7 INAUGURAL BAROSSA WINES OF PROVENANCE TROPHY 2016 Barossa Wine Show To further recognise and celebrate the viticultural and winemaking strength of the Barossa s past, present and future, we are privileged to provide this opportunity for exhibitors to showcase three of its best vintages spanning a 15 year range. Judges assessed exhibits for style continuity, pedigree and representation of maturation potential. Andrew Caillard, MW Provenance Judge Master of Wine, a Roseworthy graduate, Langton s co-founder, 2011 Australian Wine Communicator of the Year recipient, 2011 Baron of the Barossa & longstanding supporter of the region. Many beautiful and stylish wines. The shortlisted brackets possessed wines that showed aromatic complexity, consistency and evolution. Ultimately this is a knockout contest where the weakest link is the crucial game breaker: often older bottles under cork showing a touch of staleness etc, elevated acidity or drying oak. Some of these issues were really just blemishes that can only be picked up in silence. Brian Walsh Provenance Judge Current Chair of Wine Australia Corporation Board, previous Chief Winemaker at Yalumba Wine Company, renowned senior wine judge with more than 30 years experience and has been both Chairman of Judges at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show and Chair of its Wine Committee. A very strong Wines of Provenance section - and great to see so many entries in the inaugural class, considering the age restrictions. Provenance judging is brutal - in the early stages, as one lesser wine tends to knock out the entry. 4 reds and 1 white were in the final judge-off and in the preference judging (Borda system) only 1 point separated the top 3 wines. The Rieslings were generally stunning and the Shiraz were even and strong, with very few noteworthy faults. Particularly pleasing to see the fruit lift and vitality on many of the older red wines. All elements had to be aligned in the top wines - quality, style consistency, maturation performance & potential. The judges loved the task & the wines. 5

8 Fiona Donald Provenance Judge Roseworthy graduate, with winemaking roles spanning 25 years including Senior Red Winemaker at Southcorp Wines, Penfolds and for the past 7 years as Senior Winemaker at Seppeltsfield. Awarded the 2012 Barossa Winemaker of the Year and a seasoned Barossa Wine Show judge. So pleased the Barossa Wine Show has introduced a Wines of Provenance class; I look forward to the class evolving to see entries of Semillon and Grenache/Grenache dominant wines. The Riesling line up had 2 entries in particular that demonstrated text book colour progression of ageing Riesling; along with that, buttery toasty characters prevailed and lovely palates with great line and persistence and talcy acidity. The older wines still have time ahead of them. A pleasure to see these groups of reds. Condition of the old wine, age progression and connectivity of the bracket were key to assessing the groups of 3. Cork failure was disappointing in some instances. The highlight brackets showed a young wine with brightness and balance and restrained oak, a middle aged wine still retaining some brightness but with evolution of colour and flavour; an old wine in good condition with mellow aged characters, not dry and retaining balance and some lively acidity. Bernadette Kaeding Provenance Associate Judge Barossa Vigneron, Barossa Trophy winning Winemaker at Rojomama Wines, Bernadette is also an accomplished SALA Photographic artist, author and respected 2015 Barossa Wine Show Associate Judge. It was an honour to judge the fabulous wines in this class. The expression of place and style was strong. The top five showed stunning examples of consistent personality, with the oldest wine in each set retaining vibrancy and long cellaring potential. 6

Rewarded wines were fresh and succulant with balanced sweetness. Some were flat and phenolic hard. The top examples had great concentration and purity but with a suppleness, yet great length. Many wines looking ripe and general winemaking and fermentation issues. Colours and aromatics forward for vintage 16. Slighty disappointing class. A pleasure to judge. The top examples of young wines were very lively and elegant with a great future ahead. The best examples of the older wines are ageing beautifully.
