In store for us this May: Mother s Day memories on the 6th. Tea for two, or three or four, or more, poems, stories and art activities to honor the moms we had, and the moms some of us are. Flowers, fun and fine dining, so mind your manners, like your momma said! Wednesday May 18th finds us doing the salsa dance in Latin America, from Mexico to Brazil to Peru and all and in between. Ole! The air is filled with the lively music of Michael and Paul. 2 Adult Day Services Our Memorial Day event on Friday the 27th will focus on our fallen heroes, military history and how to be strong in the wake of our country s support of democracy worldwide. The weekly veterans meeting includes a special ceremony in the morning. Salute!

Members enjoy a variety of planned activities, including: Day trips throughout western North Carolina A nutritious lunch (picnicking in warm weather) Volunteer work (Manna Food Bank) Stretching, fitness exercises, board games and crafts. We played with a puppy there, and Bill got bit. How can someone get hurt when we go for ice cream?? And Ted answered Well, it might be time to scream. (note, Bill s sister Sybil was there too, and assures me that Bill didn t really get bit, we re just using poetic license, our imaginations fueled by a really good treat!) He walked over, sat on his walker seat in front of me and we began to chat. Then he told me to take off my glasses that they were crooked. A little surprised at this request I was happy to oblige as I was curious to see why. Mel explained that he was an Optometrist and took pride in helping Mel Soles people see better. Mel is a kind soft spoken gentleman and it is a delight to have him in our program. After earning his Doctorate in Optometry, Mel joined the army where he served for 28 years and rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel. Mel and his wife, Martha, raised three children, two daughters (the eldest, now deceased) and a son. The family has great memories of living in Germany and camping in the forest. The Soles recently attended a Givens Estate affair, Spring Fling, where they enjoyed a three-piece band, wine and hors d oeuvres. Music brings back our memories and Mel s wife recalled that while a high school student, Mel sang in a double-quartet, placing high in state competitions. On right: Last month s Literary Celebration gave us the opportunity to combine the written word with the visual arts. We explored Michael Crichton s Jurassic Park, Charles Dickens The Adventures of Oliver Twist, Herman Melville s Moby Dick and more great works.
