Reservations needed Wine Society Members only $15++ Per Person WINE 101 M & Ms In honor of the month of M&Ms, I will be writing about two wines that start with M. The first, Malbec, hands down one of my top five favorite varietals, is predominantly found in Argentina but also found in Cahors, France, and is scattered in other wine regions throughout the world. Argentina is one of the only places that the grape is bottled completely by itself, as it is used primarily as a blending grape elsewhere. It has found a natural home in the Andes. It grows at altitudes of up to 4900 feet and is exposed to an average of 320 days of sun per year. A unique trait is that it grows larger than normal leaves on the vines to protect itself from the hot sun, producing a grape that is small, dark and rich with bold and exciting flavors. I currently have two on the list and will be adding more. Look for the Henrique Foster collection. The second, Mouvedere, was cultivated in Spain and goes by the name of Mataro or Monastrell. It is also found in the Provence region of France. It s primarily used as a blending grape, but there are a handful of 100% Mouvederes on the market. It is the main body of many versions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is also used in Australia s GSM blend, Grenache Shiraz and Mouvedere (one of my favorites). Much like Malbec, it is a dark, rich, complex grape that gives any wine a good punch of flavor. Here on the list I have Kaesler GSM. Give it a try next time you re in, it will be your new favorite wine. Cheers, Andy Smith Director of Dining / Sommelier Serenata Wine Society Chairman ext 237 asmith@serenataclub.com
