1 page 1 The Society's Claret and White Burgundy Case (Revised Selection) (Product Code : XC189A) Two of our most popular wines - a refreshingly light and fruity merlot-based claret and a tantalisingly appley white Burgundy - in one splendid set! A presentation gift box containing one of each of the following: The Society's White Burgundy 2017 Ripe and round yet with a fresh finish, appley flavour and broad palate. Our best-loved wine for many years, this Mâcon white continues to rise above the ebb and flow of fashion. It is now buyer Tim Sykes who works with longterm supplier Jean-Marc Darbon to craft a blend that is of consistently good quality while respecting vintage differences is a slightly riper vintage than 2016, and the wine is drinking well. 2 page 2 Producer : Les Vins Aujoux This is the source of the bulk of our Beaujolais for the last 50 years, and many members will also have tried the fruits of The Society s work with this excellent Beaujolais-based négoce in the form of our bestselling white wine, The Society s White Burgundy, sourced from the Mâcon. Dealing with a négociant allows The Wine Society to pick and choose, often blending together from different estates in order to end up with a wine that is better than any of its parts. Négoces have had a huge part to play in the recent history of Beaujolais, some of it not so good but some of it very positive. For all its apparent simplicity, Beaujolais is a complicated region that is often the victim of its own capricious climate with late frosts and violent hailstorms a common recurrence. The one name that stands out for us is Dépagneux: Jean Dépagneux was the last of this illustrious merchant family who, with his partners, bought up a list of ailing names such as Aujoux, which had made its name selling Beaujolais to the once profitable Swiss market. Jean retired about a dozen years ago and his place was taken by a young and talented oenologist from Viré called Jean-Marc Darbon. One consequence of the change has been the meteoric rise in the quality of The Society s White Burgundy.

3 page 3 The Society's Claret 2017 With an almost unbroken run as our bestselling red, this fruity, unoaked merlot-based Bordeaux is the result of a long and fruitful partnership with the Sichel family, whose impeccable credentials include ownership and part ownership respectively of crus Angludet and Palmer. They've supplied us with this wine for over a quarter of a century, and we select the final blend each year to keep it fresh and easy-drinking with true Bordeaux character. Not only do they sell wine today, but they are also growers and winemakers, and represent some very well-respected names. They currently own wine estates covering 350 hectares of vineyards, including Châteaux Angludet and Palmer in Bordeaux, and Château Trillol in Corbières. Their technical director is Yvan Meyer, and he is the winemaker behind The Society s Claret, which is currently our bestselling red wine. It is made at Cave Bel Air in the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux region, and the grapes are sourced from local producers. Every year our Bordeaux buyer, Tim Sykes, travels to Maison Sichel to select the final blend. The blend varies greatly each year, but in each vintage our aim remains the same: to create a fresh, easy-drinking and accessible wine with true Bordeaux character, but without the firmer tannins of other clarets that may need more time in the cellar. It is perhaps for this reason that The Society s Claret is always a huge hit with our members.

4 page 4 New World Pair Revised Selection (Product Code : XC181A) The Society s Argentine Malbec 2017 Made for us by Susana Balbo's Dominio del Plata in Mendoza, malbec's spiritual home, and from a typically warm and ripe vintage, this is a soft and satisfying wine with lovely rounded brambly fruit. 5 page 5 Producer : Dominio del Plata After an already long and successful career in winemaking, Susana Balbo described her own winery Dominio del Plata as like my third child, a dream come true. Susana graduated with a degree in oenology in 1981 the first woman in Argentina to do so, but this wasn't enough for the gutsy Balbo: she also achieved the degree with honours as the best graduate of her year. Having worked extensively both in Argentina and throughout the winemaking world (Spain, Chile, Italy, Australia, and California among others) since the early eighties, it wasn't until the cusp of the shiny new millennium in 1999 that she finally realised her ambition of making her own wine at Dominio del Plata in the famous Mendoza region. Susana established her winery in Agrelo, assisted by the renowned Argentine viticulturist Pedro Marchevsky who helped plant the vineyards. Susana s ideas on social responsibility extend to sponsoring the local football club, community dining scheme, and also contributing to the education of their workers children. The team at the winery are young and dynamic, enabling Susana to continue with her quest for innovation to satisfy an ever-changing and increasingly discerning world palate. As well as significantly raising the profile of the torrontés grape by using it to make fresh, citrusy white wines, Susana is seen by many as queen of malbec in the country that made the grape truly famous. Her success with this grape ranges from the vibrant, youthful, everyday Faldeos Malbec a range made for The Wine Society to the silky, oak-aged Signature (in which she also earns great success with cabernet sauvignon). One of her finest wines - the Susana Balbo Brioso is an artful blend of cabernet, malbec, merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot, and is always a triumph with members. Maybe it is her maternal affection for her wines that has made her so skilled at the art of blending, enabling her to achieve some of the most delicate and balanced aromas and flavours with the malbec grape at staggering value for money (a far cry from its early days as the many-named ugly duckling of the French varieties). Achieving this at a time when few thought women capable of even being winemakers makes this accolade all the more admirable.

13 page 13 Producer : Peter Lehmann Peter Lehmann Wines is located in Australia s Barossa Valley, to the north of Adelaide. The company was started in 1979 by winemaker Peter Lehmann at a time of serious overproduction in the Barossa, where independent local growers with unsold grapes were facing the real possibility of financial ruin. Lehmann s consortium of investment partners was set up with the aim of coming to their rescue, and resisting an Australian government proposal to grub up precious Barossa vines, something he considered unthinkable. An undeniably risky business venture back then, the company became a quality-conscious producer, saving Barossa from the brink of failure and also making the Peter Lehmann name world-famous for reliability and value for money in the glass. Under the ownership of the Swiss-based Hess Group which took over in 2003, the company has continued to flourish, making wines from all the major grape varieties. Andrew Wigan is the current winemaker and one of Australia s very best. He oversees a huge portfolio which is absolutely consistent, from entry-level bottles such as Weighbridge and 88 Growers Semillon, a Society exclusive, to fine wines. The company s commitment to the Barossa and local growers has been rewarded with access to over 900 vineyards - unparalleled in the region. Today, Lehmann wines are well-respected examples of their type with many of them ranking among our members favourites for everyday drinking. The iconic Stonewell Shiraz is a blend of top Barossa vineyards and demonstrates the pinnacle of Lehmann s achievement.

Like many co-operatives and estates in the Roussillon, production had historically been geared towards fortified wine but they were able to anticipate the downturn and realign themselves towards table wine which includes their flagship red from Château de Pena. Very wisely, they resisted the temptation to replant with other grape varieties and so kept their large holdings of old carignan and grenache, a good amount of it planted not on appellation land but nonetheless very good. Over the years these vines have formed the base for the very successful Society's French Full Red. There has been a change of cellarmaster in the last two years but if anything that has been wholly positive.

18 page 18 Producer : Domaine du Bosc Situated in the Hérault department in southern France s Languedoc region, Domaine du Bosc is not far from the beautiful seaside resort Cap d Agde. It is a winemaking region steeped in history: Agde has actually been home to vines since the 5th century BC. This long winemaking history has been attributed to Agde s port, which meant that, unlike those in many areas of France, growers were able to export their wines to various Mediterranean countries from very early on. Their proximity to the sea provides the vines with a wonderful Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, sometimes wet autumns and winters. This part of the Languedoc sits on ancient lava flows that are very positive for the wines, allowing them to retain a good deal of freshness. The Besinet family were vine growers for many generations, originally owning vineyards in Montpellier. Pierre Besinet had trained as a chemical engineer and for many years worked in the north of France, far away from any vines. He returned on the death of his father, but very quickly decided to sell up and start somewhere else. Pierre became attracted to the volcanic soils around Agde and that is where he settled, creating Domaine du Bosc. At the time, the vineyard was planted with all manner of red grapes, and geared up for mass production; however, Pierre had the vision to start from scratch and planted other varieties. Starting with cabernet sauvignon and merlot, he was among the first to plant Bordeaux grapes, and then also planted grenache blanc. In time, he would add many more varieties, and to this day is still experimenting: recent additions have included petit verdot and petit manseng. Pierre made his reputation on fresh, clean-tasting, fruity wines. His background helped him make some quite radical changes, especially in the cellar, which was one of the first in the Languedoc to be thermo-regulated. He was also one of the first to adopt night time harvesting, especially for white grapes as a way of preserving fruit flavours and freshness. Today he is helped by winemaker Jean-Etienne Cros, a good friend of the Wine Society who used to manage his family s estate in Gaillac. The day to day running of the business is in the hands of Pierre s daughter Dominique though Pierre now well into his 80 s, still looks in.

Initially, the family sourced its grapes from selected growers, but in 1999 Jannis Anastassiou and Theodoros Anastassiou established their own vineyard in the form of Domain Mega Spileo. Situated above stunning views of the Vouraikos canyon in the north-west of the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece, the vineyard is 800 metres above sea level, and has sandy soils with some clay and gravel. Its history dates back to the 1500s when it was farmed by monks, but Jannis and Theodoros completely replanted the vineyards with a mixture of local and international varieties, from mavrodafne and assyrtiko to syrah and riesling. The temperature-controlled Cavino winery is well equipped with modern winemaking technology, and produces wines in a wide variety of styles, from off-dry whites which fare well in Germany, Russia and China to good, inexpensive dry wines more suited to the UK market. The range we buy is called Ionos, which means omen, and is short for kalos ionos, or good omen. The grapes are sourced from sub-mountainous zones of the Peloponnese at around 350 to 700 metres above sea level the red is typically aghiorghitiko with some kalavrytino and syrah, whereas the white is mostly roditis with sideritis and a healthy splash of muscat of Rio. While many of the family s red wines spend time in a mixture of French and American oak, the Ionos range remains unoaked, fresh and gentle.

21 page 21 Producer : Settesoli The Settesoli co-operative is the largest wine company in Sicily, owning 5% of the island s entire vineyard area. The company was founded in 1958 by a group of farmers who wanted to beat the serious economic difficulties that were spreading across the island. They released their first vintage in 1965, and spent the next 15 years perfecting the production of wines using Sicily s indigenous grape varieties. In the 1980s, the company began to introduce international varieties like cabernet sauvignon, merlot and sauvignon blanc, and the 1990s saw the blossoming of the premium Mandrarossa range. Since then the company has continued to expand whilst keeping the quality levels consistently high. The co-operative now comprises around 2,500 members, who between them harvest over 12,000 acres of vineyards. The company owns four separate wineries which it uses to produce 20 million bottles every year, around 60% of which are exported to over 35 countries worldwide. Settesoli is located at Menfi, a town on the hills in Sicily s south-west corner not far from Agrigento. It isn t surprising that this area has been known for its wine production for thousands of years: the slopes, the sea, and the mild, sunny climate all contribute to an ideal vine growing environment. Vineyards range from sea level up to a height of 400m in the hills, meaning there are a variety of microclimates to explore. These are separated into individual parcels so that each grape variety can be planted in its ideal terroir. Learning from the ancient viticulturists, the company still uses traditional vine training methods, such as the widelypractised goblet (or bush-training), and spalliera or wire-training. Conversely, it also uses state-of-the-art technology to determine the best time for harvesting and, once the grapes have been hand-harvested, modern techniques in the winery (such as an advanced refrigeration system) ensure the grapes achieve their fruity, fragrant potential. Settesoli s premium Mandrarossa range uses only the best grapes, each vineyard plot of which is fermented separately in order to reflect the influence of the land in creating these aromatic, attractive wines.

23 page 23 Producer : Artiga Founded in 2002, Artiga has a new world, modern approach to wine. The company was created by Martí Quer when he returned to his native Spain after spending several years as a head sommelier in New York, and he has spent many years building good relationships with growers to ensure only high quality grapes are used. These are sourced from four DOs Alicante, Jumilla, La Mancha and Campo de Borja and vinified using state-of-the-art wineries in these regions. The wine we buy from Artiga is Saleta, and the grapes for this (mostly moscatel, with around 15% sauvignon blanc) come from coastal vineyards in La Marina, the sub-zone of Alicante where the vineyards rise from the Mediterranean Sea. The hot, humid Mediterranean weather is perfect for moscatel, and the sea breezes help to produce richly aromatic, ripe grapes with a crisp acidity. The soils are mainly limestone, with some areas of alluvial clay left by the rivers flowing towards the coast. Scottish-born winemaker Pamela Geddes, who learned her craft in Australia, selects only the healthiest grapes, which ensures a balanced wine, but also means production quantities are limited according the quality of each vintage. Fermentation occurs in stainless-steel tanks at cool temperatures, with no oak contact and an early bottling, which best captures the fresh, aromatic character of the moscatel grape.

Príncipe de Viana also boast one of the region s most technically modern wineries, built in 2004, with a barrel room that contains more than 15,000 oak barrels. Despite this the winemaking approach is sensitive and modest, aiming always for clean, balanced flavours. The scale of Príncipe de Viana s production brings an enormous economic advantage: by controlling everything from vineyard to bottling in combination with the high volumes produced means that the wines offer some of Spain s best value for money. Sabina is a special label made by Príncipe de Viana for The Wine Society and is one of our top selling Spanish reds. The name Sabina is taken from the indigenous Spanish juniper tree grown locally in Navarra, where this wine comes from. This unoaked style of tempranillo (with a small amount of cabernet sauvignon to add structure) is made in a fruity and balanced style with lovely clean flavours. 26 page 26 Producer : Domaine Mallory et Benjamin Talmard The Talmard family name has been involved in wine production since the 17th century, and it was the current generation s grandfather, Joseph, that planted some of the current Talmard vineyards at the family s home base Uchizy. Joseph s son Paul Talmard led the next generation. He used to deliver his grapes to the local co-opérative at Chardonnay, but in 1971 he withdrew, believing he could make better wine under his own domaine name. His wines went from strength to strength, and in 1997 he appointed his daughter Mallory and her husband Benjamin as chief winemakers. They have taken full control in recent years, and continue to run the winery with Paul s philosophy and values. They now have over 27ha of vineyards. The majority is in Uchizy, but they also have significant quantities in Montbellet, Chardonnay, Tournus, and Farges-lès-Mâcon. The vineyards are handled with the utmost care Mallory and Benjamin know that perfect maturity equals perfect concentration, so they play close attention to the ripening of the grapes. Many of the vineyards are planted on well-exposed slopes, which moderate yields and maximise ripening potential. When they are confident the grapes have reached their ideal ripeness, they use machine-harvesting for ultimate flexibility, and even harvest at night during particularly hot vintages to conserve the quality of the grapes. The grapes are pressed, clarified, and then cool-fermented in stainless-steel tanks and kept on their lees for two to four months. In the spring following the vintage, after chilling and filtration, the wines are bottled as quickly as possible so they have time to develop. Talmard wines are a brilliant example of the ripe, round style of unoaked chardonnay the Mâconnais has to offer.

In this he was helped at the beginning by English merchant, and ex- Waitrose buyer, Mark Lynton. Most of the wines are sourced from a number of cooperatives, mostly along an axe between Carcassonne and Béziers with some fruit also coming from Limoux and from further away in Gascony. The winemaking and bottling is supervised by Xavier Roger, a Sancerrois and recently promoted to chief executive. The core business remains at entry-level prices, which, for The Society, means delicious wines like Domaine Laborie, Domaine Raynier and the marsanne-viognier blend, Pierre Borde, but LGI is also able to act as broker for several top estates. For The Society, this includes Domaine Barroubio in Saint-Jean de Minervois and Christophe Barbier in La Clape.

32 page 32 Producer : Domaine Félines-Jourdan This Languedoc estate is run by the talented Claude Jourdan, whose family has been winemaking in the area for many generations. The family bought Domaine Félines in 1983, changing the name to Domaine Félines Jourdan to mark the start of its, and their, new chapter. Arguably their most famous wine is Picpoul de Pinet, a variety that was granted AOC status in 1985, prompting winemakers to produce better and better examples since. This marked improvement in quality means it has gained considerable popularity in the last few years. However, whereas many co-operatives produce good but unexciting versions, Félines Jourdan leads the way in producing a quintessential example of this round, food-friendly Mediterranean white. The name Picpoul de Pinet refers to the town of Pinet in the very south of France, and Félines Jourdan s 40ha estate is based nearby in Mèze. Much of their vineyards are right on the Mediterranean coast at the edge of the Thau Lagoon (or Bassin de Thau), a picturesque body of water that is home to flamingoes and is particularly famous for its oysters, which are perfectly suited to a glass of Picpoul de Pinet. Recognising the importance of these wonderful natural surroundings, Félines Jourdan practices sustainable viticulture, and are committed to protecting not only the vineyards, but also the lagoon and the nearby bird reserve. The proximity to the coast provides essential cool sea breezes, protecting the health of the vines and helping to keep temperature variation to a minimum. The region has low rainfall which works well with the water-retaining chalky soils. The soils are also particularly suited to the picpoul (or piquepoule) grape s high acidity levels. Picpoul really does live up to its French name: pique means sharp and lively, and poule means soft, characteristics that are evident in the finished wine, which is comparable in many respects to Italy s popular Soaves. Although the Jourdans are proud of their family winemaking heritage and retain much of the wisdom of their ancestors, they are ready to embrace change. Harvest times are adjusted, from vintage to vintage, to ensure optimum grape maturity, and the winery benefits from temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and air conditioning, both crucial to keeping their wines fresher for longer.

34 page 34 Producer : Paul Jaboulet Aîné The man credited with starting the family firm was Antoine Jaboulet in the early nineteenth century. Antoine had twin sons, Henri and Paul. Both expanded the business but it was the elder (aîné) brother who had the business named after him giving the full title of the firm: Paul Jaboulet Aîné. The generations passed until Louis and his brother Jean arrived on the scene. Louis was the brains and marketing genius and it was he who, by some accident, made the very first contact with The Society some 40 years ago. Among the first wines ever bought would have been La Chapelle 1961, probably one of the greatest wines ever made. Louis Jaboulet remained in charge for some time until his son Gérard was rightly put in charge. Gérard, brilliant and outgoing like his father, was a worthy successor and became the driving force behind the firm. Sadly, a succession of calamities in the 1990 s were about to endanger the firm s survival. In the early 1990s Gérard s equally talented brother Jacques, who had overseen winemaking, was involved in a scuba-diving accident which left him in a coma for months and from then on unable to recover his influence. Then, tragically in 1997, Gérard died suddenly, aged just 55. Gérard was not just the driving force of Jaboulet; he also had the authority that held the family together. Following his passing, the next generation, young and inexperienced, struggled to cope. The baton was passed between several members of the family, who never quite managed to restore the harmony and success of old in the wines as much as in family relations. In 2005 news came that the entire family business had been sold to Franco-Swiss financier, Jean-Jacques Frey, who also owns Château La Lagune in Bordeaux as well as having a large holding in Champagne house Billecart-Salmon. His daughter, Caroline Frey, is in charge of winemaking. Much has changed, with Frey s considerable wealth allowing Jaboulet to invest heavily in new cellars as well as more vineyards in Côte-Rôtie and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, for example. The wines themselves are certainly more convincing than those made during the tumultuous period following Gérard s death, but it is still early days for the new regime. At the heart of the estate is Hermitage where Jaboulet own 22 hectares, a little less than Chapoutier. The vineyards, in descending order of size, are Méal, Maisons Blanches, Bessards, Diognieres, La Croix and Rocoules. It is the blend of syrah grapes from these vineyards that make La Chapelle, which is a brand name and not a vineyard. Indeed, though the chapel itself, from where the wine takes its name is owned by Jaboulet, the vines around belong mostly to Chapoutier and Chave. As impactful as La Chapelle, and certainly more affordable, is Crozes-Hermitage from the Thalabert vineyard, an original Jaboulet planting. Another important area for Jaboulet is Cornas, where they make some of the appellation s best wines, from fruit grown on their own estate at Saint Pierre, and from grapes purchased from other growers.

35 page 35 Producer : Paul Jaboulet Aîné - Continued. Jaboulet also has excellent relations with suppliers in the southern Rhône, enabling them to make The Society s Exhibition Cairanne, exclusively for us.

37 page 37 Producer : Bodega Principe de Viana Everything about Bodegas Príncipe de Viana is vast: owners of over 400 hectares of vines in Navarra, controlling a further 500 hectares, planted to Spanish grapes (graciano, garnacha and tempranillo) and international ones (cabernet, merlot and chardonnay). Perfect on its own at parties or enjoy with a plate of jamón.
