16 Crafting Luxury Dairy Ice Cream for over 100 Years S.Luca of Musselburgh is a family run business and we have been crafting ice cream since It all began in the late 1800s when Mr Luca Scappaticcio and his wife Anastasia arrived from Cassino, in Italy. Luca found an apprenticeship in the North British Hotel (now known as the Balmoral Hotel) on Princes Street and was taught by a Swiss sous chef how to make ice cream. Luca took what he had learned and he and his wife set up an ice cream parlour in Musselburgh. They dropped the name Scappaticcio in favour of Luca for simplicity as it was much easier to pronounce and S.Luca was born! Although there have been many changes to S. Luca of Musselburgh over the last one hundred years, we are still very family orientated and several of the third generation continue to take the company into the 21st Century
