1 Services Now for Adult Persons, Inc WINCHESTER BLVD. BLDG. #4, CBU #29 QUEENS VILLAGE, N.Y Center Director Nina Bhola SNAP OF EASTERN QUEENS INNOVATIVE SENIOR CENTER CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER/PRESIDENT PAOLA MICELI, MPA CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER MARIAN LEWEK, LMSW EXECUTIVE BOARD CHAIR CHRIS PANELLINO NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2015 SPEAKING FROM THE HEART As a small child in a world that perhaps seemed overwhelming and frightening you held your mother s hand and it offered a reassuring sense of security and comfort. As you trudged through the glistening mounds of snow or prepared to cross a busy intersection, her outstretched hand was a source of encouragement and empowerment which provided a safety net that enabled you to face some of life s obstacles and dangers with increased confidence. As an adolescent or young adult dating and falling in love the warmth of those intertwined fingers with your new love reassured and energized you and allowed a growing trust and caring to evolve that nurtured you and provided a serene feeling of belonging and completion. Growing older, we become the nurturers, the givers, the sources of strength and comfort. Over time, it has become our hands that mold and shape, soothe and heal, strengthen and fortify the relationships that matter most in our lives. Our hands can be open and warm as we reach out to give to others and heartfelt and embracing as they enfold that which is most significant. As we have aged, we have learned the importance of working together, allowing our hands to form bridges of understanding and towers of strength. We have learned that an open hand can just as readily give as receive, and that both are essential. Life teaches us the importance of doing for others and allowing others to do for us. The circle of life has a way of presenting us with opportunities that allow us to reconnect with those precious traditions that have helped to define us and to pass these rituals and customs along to our future generations. As 2015 winds down and 2016 begins with its first tentative steps into tomorrow, may we reflect upon those individuals who made a difference in our lives as well as those to whom we contributed a significant mark. May our hearts be open to give with a full and open hand and to feel free to ask for assistance, guidance or simply companionship when the need presents itself. A New Year s wish for us all: May our hands be held out-stretched offering both the capacity to give kindness, love, understanding, and hope as well as to take it in; and may this new year bring us all closer in a world without terrorists but with only peace and lovingkindness. May you celebrate every new day, smile brightly, love fully and engage meaningfully.because you can! HAPPY HOLIDAYS With love, Marian A NOT FOR PROFIT AGENCY FUNDED UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT FOR THE AGING AS PART OF THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT PROGRAM, ADMINISTERED BY THE NEW YORK STATE OFFICE FOR THE AGING

12 MESSAGE FROM THE SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR The holiday season is finally here and it is so important that we show how thankful we are for all that we have. We are fortunate to have each other and a center where we can come together and spend quality time and share experiences. Here we get to enjoy a wonderful assortment of activities over the comfort of a delectable meal and companionship. Let's all remember that when we leave the center, not everyone is as fortunate to have somewhere to go or someone to talk to. For those friends and acquaintances that don't get out as much, please stop by and say "Hello" and remind them that someone is thinking about them this season. Please check on your neighbor. During this time of year, we spend time with family and friends reminiscing often times forgetting to check on our neighbors. It doesn't cost anything to be kind or thoughtful to someone especially if they are not expecting it. Be generous with your smiles and laughter; be compassionate and sensitive towards others. We may have had a hard day, but we never know if the next person had it worse. With this simple gesture, the sentiment of compassion, and the giving aspect of the season brings us together. The true meaning of the holidays shines through us. Lastly, as the year comes to an end, it was my pleasure to be of service to you and it is my hope that as the new year approaches, I will continue to provide you with exceptional programming and services. Let the brand New Year discover you fresher, happier, healthier, more joyful, more cheerful and more fulfilled than the year past. I wish you a blessed and happy holiday season. All the best, Nina Bhola ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD At the Open Advisory Board meeting held on November 16th, we held an election for the open seat on the board. The board members introduced themselves again so that members know whom they can speak with if they have a problem they would like addressed. Your input and support are very important to us. Board members handed out ballots and counted the votes once the voting was closed. Carol Chruz won the open seat on the Advisory Board. Her first meeting will start January 25, We had 3 wonderful nominees for the position. Thanks to Andrea Faulk and Patricia Murray for their interest. Congratulations Carol. Many seniors offered questions for discussion but they were more anxious to vote than speak. We did have a short discussion to cover the questions asked. Nina spoke about some of the new classes that are being offered. The new center will probably be ready by summer of We spoke about building up the afternoon classes so that the center does not lose its Innovative title. Transportation will be provided for those who choose to stay and learn something new after lunch. Mary spoke about her love for the center and we all agreed that it is like a second home. We should all be open about our feelings and encourage each other to join more of the activities offered. We also spoke about volunteering. As we know, it comes from the heart and that is the way it should be. Please and thank you also go a long way but the older we get the more we forget those words. Smiles don t hurt either. As we move into the holiday season, the craft and quilting class will have a sale. We will post signs once the date is finalized. Please help support SNAP and the crafting groups by purchasing hand made items for your families this year. Thank you. Carole Vahey, President
