5 BURGUNDY 2009 August 23, 2012 Burgundy 2009 Domaines M -Q Tasted in Burgundy October 2010 some from bottle, some from cask Tasted on other occasions see date & place in italics Domaine La Madone Fleurie Fleurie La Madone Tasted at the Carlton Club July 2012 Beaujolais in 2009 was helped by the excellent the weather enriching the flavours, the fruit was ripe giving a fleshy sumptuous sweetness. Mulberry and cerise cherry feature underpinned by bramble all lush and ripe. The fruit depth fills out the back palate. This is Beaujolais at its best so the lighter meats would suit lamb and pork both ideal. Domaine Maillard Chorey-lès-Beaune White Wine Chorey-lès-Beaune Tasted in Burgundy June 2011 There are a lot of powerful flavours on the nose all very dominated by greengages. The sweetness of the fruit fills out the mid palate and although there is some underlying freshness the back palate is quite rich and fleshy. 6 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2009 The nose has a mineral flintiness and the start of the palate is very fresh with lots of crisp apple. Slightly fuller sweeter flavours give more weight on the mid palate but towards the back the minerals and flint come through leaving the finish very crisp. Domaine Maume Gevrey-Chambertin Gevrey-Chambertin Tasted at the Carlton Club July 2013 The nose has the black fruited richness of the northern Côte d Or with ripe fruit giving a meaty depth on the palate. The tannins support the black cherry the powerful flavours balanced by fresher bramble lots of complexity. There is enough depth of flavour not be overpowered by fuller flavoured meats such as beef. Tasted at the Carlton Club July 2014 Six half bottles tasted nose dirty musty the palate bitter unclean badly oxidized. Domaine Michel Maurice Savigny-lès-Beaune Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Gollardes Tasted at the Carlton Club July 2012 Although the nose is quite light the sweetness of the year is there at the back. Ripe mulberry gives more weight on the mid palate and the tannins feel ripe helping to enrich and fill out the middle. Fresher red fruits show towards the back lifting the fruit and bringing out the flavours. It certainly is made for poultry and pork but makes a good partner as well to lamb. Domaine Millet Chablis Petit Chablis Tasted at Charles Taylor September 2010 The nose has a mineral crispness with sweetness showing at the back. There is a green apple character on the mid palate but sweeter richer flavours fill out the finish. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 6

7 BURGUNDY 2009 August 23, 2012 Domaine des Moirots Bissey-sous-Cruchaud Côte Chalonnaise Bourgogne Pinot Noir Tasted in Lincoln s Inn May 2011 Tasted at Lincoln s Inn June 2012 The firmness of the tannins gives a rather abrasive quality but under it there is some sweet fruit. The mulberry and bramble that shows towards the back tends to be overtaken by tannin and acidity leaving the finish a bit short. Givry Rouge Tasted at the Ellis tasting Vintners Hall February 2013 The black fruits on the nose have a minty character and this comes through on the palate. The mid palate starts sweet but towards the back the tannins become all too evident drying the finish. Domaine Mommessin Quincié en Beaujolais Brouilly Les Grumières Tasted at the Carlton Club September 2010 There is not a lot of fruit showing on the nose and the palate is light and lacking in sweet fruit. Red fruits tend to dominate and the sweetness that shows in the middle is soon overtaken by fresh red cherry and raspberry on the back palate. Fleurie La Cerisaie Tasted in Lincoln s Inn May 2011 The richness of bramble and bilberry fills out the nose and gives a sweet start to the palate. The ripe fruit is balanced by slightly fresher redcurrant and cherry but the back palate has the flesh of the black fruits. It would make a good partner to meats such as pork and lamb. 8 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2009 There is mulberry richness on the nose with a meaty depth on the start of the palate. Under the sweetness raspberry and bramble refresh but it fills out at the back the finish rich and ripe fruited. Domaine de Montille Volnay Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots Tasted at the O W Loeb tasting January 2011 The nose is full of sweet ripe fruit and this richness fleshiness fills out the mid palate. Under the sweetness there is an apple freshness that lifts the flavours and gives balance. The back palate is full of flavour. Beaune 1er Cru Sizies Tasted at the O W Loeb tasting January 2011 Although the nose is very fragrant it does not have a lot of substance. Richer fruit comes through on the palate black fruits dominating at first but the freshness of raspberry wins through balancing. Ripe fleshy mulberry and bramble pack out the finish. Volnay 1er Cru Champans Tasted at the O W Loeb tasting January 2011 The nose has the freshness of raspberry and is given sweetness by richer mulberry. The palate is very red fruit influenced quite rich in the middle but towards the back the fresher red fruits take over lightening the finish. Domaine Moret-Nominé Beaune Bourgogne Blanc It is very rich with lots of honeyed fruit on both nose and palate. Ripe melon gives flesh in the middle and there is an added richness from the greengage that lies beneath. Although the fruit is ripe and the palate supple there is enough lime and apple to balance and lift the flavours. Rully It is light with the freshness of apples on the nose. The palate feels richer a touch of greengage behind the fresher flavours. The fruit lasts well on the finish. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 8

9 BURGUNDY 2009 August 23, 2012 Meursault Les Narvauz The nose has the freshness of lime and apple but on the palate there is honeyed richness depth of fruit. The rich ripe flavours are underpinned by mineral and citric freshness fragrant flavours are there on the long finish. Puligny-Montrachet Although this is only a village wine it is serious with the greengage richness backed by a racy mineral mix. Sweet fruit is there towards the back the sweetness well balanced by freshness. Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières There is a lot of fruit on the nose, the richness and power backed by apple and mineral freshness. The fruit on the mid palate fills the mouth with richness but there is enough fresh fruit and mineral to balance giving the finish an attractive racy length. Meursault Le Cromin There is an appealing freshness on the nose backed by richer more honeyed greengage. The richness of the fruit fleshes out the palate a lovely depth of flavour. There is a balancing freshness towards the back giving the finish lots of length. Meursault Sous La Velle The nose is very dominated by greengages giving it richness. Although fruit power is very much in evidence on the palate there is a crisp crunchy freshness underneath. The layers of fruit first ripe greengage then fresh lime give lots of character. Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes Ripe honeyed pineapple gives richness on the nose but there is behind all of the fleshiness citric freshness. There are lots of ripe flavours on the palate, sweet ripe fleshy melon with behind all of this richness the freshness of grapefruit. Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières Although there is a honeyed richness about the nose there is an underlying freshness. Greengage and melon enrich the palate grapefruit and lime refresh. The mix of flavours gives an attractive complexity and the finish has an elegant racy mineral quality. Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières The richness of ripe fruit gives lots of power on the nose and sweetness on the palate. The melon richness is balanced by apple and citric freshness lots of lovely intermingling flavours. The back palate has that appealing mix of fruit power but racy mineral and apple. Meursault 1er Cru Les Gouttes d Or Ripe apricot gives richness on the nose and flesh at the start of the palate. 10 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2009 dominates. Layers of flavour ensure complexity with the freshness bringing out lovely fragrances on the finish. The fruit lingers on the long finish. Domaine Thierry Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Bourgogne Rouge The nose has more of a black fruit influence and although quite light is lovely and fragrant. It feels richer in the middle with more sweet fruit showing but then towards the back the freshness takes over lifting the fruit on the finish. Gevrey-Chambertin Vigne Belle On the nose there is an attractive mix of fruits fresh and fragrant. Fruit ripeness shows on the palate giving richness in the middle and sweetness towards the back. Layers of black and red fruits bramble and mulberry give lots of complexity on the back palate. Domaine J Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale Tasted at the O W Loeb tasting January 2011 The nose is sweet and rich with lots of powerful black fruits. The palate although rich has a balancing red fruited freshness with the layers of flavour giving complexity. The ripeness of the fruit gives a fleshy richness on the back palate. Domaine Mugnier-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée Vosne-Romanée An attractive mix of fruits shows on the nose with at first the red fruits appearing to dominate but then black cherries come through and take over. The mid palate is sweet packed with ripe fruit and this fleshiness enriches the finish. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 10

11 BURGUNDY 2009 August 23, 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Chaignots It is rich and mainly black fruited on the nose. The ripeness of the fruit gives a fleshy sweetness on the palate but there is enough freshness to balance. The tannins towards the back are firm slightly holding back the fruit but with time they will integrate allowing the richness of the fruit to show. Échezeaux Grand Cru There is a lovely complex mix of flavours on the nose. Red fruits appear to dominate giving a fresh start to the palate but the ripe black that lie underneath show enriching and fleshing out the middle. The back palate is lush the ripeness of the tannins allowing the fruit to show to advantage. Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet Chassagne-Montrachet Tasted at the O W Loeb tasting January 2011 The nose is quite tight the acidic firmness holding back the fruit. Whilst there is a sweeter feel on the palate the apple freshness shows through tending to shorten the finish. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Chenevottes Tasted at the O W Loeb tasting January 2011 Ripe fruit gives richness on the nose and although on the palate there is a lot of citrus and apple the fleshy melon is there behind. It is a bit tight on the back palate but there is plenty more fruit to show. Domaine Jean-René Nudant Ladoix Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée La Chapelle Notre Dame Tasted at Edward Parker Wines London Office January 2011 Black fruits intermingle with red all feeling ripe and sweet. The ripe fruit gives richness on the start of the palate but behind the sweetness is freshness cherry stone and mulberry. 12 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2009 Domaine Nuiton-Beaunoy Beaune Volnay Tasted at Charles Taylor September 2013 The nose has a floral charm and the palate starts light fragrant and red fruited. The mid palate is sweeter with richer flavours with a nice depth of fruit on the finish. Domaine Odoul-Coquard Morey-Saint-Denis Bourgogne Passetoutgrain Tasted at the Edward Parker tasting Vintners Hall November 2010 There is a red fruited fragrance on the nose and the raspberry that shows on the start of the palate gives it a fresh feel. Sweeter fruit gives flesh in the middle red cherry backed by mulberry. The finish is quite light but has an appealing fragrance. Bourgogne Rouge The fruit on the nose is sweet with lots of black cherry in evidence. Although the richness on the palate is balanced by bramble and hints of bilberry the ripeness of the fruit gives flesh in the middle and towards the back. The finish is lighter quite fragrant with an elegant feel. Morey-Saint-Denis Cray Grillon A fleshy richness packs out both nose and palate. The powerful mix of blackcurrant, black cherry and bramble gives richness and complexity. Structured tannins enhance rather than holding back the flavours. Despite the fleshy power the finish has finesse and elegance. Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Aux Cheseaux Bramble and Morello cherry gives the freshness whilst black cherry the richness. There is a lovely weight of fruit fleshing out the mid palate and as the tannins feel ripe it is lovely and supple. Layers of flavour give complexity with towards the back the brooding black fruits give the feel of so much more to show. Tasted at Leathersellers May The nose is fresh fragrant with brambles and mulberries. There is a sweet feel to the mid palate the layers of flavour giving lots of complexity and towards the back although slightly lighter the ripeness of the fruit makes for a sweet finish. 13 BURGUNDY 2009 August 23, 2012 The nose is still quite tight with more of a black fruit influence and although the start of the palate if firm and fresh the mid palate is more open sweeter and richer. The mix of black and red fruits gives complexity the red fruits underpinned by bramble and black cherry depth on the finish. Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes The nose has lots of power a rich mix of fruits black fruits backed by fresher red fruits. The palate starts quite fresh all quite red fruited but towards the middle is the richness of black cherry. Ripe tannins aid the richness and allow the sweet fruit to flesh out mid and back palate. Right at the back there is a savouriness that adds so much character. Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Sainte Jacques There is an appealing freshness to the red fruits on the nose with towards the back a hint of peppery spice. The tannins are firm at the moment but feel ripe so not aggressive. Rich sweet fruit comes through towards the back with the richness of sloes on the finish. Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Argillats There is cherry on the nose black cherry backed by Morello cherries fresh at first with richness behind it. There is a lovely sweetness to the palate again quite black fruit dominant, a powerful mix of flavours. The freshness that shows through towards the back gives the finish more of an elegant feel. Gevrey-Chambertin The nose has a lot of very generous fruit all very black fruited. The mid palate feels rich with ripe fleshy fruit backed by rounded tannins helping the suppleness. There is enough freshness to balance and bring out the fragrances on the finish. Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes There is so much happening on the nose first it seems all bramble dominated but then there is fresh red cherry and raspberry but underpinning all these different fruits is some black cherry. The fruit is ripe and the tannins supple giving richness on the mid palate and flesh on the finish. The complexity of flavours is added to by a touch of toasty oak. Vosne Romanée Although the nose is very red cherry in character it feels quite rich. The mid palate is lighter with lots of fresh raspberry but towards the back there is the sweetness richness of flavour that shows on the nose. The finish is long and has an attractive floral mix. Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes It is lush fleshy packed out with ripe black fruits. Blackcurrant tends to dominate but underpinning is a lovely mix of black cherry and bramble, layers of fruit lots of complexity. 14 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2009 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru There is a lot of blackcurrant on the nose its ripeness giving richness. Under this sweet damson fruit is fresher bramble and bilberry adding to the layers of flavour. Rounded tannins aid the feeling of richness the fleshiness nicely balanced by some fresher flavours. The finish is long flowing floral and has great finesse. Clos Vougeot Grand Cru The fruit feels very ripe giving a fleshy richness to the nose. There is freshness a mix of red fruits and this brings out the more floral character. Although the tannins are quite firm giving structure they feel ripe allowing full fruit expression. The back palate is savoury black fruited and complex. Domaine Olivier Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Montagny 1er Cru Bonneveaux Tasted at Mercers Hall May 2012 The nose has a good weight of flavour with rich greengage filling out the palate. Behind all of the greengage and melon there is cut apple that balances refreshes and brings out the fruit intensity on the finish. Auxey-Duresses Tasted in Le Train Bleu Paris June 2013 The richness of the year fills out the nose and the palate has melon fleshiness at the start. Under the ripe fruit apple refreshes giving a lighter crisper feel on the back palate and finish. Domaine Pagnotta Chagny Mercurey La Bussière Tasted in Lilley March 2011 The nose is packed out with rich ripe fruit lots of apricots and pineapple. The fleshy richness is there on the palate but behind all of the lush fruit is citric freshness giving a racy feel on the finish. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 14

15 BURGUNDY 2009 August 23, 2012 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune Tasted in Lilley March 2011 There is an attractive freshness on the nose quite red fruit driven. The fresh feel is there on the start of the palate but the middle is richer and sweeter with lots of bramble. The tannins are still quite firm slightly holding back the fruit at the moment. Rully Clos de Bellecroix Tasted in Lilley March 2011 The nose has some nice rich flavours with black fruits bramble and black cherry to the fore. The mid palate is rich with a mix of flavours the black fruits backed by fleshy strawberry and mulberry. Although the tannins are in evidence the sweetness of the fruit enriches the finish. Mercurey La Bussière Tasted in Lilley March 2011 The nose is lighter fragrant with much more of a red fruit influence. Firm tannins rather hold back the fruit on the start of the palate but towards the back the mix of flavours comes through fleshy black fruits leading but underpinned by attractive ripe reds. Domaine Agnes Paquet Meloisey Sparkling Wines Crémant de Bourgogne 92 Pinot Noir 45% Chardonnay 35% Gamay 20 % Aligoté 5% There is a lovely freshness about the nose with behind richer sweet fruits. The palate has depth of fruit from the mix of greengage and white peach. The freshness of grapefruit and apple lift the flavours and lengthen the finish, crisp but not hard. Bourgogne Rouge There is a lot of fresh cherry and raspberry on the nose with this freshness very much in evidence on the start of the palate. Sweeter bramble gives a richer feel in the middle and as the tannins feel ripe there is a nice weight of flavour on the finish. Tasted in the Devonshire Fell Hotel North Yorkshire September The nose has a mix of flavours with the richness of mulberry and black cherry backed by some fresher bramble. Sweet fruit gives some weight on the mid palate but towards the back red fruited freshness takes over giving it a slightly lighter more elegant feel. 16 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2009 Violets and fresh red cherries feature on the nose. The palate starts light but towards the middle there are richer flavours with hints of black fruits. The cherry freshness comes back giving a lighter feel to the finish. Pommard 1er Cru Les Combes Although the nose is quite light there are richer sweet flavours on the palate. Black and red fruits intermingle with black cherry and blackberry giving some fleshiness in the middle and raspberry and red cherry the freshness on the finish. Domaine Parent Pommard Corton Blanc Grand Cru Concentrated pineapple enriches the nose and gives a voluptuous fleshiness on the palate. The rich ripe fruit is underpinned by apple freshness balancing the sweetness and giving a crisper feel towards the back. Despite the crunchy mineral freshness greengage power fleshes out the back palate. Bourgogne Rouge The richness of the black fruits gives an attractive sweetness on the nose and flesh on the palate. Bramble and blueberries are all very much in evidence their ripeness fleshing out the mid palate and giving a meaty richness towards the back. The black fruits have a lovely savoury edge. Beaune 1er Cru Les Epenottes There is a supple fleshiness on both nose and palate. Fruit and tannins feel ripe enriching the mid palate the lush mix of bramble, mulberry and black cherry all adds to the complexity. Despite the richness there is a charming elegance about the finish. Pommard Croix Blanche There is a lot of fruit power on the nose and giving a fleshy richness on the palate. Voluptuously rich black fruits intermingle with red, lots of complexity. The ripe tannins ensure that fruit sweetness fills out the back palate. Pommard 1er Cru Les Argillières Despite the fruit feeling ripe the nose is lighter lovely and fragrant. Red fruits show at first on the palate but behind are some richer black the layers of flavour giving lots of interest. The powerful fruit mix gives way to lighter flavours towards the back ensuring a lovely flowing elegance on the finish. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 16

17 BURGUNDY 2009 August 23, 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins The black fruits that appear to dominate give both richness and power on nose and palate. The tannins give structure but as they are ripe they allow the meaty fleshy fruit to enrich the back palate. There are some attractive crunchy red fruit flavours balancing the sweetness.. Pommard 1er Cru Les Chaponnières Although it appears to be very black fruit influenced there are fresher fruits underpinning with bilberry and cherry very much to the fore. The tannins are fine grained allowing the sweet fruit to show to advantage. The flavours linger on the back palate. Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots (Blend of Grand & Petit) Despite the mass of rich fruit on the nose there is an underlying fragrance and elegance. Blackberry and red cherry vie for dominance the black fruit richness appearing to win. Despite the fruit power there are lighter, fresher more elegant flavours coming to the fore. Layers of black and red fruits ensure complexity. Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens The nose is fresher with a mix of mineral and red cherry. Powerful sweeter black fruits enrich the mid palate, the richness of flavour lightened to some extent by red fruit freshness. There is power on the back palate but also some lighter more fragrant more elegant flavours. Domaine Jean Pascal Puligny-Montrachet Puligny-Montrachet Tasted in Puligny-Montrachet June 2013 The sweetness of the year enriches the nose lots of ripe greengage. There is more citrus on the palate slightly lighter with these fresh flavours and some flinty chalk giving a racy finish. Patriache Père et Fils Beaune Pommard 1er Cru Clos du Verger Tasted at the Hospice de Beaune Dinner November 2014 Sweet and ripe fleshy black and red fruits the fruit is rich slightly hot and the tannins very supple. 18 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2009 Domaine Corinne Perchaud Chablis Chablis Tasted at the Liberty Wines tasting January 2012 The nose has apple crispness and this combined with citrus refreshes the mid palate. There is a sweeter feel towards the back a mix of greengage and melon but the finish is racy mineral fresh and long. Domaine Marie-Christine & Vincent Perrin Volnay Saint-Romain There is lots of greengage and pineapple on the nose. The richness of these flavours is well balanced by fresh apple on the palate with the mix of richness yet freshness giving lots of attraction. The freshness of the greengage and apple lingers on the back palate. Meursault The nose has lots of honey backed by apricots lovely and rich. There is enough acidity on the mid palate apparently to balance but then the fleshy fruit takes over overpowering the freshness on the back palate and giving it a rather one dimensional quality. Bourgogne Rouge The nose is remarkably sweet and fleshy with mulberry and cherry vying for dominance. Fresh raspberry lightens the mid palate but the fruit sweetness shows through towards the back giving an easy rounded finish. Volnay Cuvée Marie There is lots of upfront mulberry on the nose the richness of the fruits nicely balanced by raspberry freshness. The mid tannins are firm but feel ripe allowing the sweet fruit to flesh out the back palate. Despite all of the richness it has a charming elegance. Tasted at Leathersellers May Red fruits dominate the nose and the start of the palate fresh and quite firm. It fills out in the middle with ripe fruit and fine tannins yet towards the back the freshness is tending to hold back full fruit expression. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 18

19 BURGUNDY 2009 August 23, 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans The nose has a lovely mix of flavours red fruits appearing to dominate but then the underlying black fruits push through. Violets are there giving a fragrant charm that shows despite the fruit richness. The palate is packed with ripe flavours its richness balanced by the tannic structure. Volnay 1er Cru La Gigotte (Monopole) The mix of bramble and black cherry is ripe giving a rich fleshy feel to the nose and power on the palate. There are layers of flavour lovely and complex the black fruited richness so well balanced by fresher red cherry and mulberry. The back palate has power and the fruit lingers on the finish. Tasted at Lincoln s Inn November Depth of fruit on the nose the palate is fleshy ripe fruited and supple a hint of mid freshness balances the layers of fruit give complexity and although still firm at the back there is ripe fruit richness and depth on the finish. Volnay 1er Cru Les Carelles The nose has red fruit freshness seemingly quite light and fragrant. The palate is richer packed with red and black cherry and given an added complexity by bramble and hints of cassis. The layers of fruit help complexity with the fragrant fruit on the back palate giving it a flowing elegance. Pommard Les Chanlins Hauts Violets show on the nose with under their fragrance a rich mix of black and red fruits. The palate has fruit power, its richness and fleshiness well balanced by red fruit acidity. The finish is long and rich, lots of ripe cassis. Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot Morey-Saint-Denis Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru La Richemone It is very light with not a lot showing on the nose but more fruit is there on the palate enriching. Red fruits appear to dominate the mid palate quite light and fresh but there are black fruits in evidence filling out the back palate. Chapelle Chambertin Vieille Vignes The fruit on the nose is rich and ripe more black than red fruit in influence. 20 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2009 Mazoyères Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Ripe sweet black fruit gives a fleshy richness on the nose and sweetness on the start of the palate. It is deep serious with layers of flavours, bramble and black cherry backed by mulberry. The tannin ripeness allows the richness of the fruit to give a sensuous fleshiness on the back palate. Chambertin Clos de Bèze It is floral with some lovely fresh red fruits a mix of raspberry and mulberry. The sweetness of the fruit enriches the mid palate with more black fruits, cherry and bramble showing. The sweet fruit is well balanced by some fresher red that lifts the flavours on the finish. Domaine Patrick Pestre Beaune Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Tasted in Burgundy November 2011 Black fruits are in evidence on the nose but behind are some quite rich and ripe red. The palate has a mix of flavours all quite complex but the tannins are all very obvious at the moment rather holding back fruit expression. Domaine Fernand & Laurent Pillot Puligny-Montrachet Puligny-Montrachet Noyers Brets The nose has a vegetal earthiness which overpowers and hides the fruit. Although sweeter fruit is there on the mid palate the herbal character comes through on the finish. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vergers There is some sweetness on the nose with apple freshness showing behind. A vegetal greenness takes over towards the back rather dominating the fruit. 21 BURGUNDY 2009 August 23, 2012 The vegetal hints on the nose have no charm and they tend to hide the fruit mix on the palate. The mid palate is a bit light and the fruit tends not to last on the finish. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse Sweet melon and greengage give richness on the nose and the start of the palate. The mid palate is a bit hard with apple freshness and the back palate is spoilt by a vegetal herbal character. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes Although there is some sweet fruit at the start the herbal greenness that pushes through gives a slight bitterness in the middle and grubbiness on the back palate. Pommard 1er Cru Charmots Ripe plum enriches both nose and palate. There is freshness behind an attractive mix of red fruits but it is the fruit sweetness that comes through towards the back enriching the finish. Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens The nose is tight with the freshness of red fruits overpowering and holding back expression. Although it feels richer on the mid palate the high acidity shows through towards the back dominating and closing down the finish. Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Bourgogne Aligoté Tasted at the Charles Taylor tasting September 2010 The nose is light quite hard from the slightly green acidity. Although there is some sweetness it lacks depth of flavour and the green apple acidity gives a hard feel to the finish. Bourgogne Chardonnay Tasted at the Charles Taylor tasting September 2010 There is some sweet greengage fruit on the nose and this gives a rich feel on the palate. The mid palate is broad and fleshy but underpinning is freshness that helps to lift the flavour and balance. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie Tasted at the Charles Taylor tasting September 2010 The complexity is there on the nose a nice mix of flavours, sweetness balanced by some apple acidity. The mid palate is rich there is some nice fleshy melon and greengage in the middle and giving some weight on the finish. Domaine Paul Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Chassagne-Montrachet Tasted at the Carlton Club January 2013 The nose is fresh steely very lime and mineral driven. The start of the palate is lean and racy but behind there are richer flavours some sweet melon and greengage with the finish like the start of the palate apple crisp. Domaine du Point du Jour Fleurie Fleurie 2009 Cuvée Tradition Tasted at Edward Parker Wines London Office February 2011 Although the nose seems very red fruited there are richer black behind and these tend to feature more strongly on the palate. Red fruits refresh the start but the tannins are very much in evidence overtaking the sweetness and holding back full fruit expression leaving the back palate with a slightly rustic feel. Chiroubles 2009 Cuvée Fernande Janin Tasted at Edward Parker Wines London Office February 2011 There is a very attractive mix of bramble and black cherry on the nose all feeling ripe and giving some richness. There is more freshness about the palate with the mix of flavours giving some complexity. The mid palate is richer with more of a bramble influence and the finish has an attractive richness of flavour. Savigny-lès Beaune Tasted at the Carlton Club May 2013 There is a herbal slightly green character underlying the fruit on the nose and the palate is light fresh but quite hard. Slightly sweeter flavours show towards the back but the finish has the same herbal character that tends to dominate the nose. Cave de Prissé Prissé Mâcon-Prissé Les Clochettes Tasted at the Charles Taylor tasting September 2010 It is light fresh with not a great deal of weight on the mid palate. The acidity tends to overtake the fruit towards the back leaving the finish very hard. Tasted at the Carlton Club January The fruit on the nose is quite sweet but on the palate mineral and citrus tend to dominate giving a slightly hard and hollow mid palate. There is some richer greengage on the back palate and the finish has some depth. Bourgogne Chardonnay Les Belles Roches Tasted at the Charles Taylor tasting September 2010 The green herbaceous nose is very unattractive and this character tends to dominate the palate. The middle has a touch of sweetness but the finish is citrusy and hard. Tasted at the Carlton Club January The nose has a herbal lime character slightly hard. There is a bit more generosity on the palate but towards the back the herbal citrus tends to dominate and shorten the finish. Saint Véran Les Pierres Blanches Tasted at the Charles Taylor tasting September 2010 There is a herbal character on the nose and this comes through on the palate. Auxey-Duresses Vieilles Vignes Tasted at the O W Loeb tasting January 2011 It is light quite fragrant with an attractive mix of fresh fruits. The palate has richer flavours more greengage in character and this fruit lingers on the finish.
