2 2 Trivia Whiz Save the Date Spring Is Here! Please remember to be courteous of your neighbors! Please do not place bird feeders on your balcony. It is OK to use hummingbird feeders and oriole feeders. Please place a tray under your plants so that you don t rain on your neighbor below! Recognizing Our Heroes May marks National Military Appreciation Month, and the last Monday of the month is Memorial Day. Here are some ways to honor the sacrifice of those who have served as well as those who are still serving. Wear an American flag pin or a red, white and blue ribbon throughout the month of May. Gather a group of friends and visit a veterans hospital to chat with residents and play cards. Cut coupons to send to military bases overseas, where coupons can be used for up to six months past their expiration date. Visit area monuments and memorials that honor military heroes. Recite the Pledge of Allegiance every morning or before club and special interest meetings. Are you a veteran or a veteran s spouse? Record your experiences in a journal or via video to share with younger generations. Visit cemeteries on Memorial Day and place flags and flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. Hang a flag on your door or in your window. On Memorial Day, pause at 3 p.m. to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance. MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION! On Wednesday, May 25th, at noon, residents of Lloyd s Bayou are invited to a cookout/ backyard party on the first floor. There will be fun, food and prizes! Wear your favorite red, white and blue outfit!

Make every day of your life, and every candle, count. Have a wonderful birthday! Discover the Art of Tangling Many people find drawing and other creative activities relaxing. But the Zentangle Method of drawing created by artists Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas in 2004 is meant to be a truly meditative experience. The method involves drawing tangles, which are simple patterns created by repeating basic shapes such as lines, dots, circles and ovals. The patterns are abstract instead of recognizable shapes like stars, hearts or flowers. Traditionally, a Zentangle drawing begins with a 3.5-inch square, although you can draw Zentangleinspired art on any size of paper. HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY is on its way! Using a pencil, lightly draw a border around the edge of your paper, followed by a string a random line or lines that overlap and create other shapes. These shapes are then used as spaces to draw tangles. Tangles should be drawn with black ink and on white paper to keep the process as right-brained as possible. Tangling the act of drawing tangles is not the same as doodling, which is often done as your mind wanders. Instead, the Zentangle Method requires the artist to focus on each stroke at a time, not worrying about what the final drawing will look like. The purpose of tangling is to empty the mind of concerns and concentrate on your breathing and the movement of the pen along the paper. As a bonus, a finished Zentangle square, called a tile, can stand alone as a beautiful, unique piece of art, or it can be arranged with other tiles.

6 7 Laugh Lines Mexican Food Favorites Whether throwing a fiesta or just having an everyday meal, many say Olé! to Mexican fare. Tempt your taste buds with some of these favorites. Salsa. The Aztecs are credited with mixing chopped tomatoes, chilies and other ingredients to create early versions of this sauce that is served as a condiment or with tortilla chips as an appetizer. Tacos. Consuming more than 4 billion a year, America is loco ( crazy ) for tacos! This crunchy or soft folded tortilla staple usually filled with meat, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes evolved from a variety of recipes brought to the U.S. by Mexican immigrants beginning in the early 20th century. Enchiladas. Translating to chili-filled, the rolled tortilla of an enchilada is traditionally stuffed with meat and cheese, then covered in a spicy red, green or cream sauce. Tamales. The tamale dates back as far as 7,000 B.C., and was created as a portable food that could be prepared ahead of time. These packets of savory or sweet fillings inside cornmeal dough are wrapped in corn husks or banana leaves before steaming. Chef Scott and Mary preparing Bayou Bombs! Lloyd s Bayou was invited to Spring Lake Grub and Brew Fest, held at Old Boys Brewery on April 9th. We had to prepare 500 appetizers that included bacon. We set up a booth with our American House theme. We were very pleased with the response to our Bayou Bombs! You might be able to coax the recipe from him... Good job, Chef Scott! Amusing Adages As the school year comes to an end, reflect on these wise words, created by grade schoolers who added their own twists to some popular proverbs: A journey of a thousand miles begins with... a private jet.
