With outstanding entertainment, informative talks, an exceptional buffet and wonderful friends, everyone had a memorable time. The 2014 Congrès Mondial Acadien will be in Madawaska, Maine. Congrès activities and reunions will be in southwestern Québec, northwestern New Brunswick and the Madawaska, ME area. We are already beginning plans for a Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion there. Last week Louisiane Acadie, the organization that developed Louisiana s bid for the 2014 Congrés Mondial Acadien, announced that there will be a major international Acadian festival in southern Louisiana in October The State of Louisiana has already committed funds for this event. Planning has begun and folks from throughout the United States, Canada and Europe will attend. Although the format is not known at this time, family reunions will be a major event of the festival and Les Guédry d Asteur plans to have a Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion at the Acadian festival. October is a wonderful time to visit Louisiana with cool temperatures and dry weather. This Acadian festival will not replace nor compete with the Congrés Mondial Acadien. It will be an additional opportunity for Acadians from throughout the world to gather, celebrate our heritage, renew acquaintances and meet our cousins. So mark your calendars for October 2011 with Laissez les bon temps roulez en Louisiane. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE GUEDRY- LABINE & PETITPAS REUNION By Marty Guidry Attended by 73 cousins, the 2009 Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion provided exciting entertainment, great food and wonderful fellowship to all. Our Bathurst, New Brunswick hosts, Lorn Guidry and his son Jason, not only were instrumental in organizing the Reunion, but also welcomed us in grand style to New Brunswick. As we all gathered at 8:30 am in Holy Family Catholic Church in Bathurst, Pierrette Guidry of Colorado led the French Rosary a moving and unique experience. Father Benoit Drapeau, originally from Bathurst and now residing in Arizona, led the opening procession behind the banners of our forefathers Claude Guédry/Marguerite Petitpas and each of their children. Father Drapeau celebrated a moving bilingual Mass to open the reunion. A. J. LeBlanc, Claudette Mancini and Albert Geddry read the scriptural verses and Pierrette Guidry sang a beautiful rendition of Ave Maria during communion. As the Guédry banners led the closing processional, everyone sang Ave Maris Stella the Acadian National Anthem to end the Mass. We all appreciate the outstanding efforts of Jeanette Guidry Leger in helping organize our beautiful opening Mass.

2 GENERATIONS Volume 7, Issue 4 Page 2 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE GUEDRY-LABINE & PETITPAS REUNION-by Marty Guidry After Mass everyone drove the five miles to Danny s Inn in Beresford for remainder of the Reunion. On arriving, we were greeted by magician John Guidry, brother of Lorn. John roamed the room, baffling one person after another with his amazing feats of hand. I am still trying to discern how he poured water into his cupped hand, opened it to show it dry and then re-cupped it to return the water to the glass. Shortly after we arrived at Danny s Inn, Lorn Guidry greeted each of the ladies with a special Bathurst seaglass pendant necklace that he crafted. Lorn and his wife Debbie have collected seaglass from the Bathurst beaches for several years and craft the beautiful pendants at their home. Thanks, Lorn, for this treasured gift to each of our ladies. After Marty Guidry made brief introductory remarks welcoming everyone to Bathurst, Larry Miller and his Cajun Band from Iota, LA struck up a lively Cajun two-step. Feet were moving and hands clapping as we all enjoyed the music. Between songs, Larry discussed the origins of Cajun music, the similarities and differences of Louisiana Cajun and Acadian music of New Brunswick and the Louisiana Cajun culture. Later Larry and his lovely wife demonstrated the Cajun two-step and Cajun waltz. The surprise for many was when they invited several of us to dance with them. We soon had several couples on the dance floor. The excitement of the morning climaxed when the band struck up the traditional Cajun Mardi Gras song and six of our Guédry and Petitpas cousins came dancing into the room in traditional Courir de Mardi Gras costumes. With Larry Miller calling, they put on a lively Cajun Mardi Gras dance teasing audience members, dancing with them and putting on a great show. Throughout the morning we had several breaks so we could meet each other, visit the various exhibits on our family and purchase souvenirs. As the noon hour approached, we all gathered for a tasty buffet lunch that included roast beef in peppercorn gravy, sweet & sour meatballs, lasagna, chicken wings, potato casserole, coleslaw, tossed green salad, carrot salad, rolls and several desserts including cheesecake and carrot cake. Magician John was busy throughout lunch entertaining us all with his quick hands and devilish tricks. The decibel level throughout the room was high as folks discussed their families, their journeys to the reunion and their home areas. Between conversations, folks purchased special gifts of t-shirts, caps, pens, key chains, lapel pins and magnets all personalized with our Les Guédry d Asteur logo. Thanks to Rachel Hardee, Jeff Killingsworth and Allie Guidry for manning our sales table and registration booth. As the afternoon began, Sister Corinne LaPlant of New Brunswick discussed the history of the Acadians of the Baie-des-Chaleurs region. Her discussion of Nicolas Denys and his brief venture in the Bathurst area and the origins and lives of the Acadians of Caraquet & Acadian Peninsula was quite interesting. Eileen Avery of California then presented the results of research into her Petitpas family. In a very interesting and informative talk, Eileen discussed recent discoveries that she has made through mtdna tests. In the second half of her discussion, she presented a brief genealogy of the Petitpas family. With the day winding down, the New Brunswick Acadian band, with Roger Lanteigne on accordion, played a lively set of Acadian and country music that had everyone toe-tapping, singing and clapping their hands. As the strains of the last tune reverberated in the room, folks made a last dash to the sales table and enjoyed the various family exhibits. It was truly a memorable day for all of the Guedry, Labine and Petitpas cousins in New Brunswick. Many new friends were made and old friendships renewed. On Monday, August 17 th many of us ventured over to the town of Pokemouche for the Espace 2009 activities. Marty Guidry was one of the featured speakers, giving a short talk on the birds of Louisiana. Larry Miller again entertained the large crowds that gathered on the 18th for the Louisiana Day festivities which featured Cajun food & entertainment from Louisiana.

10 GENERATIONS Volume 7, Issue 4 Page 10 BON APPETIT-Recipes from the Guédry-Labine Cookbook 1 lb. fresh or frozen lima beans /2 ounce can stewed tomatoes or 4 fresh tomatoes peeled and diced 1 large onion diced 1 tbsp. olive oil BABY LIMA BEANS AND TOMATO Mary Guidry Dupont-Houma, LA In medium size pot sauté onion in olive oil, on low fire, until soft, not brown. Add tomatoes and sauté for 10 minutes or so. Add lima beans and cook until beans are done; this may take up to 1 hour or longer. Pickled pork or salt pork may be added, cut in small pieces and add to onions. EGGPLANT FRITTERS Jack Guidry, Lafayette, LA I used to live for eggplant season when my mom would fix a batch of these golden brown lip-smackers. - Jack Guidry 1 large eggplant 1 tsp. salt 3/4 cup sugar 1 egg, slightly beaten 2 tbsp. vanilla extract 1 tbsp. baking powder 2 cups flour (can vary) Water to cook eggplant Peel and cube eggplant into 1 chunks. Put eggplant & salt in enough water to cover them into a large pot over medium high heat and cook until chunks are soft & dark green. Remove from heat & drain away liquid. Transfer eggplant into a bowl, add sugar, then let cool for about 15 minutes. Add the egg, mix well. Add vanilla, mix well. Sift in flour & baking powder & mix well. (The exact amount of flour may vary due to the fact that all eggplants are not created in equal size). The difficult part of this recipe is getting the consistency of the batter correct. It shouldn t be so thin as to run off the spoon, nor so dry that it won t come off at all. Using your fingers to remove the batter from the spoon is ok. Heat about 1 of oil in a deep frying pan to 350 degrees. Using a tablespoon, drop the batter, one spoonful at a time, into hot oil (they swell up). Fry each glob of batter until golden brown on both sides. You can flatten them a little with your spoon. Remove them when done and sprinkle a little sugar on them. These are best served hot!

11 GENERATIONS Volume 7, Issue 4 Page 11 BOOK NOOK A Travel in Time to Grand Pré - by Michele Doucette A Travel in Time to Grand Pré is an historically informative adventure, tying the history of the descendants of Yeshua to modern day Nova Scotia, Canada. Madeleine Sinclair feels disconnected with the era of her birth. Transported back to 1754, she comes to learn, live and experience firsthand the lives of the French Acadian people, meeting Michel (dit Sophie) LeBlanc. Through the warm, loving and helpful guidance of fellow time traveler, Madame Pêche, she comes to understand the predetermined course of her Sinclair bloodline, beginning with Rollo the Viking, father of William Longsword, a line that is shown to be linked to the Merovingians, the Cathars and the Knights Templar (protectors of the Holy Grail). Before long, the reader is led to the very apex of this time travel adventure. Madeleine has been decreed the one who is to introduce the words of Yeshua, spoken in Aramaic at the height of his ministry, to the modern world. Herein, Yeshua explains how individuals can find their way, their truth(s), so as to live their lives to the fullest. Postcards from Acadia-by Barbara LeBlanc Postcards from Acadie explores the cultural and symbolic resonance of Grand-Pré, Nova Scotia, Canada. Settled in the 1680s, Grand-Pré was one of the sites for the Acadian Deportation in From the settlement and deportation of the early Acadians, to the mass marketing of the Dominion Atlantic Railway and the federal reshaping as a National Historic Site, Grand-Pré has served as a historical clue, a focal point, a catharsis, a catalyst and a motivator, both for Acadians and for others. Excavating the political and cultural symbols that have shaped Grand-Pré, Barbara LeBlanc explores the ways in which we negotiate personal and group identity. In Acadian endeavors to direct and control a sense of identity in a changing world, Grand-Pré plays a significant role by serving as a place of heritage commemoration and celebration of past, present and future.
