1 University House is the home of the University Club at the University of Melbourne The University of Melbourne, Victoria, 3010 Tel: Fax: Newsletter june 2012 Dear Members, The new club facilities at University House at the Woodward (UH@W) have been operating for over two months, and the café lounge and function room are already very popular. Members to Sign-in Guests From the start of Semester 2, on 23 July 2012, Club Members will be asked to sign-in guests and visitors at UH@W. A sign-in book, similar to the sign-in book at University House, will be located at the entry to UH@W. In-House Dining Facility University House and UH@W are The University of Melbourne In-House Dining Facilities, and official university events may be exempt from Fringe Benefits Tax (please enquire with your departmental manager or University House for further information). University Club is a private licensed club and is not open to the general public. Boardroom Lunch The club is presently refurbishing the UH@W boardroom. This new private dining room, seating approximately 45 members and guests, will be in operation from the start of Semester 2, (Monday 23 rd July). This new service will offer a prompt and great-value club menu (limited à la carte) with table service and bookings available. The boardroom will also be available in the evenings as a members lounge, and includes a large 100 cm TV screen. Memberships The new UH@W gives the Club an opportunity to expand our membership, especially to university staff, both academic and professional, located south of Grattan Street. The new facilities offer an oasis away from work where members and their guests can relax and socialise with colleagues, and enjoy the licensed café, lounge, boardroom and function facilities. Full University Club Membership includes use of facilities at both University House and UH@W. New Member Incentive I encourage current University Club members to propose eligible colleagues to join. Members (full members only) who propose membership to a new member will receive a gift (value $65) comprising University House wines and a 12-cup coffee card, redeemable at both University House and UH@W. For new members, the joining fee of $76.25 will be waived until the end of July this year. New Servery for University House Cafeteria The club has commissioned MAA architects and interiors to design a new and modern hot food servery, and a new coffee bar. The upgraded facilities will include short order (food delivered to your table), hot carvery roasts, fresh seafood, a larger selection of deli items and an improved (very popular) sandwich and salad service. The work is scheduled to start in spring this year. 2 NEWS UpDATE June 2012 University House Wins Earth Hour 2012 Earth Hour 2012 took place on Saturday, 31 st March, and the overall winners for The University of Melbourne were staff from University House (Building 112). On 5 th June, University House commemorated their efforts with a sustainable morning tea, sponsored by Property and Campus Services. Each staff member was also rewarded with a gift age of fair trade products. At UH, electricity consumption on Earth Hour weekend 2012 dropped by 18.78% compared with a business as usual weekend. This equates to 130 tonnes of carbon saved over the Earth Hour weekend. Earth Hour winners: University House staff with Property & Campus Services staff. 3 WINE NEWS june 2012 Hello all, Our recent wine functions have provided members and guests with the opportunity to compare and contrast a number of diverse wine styles from passionate wine producers: David Bicknell from Oakridge in the Yarra Valley showed his current range, including individual vineyard and top-of-the-range 864 wines. David s approach in the winery is one of benign neglect, preferring to let the site and variety express themselves in the wines, which show pure fruit and elegant structure. Ant MacKenzie presented his Kidnapper Cliffs wines from the renowned Gimblett Gravels subregion of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, including Solan white; a white Bordeaux style of partialbarrel fermented sauv blanc and semillon; the New arrivals Oakridge Denton Vineyard Chardonnay 2011 Complex, with depth of flavour even at 12.5%. Deceptive length from soil origins framing pink grapefruit, lemon citrus and white nectarine. Lenton Brae Southside Chardonnay Pale quartz-green; a very fine and precise wine with tangy grapefruit leading white peach fruit. Howard Park Flint Rock Chardonnay White field flowers and citrus oils enriched with minerals, nutmeg spice and caramel. A core of citrus, peach, and honeydew in a fine nut-meal texture with crème brulee richness. Soft flint/mineral acidity finishes the wine. Wine Panel Selection. Hill-Smith Estate Chardonnay Pale gold with tinges of green. Smoky wild yeast complexity and aromas of struck flint, white nectarine, cashews and citrus. Full and textural, with nougat, citrus and quince and melon, held in check by restrained acidity. Kidnapper Cliffs Solan 2009 Pale straw in colour with primary aromas of honeysuckle and marzipan. The palate is firm and approachable with flavours of raw nuts and minerality. Will gain complexity and opulence with age. Maude Dry Riesling From Central Otago, this wine shows lemon-lime and mineral aromas and hints of citrus blossom. A full and lively palate with grapefruit, stone fruits and mineral notes. Gundog Semillon 2012 A classic hunter style of balance, finesse and purity of fruit. Enjoy this Semillon while it s young, or after five years of cellar maturation. 3 Drops Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Lively passionfruit and gooseberry aromas jump from the glass and give a rich and generous front palate. The structure is balanced between fruit, crisp acidity and subtle herbs. The finish is long and lean. Barratt Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Displays intense varietal characters including grassy, herbaceous, citrus, tropical and floral aromas and flavours, a full palate and finishing with crisp natural acidity. Maxwell Silver Hammer Shiraz Rich dark berry fruits, mulberry and dark chocolate, with black pepper, matched with some subtle American oak. A generous wine with excellent depth, fruit density and long, velvety tannins. Shingleback Shiraz Brooding mulberry and ripe strawberry aromas with notes of mocha oak. This full-bodied wine overflows with dark berries and earthy minerality. David Traeger Three Centuries Shiraz 2008 Earthy aromas with brambly red fruit, tar and dark spicy cherry. A medium-weighted wine with plenty of concentration; juicy, rich and complex with integrated oak supported by fine dry tannins. Wine Panel Selection. amazingly rich and structured chardonnay; a blue/black cabernet franc brimming with licorice and juniper; the opulent and generous merlotdominant Ariki; and the Northern-Rhone-like syrah lifted blackcurrant fruit and pepper spice. It was great to try styles that are new to the House! And finally, the inimitable Jane Ferrari presented the annual Yalumba Rare and Fine releases, this year focussing on Coonawarra and The Menzies Cabernet great elegance, choc/mint and fine tannins. Of course the Signature Cabernet Shiraz looks pretty smart too! We have stock (some limited) of the wines from these functions. Some standouts are listed in the price list. Cheers, John Macaulay Kidnapper Cliffs Cabernet Franc 2009 Exhibits great richness, generosity, and warmth. Focussed with a graphite and mineral-like finish. With its large extract and sturdy structural components, there is great future potential in the cellar. Oakridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Sweet damson and briary fruit: deep, tinged with violet, and some blackcurrant too. Succulent fruit of the nose, a slow-squeezed black fruit character. Long and mouth-watering. Shingleback Cabernet Sauvignon Chocolate, black fruit aromas with an undercurrent of mint. The rich mid-palate fruit is tightly framed with soft, ripe tannins and the minerality of the soil that nurtures the vines. Audrey Wilkinson Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 Ripe red currants and black berry fruit, with slight chocolate and minty note. Powerful fruit of black cherries and red currants, with hints of white chocolate, spice and fine, firm tannins. Yalumba Signature Cabernet Shiraz 2008 Sweet spices, dusty berries and cedary earth and tar. The palate has a rich Cabernet mouthfeel with dark curranty Shiraz mid-palate tannins. The finish is very persistent, combining great power with elegance.

4 June Mixed Dozen Selections: Eden Hall Riesling 2009 Pale straw coloured with striking green hues, possessing an alluring floral bouquet with hints of green apple and lemon rind. The palate is awash with fruit purity combining lemons, pears and apples with a thrilling, fresh, racy acid finish. This delicious and delicate Riesling can be enjoyed now but will evolve over the next decade. Taylors Pinot Gris 2011 Has distinctly varietal aromas of ripe pear, apple and melon, with a subtle blossom perfume. Has an elegant palate with pear, apple, citrus and subtle spice. There is a pleasing texture to the mid-palate with overall good acid balance and fruit persistence. Tapestry Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Pale straw in colour with an herbaceous bouquet with floral and citrus notes. This is an elegant style with crisp acidity throughout, citrus, slight green bean with passionfruit on the finish. Gipsie Jack Petit Verdot 2007 A collaboration of the Glaetzer and Potts families, this Langhorne Creek red is dark red/purple with ripe dark berries and lifted floral aromas. The palate shows exceptional depth and fruit weight, spicy oak integration, excellent length and finegrained tannins. Hently Farm Bloodline Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 Dominated by bright cherry and blackcurrant fruit, with spice and minty dark chocolate. The palate is filled with fruit sweetness and flavours of liquorice, mint, spice and mocha, with grainy tannins along the mid-palate and a long finish. Tapestry Shiraz 2009 A deep dark red with a purple hue. The bouquet shows intense mint, blackcurrant, ginger and eucalyptus. The palate is elegant and soft with cherry fruit characters, round middle, gentle acidity and fine tannins balancing the finish. Places are very limited for this special lunch. Domaine Comte Armand in Pommard has been owned by the same family in an unbroken line since before the French Revolution an extreme rarity in Burgundy. Benjamin Leroux will present current Comte Armand Regisseur, including several vintages of the Domaine s famous Pommard Clos des Epeneaux and Volnay Les Fremiets.
