1 1 The National Recreation and Association (NRPA) in partnership with the Kansas Health Foundation (KHF) has awarded the community of Parsons funds to enhance our summer food program while offering fun health education opportunities and community gardening projects. NRPA s Serving Communities 2012 grants are to help increase the number of children receiving healthy meals and nutritional education during the out-of- school times. Parsons District Schools has for several years sponsored a summer food program at many of our schools. This year we are joining with the Parsons Recreation Commission (PRC), Rector Center at, and the Church Women United (CWU) Bookmobile Program to offer a Summer Food and Fun Program in Parsons. Breakfast meals will be available at the Parsons Middle School, Arvon Phillips Center, Rector Center and the Garden. Lunches will be served at the Parsons Middle School,, Glenwood and Lincoln School. Alternate sites have been established for inclement weather. Health education activities will be available at several of these sites during each week. We are thrilled to have the program (OWG) for use over the summer. The OWG uses the nutrition education intervention models used in the Healthier Options for Public Schoolchildren (HOPS) Study and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF)-funded Delta HOPE Tri-State Healthy Options for People through Extension (HOPE) Initiative. The program integrates an evidence-based set of interventions including nutrition and healthy lifestyle educational curriculum focusing on core principals of healthy living and eating. Topics will focus on fruits and vegetables and gardening through the eight-week series. The Rector Center at will be offering a gardening program on their campus each morning. Children will have another opportunity to participate in a garden project at the Garden and the CWU Bookmobile will visit many of the s each week. Through the generosity of the NRPA and the Kansas Health Foundation children will have the opportunity to win passes for admission to the PRC pool, (dollar movies) and the PRC Friday in the events. These passes are valued at over $6,000 providing Parson s youth the opportunity to swim with their friends and family! They can enjoy a movie or attend the famous Friday in the events. The PRC has extended these Friday events from five Fridays to eight this summer. A detailed schedule of events and meal times are included with this booklet. Our summer meal program is made possible through the United States Department of Agriculture. Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does the need for good nutrition. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to help children in lowincome areas get the nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow throughout the summer months when they are out of school. Any child 18 years of age or younger may eat at no charge at the s. Children must eat the food on site. Adults choosing to eat with the children will be charged $2.00 for breakfast and $3.50 for lunch. Correct change will be appreciated. Adults are not permitted to eat any portion of the child s meal. USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
