Rare Wine Co., Historical Series New York Malmsey (NV) SKU History: The RWC Historic Series represents a close collaboration between The Rare Wine Co. and Vinhos Barbeito. First conceived in 1998, the goal from the beginning was to produce a series of affordable varietal Madeiras that possess the magical qualities of great Vintage Madeira. Each wine is made up 85% of the stated varietal, selected from parcels of wine 10 to 20 years old. The remaining 15% is very old Tinta Negro Mole, 40 to 60 years of age, which gives the wines much of their aged vintage character. Each wine is named for an American seaport where Madeira was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. The labels feature early engravings and historic information, further evoking a sense of Madeira s towering importance in American history. Aging: The best Madeiras, including those in the Historic Series, spend years or decades in large barrels of various sizes, subject to substantial yearly swings in temperature (a method called canteiro). This time is what gives the wines their unique personalities. 'New York' Malmsey Tasting Notes: The New York has the deep color and classic toffee/caramel notes that define Malmsey. It s a perfect wine with which to finish a meal, or with rich desserts, including chocolate. About Malmsey (): This wine, the sweetest and richest of Madeiras, is made from the grape, although the precise type of has changed over the years. For centuries, Malmsey has been revered and hard to come by. In his 1961 book on Madeira, Rupert Croft-Cooke wrote that malvasia has never been grown in large quantities. As far back as 1757, more than a century before the Phylloxera scourge, a shipper wrote to his customer in America, "As regards the Malmsey, the whole Island produces only about 50 pipes (casks) annually and they are the sole property of one gentleman and the excessive high prices paid for them and the quantity being so small has made that wine never been regarded as a branch of trade." Domaine Grassa, Bas-Armagnac Reserve Producer Domaine Grassa Appellation Armagnac SKU The fabled Armagnac area is located in Gascony in the southwest of France. Gascony, which abuts Spain and the Pyrenees to the south, is a temperate region whose menu of delights includes foie gras, lovely red and white table wines, and rich local cuisine. Part of what separates Armagnac s brandies from those of rival Cognac is the state of the locale s base wines. Whereas Cognac s wines are typically thin, acidic, and rarely employed as table wine, Armagnac s are generous and perfectly suitable as still wines served with lunch or dinner. The Cognaçais go to great lengths to assure anyone who will listen that their wines are meant to be watery and bitter because, the reasoning goes, those types of wines produce far better brandies. The Armagnaçais, on the other hand, believe that the quality and character depth of the base wine does contribute mightily to the making of brandy. Who is right? Both. The skimpy, astringent wines fermented in Cognac provide exactly what the Cognaçais require for distillation, as do the heartier wines of Armagnac for Gascony s distillers. Consumers have two distinct grape-based, oak-matured spirits that have dazzled imbibers for centuries. Curious opening aromas emit scents of marshmallow and cheesecake; after aeration the bouquet takes on a toffee/caramel personality with hints of ripe grapes, walnuts and red plums not your run-of-the-mill Armagnac aroma. At palate entry huge flavors of rancio, oak resin, blue cheese, grape preserves and dark caramel explode. Aftertaste is long, lush, satiny and honey-sweet. Marie Duffau, Bas-Armagnac Napoléon (NV) Producer Marie Duffau Appellation Bas-Armagnac SKU Using only estate grown grapes from the heart of Bas Armagnac, this 6 year old expression has a complex array of aromas. Dried fruits such as prunes, apricots, and raisins fill the headspace of the glass. The taste has warming flavors of caramel, plum, and spice that leave your palate fully coated and fulfilled. Marie Duffau perfectly exemplifies classic French savoir-faire, perhaps better than anyone else. This wonderful estate has a storied lineage in the region dating back many years, to when Prosper Delord could be seen carting his still around the Bas ensuring that the local farmers were able to distill their prized fruit into magnificent potions to be put down for generations. Time may have passed on, but the Armagnacs of this house are still made the exact same way, and on the same 20

3 hectares of farmland, as they were back in the 1870s. This bottling of Napolean Duffau ingeniously coaxes out every drop of complexity possible for a 6-year brandy. The diverse grape blend, the multiple oak treatments, and the very slow fermentation and distillation come together perfectly. It s no wonder this is the best-selling Armagnac in the country. The recipe for Isle of Skye was created by Ian Macleod in the 19th century and is still used today. It contains an unusually high proportion of aged Island and Speyside malts, each of which is aged to maturity (8-15 years) at its distillery of origin. Once the final blend is determined, mature whisky grain is added and the whisky ages in cask for at least six months. This last step is expensive and labor intensive but necessary to create the smooth and mellow characteristics unique to an Isle of Skye whisky.
