4 ATTENTION PARENTS...We need your help! We have several students that come to the office on a daily basis complaining about head and stomach aches and just generally not feeling well. These students inform us that they have not had breakfast, because they didn t have time. Below is an article as a reminder of how important breakfast is and why it really is the most important meal of our day. Five Reasons Why it's Important to Eat Breakfast Each Day Have you ever heard anyone say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Well, if you have, know that they were right! Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. Here are five reasons why you should join the millions of people who eat breakfast each and every morning! Reason Number One... There is a brand new day ahead of you each morning. Eating breakfast can help you to have a great day. Our bodies cannot run on empty until lunch time. How many people eat a really healthy lunch? When our bodies do not have proper nutrition they do not function to their fullest. We will not feel good if we do not eat breakfast. No one wants to not feel good half the day. We are not as productive when we don't feel well. Reason Number Two... Our energy level. Breakfast gives our bodies nutrition and substance. This is where our energy comes from. People who do not eat breakfast have considerably less energy than people who do. Think about it. Breakfast is the meal after dinner. We eat dinner then sleep through the night. That's eight or more hours with out eating. Our bodies need to be nourished in the morning. They've gone without for hours. If we do not eat in the morning our bodies will not be able to produce the energy we need for the day. Reason Number Three... Concentration. People who do not eat breakfast often have a hard time concentrating. They also have difficulty learning because they are scatterbrained. People who do eat breakfast tend to be much more focused on the task at hand. They do not have trouble concentrating nearly as much as those who do not eat breakfast. We think a lot each day. This is really something to think about! Reason Number Four... Your mood. Did you know that hunger can cause mood swings and irritability. So can running on empty. Your body is lacking something. This affects your whole system. People who do eat breakfast tend to be much less irritable than those who do not. They tend to be in a better mood. No one around you wants you to be irritable. No one likes it when people mood swing. DO yourself and those around you a favor each day, eat breakfast :) Reason Number Five... Breakfast is at the very beginning of the day. Families can sit down and enjoy this meal together, grasping a little bit of quality time each morning. See, breakfast can help you to have a great day in more ways than one! What better way to start your day!

5 4th Graders and UNICEF Every year since the early 1980 s, our Barnard students have been collecting money in the Trick or Treat for UNICEF campaign. Our fourth graders carry the orange boxes on Halloween night to get donations for this worthy children s charity. This follows an in-class unit focusing on the needs of children all around the world and the problems that some families face due to famine, war and disease. We are so proud of our students this year! Considering the horrible (and we mean weather we had, the kids did great! We had a goal of $1000 and we exceeded that to $ We are very proud of our students for thinking of these children and making the effort to ask for assistance on their behalf. Thanks to the Barnard Community for your ongoing support. You are the best! ATTENTION PARENTS There is no better way to prepare a student to engage in learning and give good effort, than to make sure their basic needs are met. In a hectic life, we often lose sight of how important adequate sleep is. Does it change a student s IQ? Unlikely, but does it allow a student access the intellectual resources they have? Absolutely! Research on learning and memory also evidences that transmission of learned information into long-term retrieval occurs best during sleep. Our sleep deprived students who are not doing well could actually improve in the long run by rearranging their priorities and schedules. An established sleep schedule can be a very important starting point for all our students You can click on the link below and read an article about sleep and the impact it has on the quality of student life and learning. While we consider study habits and organizational skills as crucial to the learning process, we need to look at other things, too.

7 It s almost the most wonderful time of the year that s right the Barnard Barnes & Noble Book Fair is coming up quickly! Join us on Friday, December 5th a night full of fun with your Barnard family. This is a tradition that many have grown to love, and that new families come to enjoy. This is a great opportunity to get some shopping done for the holidays, while also helping to support your school. Barnard gets a portion of all sales, and you get access to some great gift ideas. It s not all about the shopping for a night of fun is planned too that the whole family will enjoy! There are some fun activities planned for the kids including a hunt, mystery readers, and an amazing performance by the Jammin Jays. You also get the opportunity to see other families from Barnard and be part of one of our favorite events. If you can t make it, you can still use our special code to get in on some great holiday shopping and support our school in the process. This is a great opportunity to be part of a fundraiser that helps you to cross names off your shopping list so don t miss out on all the fun and support our great school! Holiday Shop The Holiday Shop is coming on December 9th and 10th!! Students love this fun opportunity to shop independently and buy Holiday gifts for their families, teachers and friends!! The envelope will indicate which day your child is shopping. Purchases will be sent home with your child the same day. Scrip Orders Scrip refers to gift certificates or gift cards. Our school is able to purchase gift cards from hundreds of retailers nationwide at a discount, which you can then buy at face value. These are the same gift cards that you would purchase if you went to the retailer directly. By purchasing these gift cards before you shop for your everyday items - like groceries, gas, clothes, restaurants we raise money, without you having to spend a penny extra. WHAT WE VE BEEN UP TO We have been practicing our 5 fitness tests in all grades since the beginning of the school year. All students are in the process of taking their fitness test. We are also finishing up our soccer unit and starting basketball. Students in grades 2-5 were either introduced to the foot dribbling skill or reviewing the skill. We have been discussing the importance of flexibility and how we all want to be flexible like a rubber band! J The Flexed-Arm Hang 3rd Graders working on the Sit-N-Reach Sleep For a Better You! Did you know that physical activity can have a positive effect on how well you sleep? In one study, almost 50 percent of people who engaged in regular exercise reported improved sleep. Sleep can also contribute to body composition. A study from the University of Michigan found that a person who sleeps one extra hour can burn 147 calories more per day than someone who spends that extra hour watching television or playing videogames. Food For Thought: Make Healthy Eating Choices Make ½ your plate fruits & vegetables. Eat whole grain cereals and breads. Limit sweets and salt. Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Eat protein with each meal. Drink fat-free and low-fat milk.
