1 ^^^ T TECHNOLOGY c *~ LJ M r\ r\i v ^s LOCAL HEALTH AUTHORITY ANALYTICAL COMMITTEE FOOD COLOUR SURVEY APRIL 20 Background The rd co-ordinated sampling project for the LHAAC in 200/ was an analysis of colourings in food. This analysis was aimed at identifying whether food products contained artificial colourings and, if so, attempted to identify what colourings were present. Some of the food products received came with declared nutritional information. Where this information was available, the declared information was compared to the analysed results. Consignment Details At the end of the survey, food/drink samples had been submitted by 22 participating municipalities. The breakdown of the number of samples submitted by each Local Council is presented in Appendix. Appendix 2 lists all of the individual products received along with their test results. Testing Methodology All samples were analysed using paper chromatography techniques to identify the artificial colours present (if any). The results of the analysis show that there were several products that contained artificial colourings which were not declared by the manufacturer.
