11 To schedule summer lessons with Head Pro, Kathy Vick or Hillary, contact the pro shop at This month's topic deals with "keys to competing better" by Steve Cobb of USTA Texas Section. -Prepare for all situations in advance - eliminate potential concentration stealers. Organize drinks, towels, hats, over grips, sunblock, etc. in advance. Know the location of the sun, wind speed and direction, etc. as well. -Save your energy for the things you can control. Outbursts, arguing line calls, throwing rackets, etc. is a waste of vital energy. Walk the walk of the confident warrior between points and on changeovers. -Scout. What do you or others see or know about your opponent? Note strengths, weaknesses, favorite patterns, serve location, etc. -Communicate if you are playing doubles during points (on balls up the middle where either could take it) and between points (for strategy purposes). -Have a game plan and stick to it. For ex, serve into the body on big points or attack all second serves to the opponent s backhand. However, have back up plans too. If things did not work out well in the first set, change it up in the second one. -Slow down your breathing between serves and between points. Too many plays rush to the next point in particular. You have 25 seconds between points, so use them. -Hydrate. If you are 2% dehydrated, the point at which you thirst, your muscles are already negatively affected. -Play in the here and now. Do not dwell on the past or worry about the future. Just take it one point at a time.
