2 An Invitation to Attend Dear CSFA members and friends, the 60 th Canadian Snack Food Association Conference will take place at the Château Frontenac in Québec City, Québec from Thursday, October 13 th to Sunday, October 16 th, As always, the Snack Food Industry is growing and changing rapidly. Our theme, Clarity within the Snack Industry, is intended to provide that transparency and guidance during this constant transformation. The 2016 Conference Committee has created an extraordinary program providing ample networking opportunities and industry-related sessions. As in the past, our speakers promise to be informative and educational. The event will begin on Thursday evening at 7:00 with the Welcome Reception followed by Dinner and Eric Michaud, Storyteller and King of Liars! On Friday, we will commence the session by welcoming Carman Allison from Nielsen talk about 2020 Vision: Best Bets for Growth and Canadian Retail moving forward. This presentation will demonstrate the constant change taking place in our business environment and provide a fresh outlook towards the future. Following will be Dr. William Yan, Director, Bureau of Nutritional Sciences, Food Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch, Health Canada. Dr. Yan will be providing an update on key initiatives including amendments to nutrition labelling regulations, management of supplemented foods and Ministerial mandate commitments regarding sodium, trans fat, added sugars & food colours. After which, we will be receiving updates on issues affecting the snack industry in Europe and in the United States by welcoming Sebastian Emig from the European Snacks Association and Tom Dempsey from SNAC International. We will next hear from Joslyn Higgins of Food and Consumer Products Canada and Martin Hahn of Hogan Lovells US LLP who will be joining us to provide insights on the Regulatory Issues and Legal Environment affecting Canada and the United States. The session will finish, with them joining a Panel moderated by Derek Nighbor, discussing the trends, common issues and differences affecting each of their countries. The afternoon will include a Discovery tour of the Île d Orléans finishing with a traditional dinner and entertainment at the Sugar Shack Le Relais des Pins. On Saturday, we are pleased to begin the day with McCormick representatives, who will once again share their expertise and amaze us with their 2016 Flavour Forecast results. Followed by our keynote speaker Michael Pinball Clemons, Canadian Sports Hall-of-Famer / Toronto Argonauts Vice-Chairman where, with boundless energy, he will talk on the potential for each of us to achieve anything we set our minds to. You will have a free afternoon to secure the sights and in preparation for the President s Dinner, a Black Tie Optional Event, which will capture your imagination and remind you of long standing traditions surrounded by colleagues and friends. The Committee has secured a preferential room rate at the Château Frontenac of $395 + applicable taxes and all reservations are to be done directly with the Association. Canada s dynamic retail landscape has challenged many manufacturers and retailers, forcing them to re-examine and reinforce their value proposition. Over the next 5 years, value will continue to be a key consumer motivator, but we need to look for new ways to connect with consumers to get beyond just price. We will explore 4 emerging consumer and retail trends and the effect on the consumer package goods business before this decade is out. 10:00am 10:10am Stretch Break 10:15am 11:45am Health Canada Food Directorate Update Dr. William Yan, Director, Bureau of Nutritional Sciences, Food Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch, Health Canada In support of Health Canada s mission to help Canadians maintain and improve their health, the Food Directorate is the federal health authority responsible for establishing policies, setting standards and providing advice and information on the safety and nutritional value of food. The Bureau of Nutritional Sciences (BNS) is a specialized scientific bureau of the Food Directorate responsible for nutrition-related policies, standards, advice and information and its responsibilities flow from the nutrition-related provisions of the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations.BNS works closely with other Federal and Provincial government partners, non-government health and educational organizations, the food industry and consumers on a variety of nutrition issues. Martin will review the initiatives of greatest impact to the snack food industry. Challenges and Opportunities for Food Manufacturers Joslyn Higginson, Vice President, Public & Regulatory Affairs, Food & Consumer Products of Canada Ms. Higginson will discuss the Scientific & Regulatory, Trade and Environmental issues affecting the Canadian Market. ESA and SNAC International Report Sebastian Emig, Director General, European Snacks Association; Tom Dempsey, Chief Executive Officer, SNAC International Attendees will receive an informative update on the snack food industry in the European Union and the United States, discussing the issues, trends and concerns affecting their respective markets. 2:15pm 3:15pm Regulatory and Business Environment Panel Join Derek Nighbor as Moderator of this Panel including Tom Dempsey, Sebastian Emig, Martin Hahn and Joslyn Higginson discussing the trends, common issues and differences affecting each of their countries. With boundless energy, Pinball s talks centre on the potential for each of us to achieve anything we set our minds to. Unabashedly emotional and impactful, he shows audiences how to put heart in everything they do. Pinball joined the National Football League in 1987, and the Toronto Argonauts (and the CFL) in He was nicknamed Pinball because of his running style: his diminutive size and extraordinary balance allowed him to bounce between defensive players, drawing comparisons to a pinball machine. In 1990, he was honoured with the CFL s most outstanding player award, after setting the single-season record for all-purpose yards. He played his last game as an Argonaut in 2000, before becoming head coach of the team.
