1 American House Southfield Lahser Road Southfield Michigan (248) americanhouse.com July 2017 Welc me Your Friendly American House Staff Belinda Smith Landon Carter Alexandra Allie Jenna Shelby John Williams Reginald Glaspie Shantel Pierce Senior Executive Director Assistant Director Building 2 Executive Director Life Enrichment Director Culinary Supervisor Maintenance Director Housekeeping Supervisor Welcome to American House Southfield Welcome to American House. Our community is dedicated to making sure you feel at home. We have had several residents move in this month, and we would like to extend a warm welcome to those who are new to our community. July is Great Outdoors Month and the perfect time to go for a stroll or sit in the sunshine. Happy Summer! Happy Fourth of July! This month, we celebrate our nation s birthday. With the signing of the Declaration of Independence, our forefathers began a series of events that resulted in the freedom and prosperity we treasure today. Our office will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, Fireworks are NOT permitted on the property. Please join us for a BBQ on Tuesday, July 4, 2016, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Meal tickets are available in the main office for $12. Have a happy Independence Day!
2 2 Welc me New Residents We Welcome: Geneva M. Noanie & Phyllis P. Please join us on Friday, July 7, 2017, at 3 pm in the Dining room for our monthly meet and mingle, so we can welcome our new residents! Enjoy music and light refreshments! We encourage ALL new residents to attend this special gathering so that we can introduce you to the community. Did you know that you don t have to be a great singer to join, you just have to enjoy singing? If you are interested in joining the choir, please sign up in the Activity Book located in the Main Lobby of Building 1. The choir is the voice of American House. We are happy to announce we have 3 new residents join the choir: Audrey W. Winne T. Thelma S. Future Choir rehearsals and performances to be announced soon. Life Enrichment As the heat of summer we have waited all year for finally arrives, we prepare to celebrate the birthday of our nation. This year, we are holding a massive post U.S.A. Birthday Bash on Friday, July 7, We also have our July 4th barbecue! New this month, be sure to join us at our monthly Meet and Mingle activity, which is focused on getting to know your neighbors, especially the new ones! This event is held during Happy Hour; please check our calendar details. Enjoy the sun while it lasts! Life Enrichment Director Jenna Shelby Maintenance Corner Hi everyone and happy summer. Just a few quick things from us at the Maintenance Department to help make this summer even better. Firstly, we ask that you help us keep this American House in beautiful shape by putting your trash in the garbage and not leave it out on tables or on the floor. Further, please make sure to put your floor mats inside your house, they are a tripping hazard when left outside the door. Thank you. Maintenance Director Reginald Glaspie Director s Corner Greetings, Finally summer is in full bloom, and as we enjoy the sweet taste of lemonade, let s also take a moment to be thankful for the even sweeter taste of freedom. With this Fourth of July, I wish you all the best, and hope that you will take a moment to reflect on the freedoms that we have, as well as the many who sacrificed to obtain and keep them. I would like to remind everyone of our American House incentive program just for you. Enjoying the heat? Don t feel like cooking? Then consider this: I am happy to announce a new monthly contest: this month we kick it off with the first twelve residents who turn in their rent check the first day of the month will receive a spot at the Chef s table. What is the Chef s Table? It is a private dinner hosted by one of our American House Chefs with a scrumptious sizzling meal to order. All other rent checks received between July second and July fifth will be entered into a raffle to win a prize. So hurry on down, the game is afoot! Senior Executive Director Belinda Smith

5 6 Wild World: Bald Eagle These majestic birds can be found throughout most of North America but are most abundant in Alaska and Canada. The bald part of their name is inspired by the white feathers on their head; their tail feathers are also white, while the rest of their body is brown. Female eagles are slightly larger than males, with a wingspan of about 7 feet. Bald eagles live around bodies of water, with fish making up the majority of their diet. The nest of a bald eagle pair, which can weigh as much as a ton and measure up to 8 feet across, is among the largest of the world s birds. The bald eagle has been the national emblem of the U.S. since Famous Faces Born in July July 2, 1947: Larry David July 3, 1980: Olivia Munn July 4, 1924: Eva Marie Saint July 12, 1951: Cheryl Ladd July 17, 1976: Luke Bryan July 22, 2013: Prince George July 28, 1990: Soulja Boy July 31, 1965: J.K. Rowling July Celebrations Is there any month that says summer more than July? The seventh month of the year is: National Blueberry Month, Grilling Month, Ice Cream Month, Hot Dog Month, Watermelon Month, Park and Recreation Month, and Vacation Rental Month. Good-for-You Grilling Take advantage of grilled meat, poultry and vegetables on summer menus. The grilling process allows both meat and produce to retain more of their vitamins, minerals and nutrients than other cooking methods. Easy Way to Cut Calories Cut your calorie intake by filling up on fresh fruit. Check out a local farmers market to discover what s in season. Interesting Ice Cream Facts The first ice cream parlor in America opened in New York City. Vanilla ice cream is consumed more than any other flavor. Sunday is the No. 1 day that ice cream is purchased. About 50 licks are needed to eat a single scoop of ice cream. On average, each person in America eats 23.2 quarts of ice cream annually. The No. 1 ice cream topping is chocolate syrup. Ice cream is an $11 billion industry in the U.S. The U.S. is the No. 1 country for ice cream consumption. The No. 1 ingredient in ice cream is air; without this ingredient, ice cream would be too hard to scoop and eat. Green tea ice cream is very popular in Japan. Here is a recipe for a basic vanilla ice cream: Ingredients: 1 (8 oz.) container frozen whipped topping 1 (12 oz.) can evaporated milk 1/2 can (7 oz.) sweetened condensed milk 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract Directions: Mix all of the ingredients together, pour into a sealable container, freeze for 24 hours and enjoy! Visit an American House today and enjoy some cool and refreshing ice cream during National Ice Cream Month. Volunteer Corner A huge thanks to our volunteers who have been so wonderful to go above and beyond several times throughout the month. Thank you; we couldn t do it without you! George S. Jackie M.
