone we have Exploring Wine group, chaired by Fred Hajdak, whose next gathering will be held on 23 August. Photos are beginning to be posted of the luncheon, golfers and bowling. Next month, 1 September, we ll hear from Jim Elias, Executive Director of the Marin County Bicycle Coalition. Jim was recruited by Bob Bundy. I m looking forward to hearing from him. In October we ll hear from Marin County Sheriff Bob Doyle, thanks to Ted Pullen. Thanks to Bob Bundy, our newest member is Dr. Larry Bedard who will be welcomed into the group during the September 1 st meeting. Our membership chair, Maynard Willms, has worked very hard to create incentives to increase membership, but it all depends on each of you!! Please bring a guest to the next luncheon. It occurred to me that I ought to be doing something in Branch 7 other than writing these columns each month. When my wife, Dolores, said we needed to be doing more stuff together and suggested that we go bowling, I thought, good, I could also join the Branch 7 team. After watching a U-Tube how to bowl video, we declared Big Sir (Continued on page 4) LITTLE SIR Ken Kauer I am not a wine expert by any means but I do enjoy a nice glass of wine with a good meal. Now I know more about why I enjoy that glass of wine, thanks to Nunzio Alioto s presentation at the August luncheon. I recognize the importance of blending the food and wine at dinner parties or nightly dinners. It is not easy to find a wine to match everyone s palate when there are over 10 thousand wine grape varieties to choose from. Nunzio explained all the qualities we should be looking for while searching for our wines. He explained to us how weather, climate and landscape all affect the various types of grapes. Planting vines at a higher elevation produces a more acidic grape than planting on a valley floor. He explained the importance of the sugar content in the grape in determining when it was to be harvested, sometimes differing in different areas of the same vineyard. I never knew that all red wines were blends. It is how each winery does the blending and handling of the grapes which makes their brand unique in the marketplace. After listening to Nunzio we can realize why the wine sections in our stores are taking ever more shelf space. With all the choices available to us we could drink a different wine every night and never run out of new wines to experience. Nunzio is a master sommelier, one of only 150 in the world and only 6 in the U.S. He presented us with expert material in terms we could all easily understand not an easy task in the short amount of time available. In October our speaker will be Marin County Sheriff Robert Doyle. Also in September the new bowling season will start for SIR. We still need bowlers to fill out all of our teams. We bowl on Fridays from 10:30 to 1:30 at Country Club Bowl in San Rafael. The season runs for 33 weeks (until May), excluding holidays. The cost is $16 per week with a onetime charge of $28 to get a USBC card for league play. We start on September 9 th. Come and join us, meet other SIRs, and have a good time. See all of you at the September luncheon. 1 Bob Rigler, Secretary Minutes of the July 28 th meeting: Executive Committee Secretary: Minutes of the June meeting were corrected and approved to reflect Wine event details properly. The next wine event will be at 3 Birds in Corte Madera on Tuesday, August 23, 1 pm. Treasurer: Al Wuthnow distributed his July cash report. Current cash balance is at $6,135. We paid for 20 more SIR caps. Balances will decrease throughout the end of the year. Little Sir/Big Sir: Ken reported on our speaker lineup. September will be from the Bike Coalition, October s speaker is not confirmed yet. We are still looking for a November speaker, either CIA or MMWD. Dave Denning will speak in December. Robby wants to use the SIR website as a recruiting tool and asks us all to give him input and send photos. The exact link to the site: is listed in the July and August Horologium heading. Committee Reports: Fleet Week signups are still open. There are still Branch 22 events which our members may attend, (picnic September 8 and possible Italian night also). The Membership committee will continue to have a prominent display containing business cards, applications and trifold SIR brochures at every SIR meeting. Russ feels that Sunshine and Shadows needs more help in knowing when a member might be ill or facing any health problems. Wine group: The plan is to meet 4 times a year, once every three months, but subject to revision if holidays interfere and not corresponding to the quarters of the year (March, June, September, December) First two events were on 4th Tuesday of the month. Next event in the fall is not scheduled yet. Nothing is set in stone. The 4th Tuesday is however the "flexible" objective. I should mention neither of us had bowled since the age of 16. I thought my score of 86 wasn t too bad after 50 years and Dolores got a strike. So I showed up at Country Club Bowling on Friday morning (a little late) as our guys Ken Kauer (Chair & Little SIR), Lee Landry, Tom White, and Wil Swalberg, were competing against each other while Russ Wallace was with another group. I was glad I was a little late, since Wil, at 93, more than doubled my 86 score. I did take and post some photos on the web site. Anyway Little SIR Ken tells me the winter league begins on Friday, 9 September and he s looking for a few good or not so good players. If we can have 60 golfers, we should be able to get three or four bowling teams of 4 each see KEN. See you at the next luncheon on the 1 st of September. Remember to bring a check for $26 for the lunch and at least 5 bucks for the raffle.
