2 ROASTED ASPARAGUS: Preheat oven to 400º. On a large baking sheet, toss asparagus with olive oil and season generously with salt and pepper. Roast until tender and slightly charred, 25 minutes. SAUTÉED ASPARAGUS: In a large skillet over medium heat, heat a thin layer of olive oil. Add asparagus and cook until tender, 7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon. BLANCHED ASPARAGUS: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil then add chopped asparagus and cook until tender, 3 minutes. Immediately add to a large bowl of ice water and let cool. GRILLED ASPARAGUS: Heat grill (or grill pan) to medium-high. In a large bowl, toss asparagus lightly in oil, then season with salt and pepper. Grill until tender and charred on all sides, 3 to 4 minutes, turning occasionally. Rhubarb Tips: Rhubarb leaves are poisonous and should be thrown away not eaten. Firm stalks that snap with no blemishes or signs of bruising are best for cooking. How to bake rhubarb simply: Cut it into chunks. Scatter with sugar, cover with foil and bake in a medium oven for about 15 minutes until soft. Polaris have more upright growth. yields are generally lower than Highbush varieties but berry quality is very good. All these varieties have the wild flavor of their parents. The Half-Highs were bred for exceptional cold hardiness but are truly outstanding ornamental landscape plants wherever they are grown. All theses varieties have bright fall colors. 4 Northern Highbush are high chill varieties and the most widely planted blueberries, popular with home gardeners throughout the Northern U.S. and Southern Canada. There are more than 100 named varieties, out of which Schroeders has selected 6 of the best, allowing gardeners to select a combination that will produce delicious crops continuously over a 100- day period. These varieties display bush shapes from short and compact to tall and open. Fall foliage colors and unique winter wood tones complement gardens and home landscapes. The berries range in size from ¼" to over 1" in diameter, and in color from almost black to light powder blue. Northern Highbush requires a minimum of 800 chilling hours for proper fruit set. All cultivars are self-fertile but will produce better crops if more than one variety is planted. 10 Blackberries grow similar to raspberries, on tall upright canes. Their fruit is very high in antioxidants, dietary fibers and are low in calories. Plant where there is plenty of room to grow. Blackberry Thornless Varieties Zone 4-7 Summer Needs support Wine Orange Mostly thornless canes, large firm glossy berries, sweet flavor, excellent for jellies and jams. Deciduous soft pink flowers in second year to produce fruit. Lingonberries Because lingonberries are plentiful in the forested areas of the Swedish inland, they are widely collected for jam. Lingonberries are often served as jam, for instance with oven-made thick pancakes, or they may be served as a relish with meat courses such as meatballs, beef stew or liver dishes; regionally, they are even served with fried herring. The jam is also often used on mashed potatoes and the traditional oatmeal porridge, sometimes together with cinnamon, and, perhaps, a little sugar or syrup. Because of the benzoic acid, which is found in high amounts in lingonberries, the berries keep well without any sugar or other preservatives. Red Candy is sweeter and can be used in pies and other treats. Can eat right off the compact plant. North American native, lingonberries are grown as a low evergreen shrub that likes wet soil. Lingonberry Red Candy Zone 5 June Red but usually 10 h x-8 w add sugar Attractive easy to grow, with fruits on small, low growing shrubs. Plants are self-fertile but planting 2 or more will offer better fruit. Partial shade in acidic, well drained soil. Contact your local extension office for more information on pruning & care 10

12 Planting Blueberries: Sunny, weed free, well- drained soil that can be kept moist to improve production of fruit Raised beds or patio containers; acidic soil but no manure (use rhododendron or azalea fertilizer) Be sure the ground is 2.5 in diameter x 1 deep per plant add peat moss (1 bale 4 cu ft = 4 plants) Mulch 2 4 over the roots every other yr (water conservation, weed prevention) (don t use cedar or redwood) Pruning Blueberries Remove low growth around the base Remove the dead wood, leaving bright colored lateral branches (cut out short, discolored ones) Keep pruning until 1/3 to ½ of the wood is removed each year to promote annual growth! General Tips for Blueberries Carefully follow the fertilizer instructions as too much can burn the plant Apply fertilizer 1 time in early spring and one time in late spring then water thoroughly after each time Organic fertilizer recommendations: blood meal & cottonseed meal Blackberries / Raspberries (both have similar habits, but ask for help if unsure) All blackberries are perennial because the roots return yearly, but the top growth is biennial as the plant will grow vegetatively year one then fruits year two Plant in full sun, are self-fertile; need fertile soil with good drainage (add peat moss) Plant far away from wild blackberries to prevent the spread of wild blackberry viruses Plant only 1 deeper than the pot they were grown in and mulch 2 deep to help retain water & prevent weeds Berry plants need 1 of water/ week when growing & ripening (even more when extremely hot) General Tips for Blackberries / Raspberries Pick blackberries that are fully black, plump & firm, and remove without a tug (they won t mature off vine) Blackberries should be picked every couple of days as they ripen When picking in the cooler part of the day, keep the central plug within the fruit (unlike raspberries) Blackberries are highly perishable; refrigerate immediately (they only will last a few days Other Berry Notes Strawberries, Raspberries, and Blackberries are high in ellagic acid; the antioxidant that scavenges potential cancer-causing chemical inactive while reducing the genetic damage caused by carcinogens from air pollution and tobacco. Blackberries also contain other antioxidants that can help lower cholesterol and ward off cardiovascular disease. How to Freeze Raspberries This is super easy simply spread clean, firm berries on a cookie sheet and place in the freezer. Once frozen, the berries can be placed in a freezer container for later use. notes: Plant after frost threat is gone; rub off any shoots that start growing lower down the trunk & tie to trellis Inspect the vines for disease and insect problems April through October In Sept & Oct, as fruit ripens cover with netting to protect from bird damage In Sept & Oct, harvest the fruit based on color and flavor In Oct & Nov, clean up all fallen leaves, fruit, and debris (this prevents disease) 12
