1 94 th MAUI FAIR The Homegrown Fair October 6-9, 2016 HORTICULTURE SECTION INFORMATION Place: Dates: REGISTRATION OF ENTRIES War Memorial Gym, Wailuku Wednesday, October 5, 2016, 4:00 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2016, 7:00 9:30 a.m. The Horticulture Section of the Maui Fair provides a spectacular display of the produce and flowers grown in Maui County by our residents, kids and adults alike. Everyone is invited to submit entries of their favorite home grown vegetables, fruits, nuts and flowers. Awards are given to individuals for outstanding entries in the Junior and Senior Divisions, and in the Junior Division schools are eligible for cash awards and a perpetual trophy for the school with the highest student participation. 2 AWARDS CEREMONY Place: War Memorial Gym, Wailuku Dates: October 9, 2016 Time: 7:00 p.m. Award Pickup Junior Division awards can be picked up by School Representatives only (designated by the Principal) on Sunday October 9th from 7:00 pm to 7:15p.m. Senior Division awards can be picked up by the entrant at the same time. Awards not claimed on Sunday evening will be held for pickup until November 1 st. Contact Warren Watanabe at to arrange for pickup at the HC&S main office next to the Puunene Post Office. AWARDS Cash awards and Ribbons for winning entries in both Junior and Senior Divisions include: First Place, blue ribbon $5 and 5 points Second Place, red ribbon $3 and 3 points Third Place, white ribbon $2 and 2 points Best in Show, rosette $10 and 10 points The Best Junior Exhibit Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding entry by a junior; judging criteria are given below. The Grand Champion Trophy in the Junior Division is awarded to the junior with the highest point total from winning entries (see above) The Runner-Up Trophy in the Junior Division is awarded to the junior with the second highest point total from winning entries The School Participation Awards for the highest number of student entrants: First Place Perpetual Trophy and $250 Second Place $150 Third Place $100 The Best Senior Exhibit Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding entry by a senior; judging criteria are given below. The Grand Champion Trophy in the Senior Division is awarded to the senior with the highest point total from winning entries (see above). The Runner-Up Trophy in the Senior Division is awarded to the senior with the second highest point total from winning entries. NOTE: Recipients of top awards (Best Exhibit, Grand and Runner-Up Champions) must be present at Awards Ceremony to receive award. Forfeited awards are donated to the next fair. GENERAL INFORMATION ALL ENTRIES Eligibility Requirements: 2
3 Entries are open to residents of Maui County, and all entries must be produced by the exhibitor and grown in Maui County Types of Entries and Age Divisions: There are two sections of horticultural entries; 1) The Vegetable, Fruit and Nut Section, and 2) the Flower Section. Each section has a JUNIOR DIVISON, ages 5-18, and a SENIOR DIVISION, ages 19 and older. Entry Forms and Stubs Must Accompany All Entries (see example on page 4): * * * All entries must be submitted with a completed Entry Form, AND each entry item (for example, oranges) must be submitted with an Entry Stub. Entry Forms and Stubs are available from your school, the Fair Information Office trailer in the War Memorial parking lot. Judging for all entries will begin on Thursday October 6th at 10:00 am. Be sure to deliver entries during the times listed on the front page. Each entry must contain the proper number of items required for its category (see Minimum Quantity lists on pages 7-11). All entries become the property of the Maui Fair. Details, Details, Details: The decision of the judges is final. Spoiled or unsightly produce or flowers may be removed at the discretion of the committee. Exhibitors must not interfere with, or attempt to influence the judges officiating at the show. Authority to disqualify the exhibitors from obtaining any prize will be left to the discretion of the judges in the event this rule is violated. 3
4 All Entries Must Be Submitted with a FORM and a STUB: All junior and senior entries MUST be accompanied by a white ENTRY FORM that includes your name, address and phone number (see example below). For junior entries, include the name of your school. This entry form is a summary of all entry items by an individual. This form is used to record and summarize awards that are given by the judges, and entries will be invalid without a complete form. The ENTRY STUB is completed and submitted for each item submitted, for example, a papaya. It must be filled out as shown below. Junior entries use the pink stub ; Senior entries use the blue stubs The entry stub has a carbon copy under the top slip please do not separate them, as they are used for identification AND judging, and entries will be invalid without a complete stub. 4
5 VEGETABLE, FRUIT and NUT ENTRIES Most entries will be displayed on 6 or 9 plates, and the suggested minimum amounts are listed in the back pages. Providing sufficient amounts for a full display is meant to be attractive and provide fair comparisons for the judges. Each entrant is permitted two entries in each category unless different varieties are submitted. Judging of the entries in the Vegetable, Fruit and Nut Section will be based on the following: Perfection of the specimen Attractiveness 5
6 Uniformity of color and size Cleanliness Freedom from defects such as marks of disease and injury Marketable quality of the exhibited items Best in Show awards may be presented to participants in the following classes: VEGETABLES FRUITS & NUTS Chinese Cabbage Head Cabbage Avocado Head Cabbage Beans Banana Lettuce Romaine Citrus Romaine Dry Onion Persimmon Broccoli Bell Pepper Pineapple Tomato Pumpkin Nuts Sweet Corn Herbs Other Other 6
7 Each entry must be identified by variety. Each entrant may arrange their own entries in the standard containers, which will be provided by the Cut Flower Committee, otherwise, the Cut Flower Committee will display the flowers in the standard containers. Artificial treatment of flowers is prohibited (dyeing, waxing, etc.). In awarding prizes, judging will be governed by the following: Perfection of specimen Freedom from injuries and defects Cleanliness Attractiveness Trueness to type CUT FLOWER ENTRIES Best in Show awards may be given to both Senior and Junior Division entries.
