4 Fine & Rare Wines Featuring the Magnificent Private Collection of Lee Weintraub Jeff Zacharia President The final gavel hasn t yet fallen on the first half of 2018, and Zachys is already off to a running start. Things began in February with a $3.2m auction, over 99% sold, and followed it up with the March auction in celebration of La Paulée, which was $5.9m and 100% sold, including record prices for Dujac and DRC. I m writing this on the first truly feels-like-spring day, looking forward to two auctions: both the tome you hold in your hands (some of us up in White Plains disagree, but this may be the most lots we ve ever done in two days) and the two-day June Hong Kong Auction. I ll say this up front: get in your lists for the fall, as it s going to be amazing. The idea of highlighting certain lots in a catalog of this size is approaching the absurd. But it s tradition, so here are a few of my favorites. A Fine Offering of the Greatest Rare Wine Ever (Lots ) is all about the provenance. The high water mark may be Lot 196, a magnum of 1874 Lafite that traces its roots back to a 1974 Sotheby s Auction. This offering is like a walk down memory lane from great cellars: Stormby, Koch, Lyons and Haut-Brion itself. I m also partial to the cellar of Tim Forbes (Lots ). We sold a portion of this collection in March to stunning results. This is the Bordeaux portion (with a touch of Burgundy) and the 1959 and 1961 First Growths are particularly impressive. We head into a nice selection of Jacky Truchot (Lots ), Coche-Dury (Lots ) and much, much more. One of the cornerstone consignments of this auction comes from pristine professional storage at Domaine, and we re calling it A Wealth of Rarities (Lots ) because that s what it is. Much of the collection was bought from us and other large retailers and we re delighted to be offering it again at auction. I d be remiss if I didn t point out our title consignment, wines from the cellar of none other than Lee Weintraub (Lots ). Making up the bulk of day 2, Lee s collection is sure to go down in history as one of the most meticulously curated cellars out there. Be sure to spend some time reading his personal story at the top of his collection. The Excellence Collection IV (Lots ) holds something for everyone, and the cellar of Gail and Stephen Freifeld (Lots ) is a wonderful wealth of old wine from a deep, cool cellar. Lastly I should point out the massive vertical of Opus One (Lots ) and some wonderful spirits (Lots ). It s truly an honor that so many people are willing to trust their wines to Zachys that we re able to present you with an auction catalog of this size. And it s true without a doubt: there are only the best of the best here, and the variety is astounding, from Bordeaux to Burgundy to Greece to Madeira and everything in between. 6 Cellar Highlights: Day 1 Lots Lot 453 Lot 658 A FINE OFFERING OF THE GREATEST RARE WINE EVER (LOTS ) It s a pleasure to present wines such as the 24, 45, and 49 Haut Brion, all with provenance back to named consignments. Wines from such legendary cellars as Graham Lyons, Nils Stormby, Château Haut-Brion, and William Koch are offered here. Other legends such as a 6L of 1989 Haut Brion and an 1874 Lafite magnum (on the inside cover of this catalog) from a 1974 Sotheby s auction. We could talk about the Bordeaux for pages and pages, but the Guigals deserve some attention, as does the 1990 Cuvée Cathelin. The Champagne is all Grande Marque (with a dash of Selosse) and supremely mature. There s even a portion of California classics and real esoterica: Dujac Marc de Bourgogne and Keo Commandaria Cyprus wine. A FABULOUS COLLECTION OF BLUE CHIP EUROPEAN AND NAPA WINES (LOTS ) Bidders joining the flight to quality in volatile markets could do no better than to purchase as many of the wines as possible in this blue-chip slice of a 10,000-bottle private collection. The property of an active collector and taster and popular member of the New York area wine community, the vintages span 1959 to present, with virtually all wines from the 1994 vintage and later purchased on release and placed into a custom-built underground home wine cellar. Bordeaux 2000 and later were purchased as futures, and almost all the California wines were purchased directly from mailing lists. Of particular interest are the large format Bordeaux in original cases from the 2000, 2003, and 2005 vintages, and the extraordinarily high quality of the Burgundy producers represented, led by DRC, Leroy, and Liger-Belair. MOST EXCELLENT RARE BURGUNDY INCLUDING RENE ENGEL (LOTS ) From one of the rarest now-defunct domaines in Burgundy comes this very special offering of Rene Engel. Up there with Jacky Truchot in that the wines simply aren t being produced any more, this has to be the single largest offering of Engel wines ever. Clos Vougeot, Echézeaux, Grands Echézeaux, and in rarer-than-hens -teeth magnum and even jeroboam formats. There s also Ponsot, Drouhin, Faiveley and more in this offering, but without a doubt, the Engel you will never find again! TREASURES FROM A EUROPEAN CELLAR (LOTS ) The following consignment comes to Zachys from a very longtime friend and enthusiastic collector in Europe. The most collectible names of the moment are all found here some young, and some just waiting to be opened! From rare vintages of Bordeaux First Growths dating back to the early 1900s, this collection has something for every Bordeaux enthusiast. A WEALTH OF RARITIES (LOTS ) The 100-point wines in this consignment are numerous: 2009 VCC, 2010 Ducru, 2010 Lafleur and Léoville las Cases, and more. The offering includes DRC, magnums of Leflaive, mature and young Yquem, Guigal and Chave, and many lots of Champagne. This is truly a collection in which every major wine region is represented. 6

7 Cellar Highlights: Day 2 Lots 1239 & 1240 Lot 1635 Lots THE PROPERTY OF AN ESTEEMED COLLECTOR (LOTS ) This pristine cellar comes from just a short distance outside of New York City. Though many regions are represented, the focus is on Bordeaux, especially wines from the 89 and 05 vintages. There are 100-pointers like 2010 Montrose, and wines suited for tomorrow night s dinner, like 82 Pichon Lalande or 89 Ducru. For the claret lover, there is something here for everyone. THE MAGNIFICENT PRIVATE CELLAR OF LEE WEINTRAUB (LOTS ) The featured highlight of this auction is the cellar of Lee Weintraub a friend of Zachys for many years. Though his primary love is Bordeaux, his interest broadened to include other regions. A dedicated member of the Bacchus Society, Commanderie de Bordeaux, and other food and wine groups, Lee has amassed a cellar beyond compare. He caught the collector bug just in time for the 82 Bordeaux after the purchase of a case of 1982 Pichon Lalande, but his collection represents knockout wines from every vintage. He believes it is important to find the charms in every vintage, not just the greats. Bordeaux vintages of 86, 89, 90, 95, 96, 98 Right Bank, 00, 03 Left Bank, 05, 09 and 10, highlights abound. MORE FROM THE EXCELLENCE COLLECTION (LOTS ) Those that follow Zachys auctions closely will recognize this cellar from the March La Paulee auction. Bordeaux is a highlight here, with bottles that are decades, and sometimes nearly a century, old. The 1945 vintage to some, the greatest vintage of the 20th-century is in strong supply, as is the 47, 49, 59, and 61, all of which are contenders for best ever. The Burgundy is just as strong with DRC from 85, 88, and 90 and a large offering of Leroy, Rousseau, Dugat, Mortet and more. Greats from other regions make an appearance, too, from Chave to Guigal to Harlan, Yquem, and even Hill of Grace. 7

8 Raiding the Reserve Cellar Zachys is pleased to feature our new dinner series Raiding the Reserve Cellar. These bespoke dinners will provide guests with rare opportunities to indulge in comparative tastings of the greatest wines ever made. From a DRC Richebourg vertical to a Château Latour vertical going back to the 1911 vintage, complete with President Frédéric Engerer in attendance. These dinners are always highly soughtafter and very exclusive. We limit each dinner to 14 guests, so everyone can fully experience the wines.
