The lac Tachardiella mexicana was first discovered in Buena Vista on Ebony Blackbead, and subsequently on other fabaceous hosts, primarily Acacia sp. During an inspection for ash whitefly at Buena Vista, a population of this lac was found on wax myrtle. This is a significant host jump onto an important member of Florida s native plant community. A survey to determine the extent of the infestation will be undertaken. (Dr. Ian C. Stocks.) This is a polyphagous species, and even though the host species was not verified, it has not been recovered from any species of Nuphar before in Florida. The world database reveals that it has never been recovered from any plant in this family (Dr. Ian C. Stocks). This is an obscure native species. Specimens in the FSCA have been taken by sweeping salt marshes. See Florida Entomologist 89:459 about a similar opportunist pest species on St. Augustine grass.
