Austrian wines can be paired with food like no other and the new wines with lower alcohol content go marvellously hand-in-hand with the trend towards healthier dishes and more vegetables. His crystal clear, mineral wines from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling seem to be chiselled out of the limestone soils in which they grow. Markus is currently one of the most successful Austrian wine exporters to the UK, USA and Asian countries like Japan and has been accepted into the prestigious vintner s association Traditionsweingüter Österreich. History/Family: The Huber family was a small-scale wine producer for several generations until Markus took over in the early 000s. He has since dramatically expanded the vineyard area from hectares to 0. His family, including his parents and brother Michael, have actively worked and supported him on the way. Together, they built a well-equipped, modern winery to accommodate the new scale. The Huber wines are among the purest and most crystalline wines from Austria. Terroir/Soil: The Traisental region (between Krems and St. Pölten) comprises the last foothills of the Limestone Alps. Most of the vineyards are situated on east-facing red limestone slopes that benefit from the cool down draughts from the Alps. Good aeration and sun exposure ensure that grapes can be harvested very ripe and clean with no influece of botrytis. The resulting wines are pure and brilliant in style. In the lower parts of the terraced vineyards Obere Steigen and Alte Setzen one also finds pockets of loess deposits, which lend wines a bit more body and creaminess. Alte Setzen and the limestone dominated Berg vineyard has been classified by the Traditionsweingüter Österreich as an Erste ÖTW Lage the local equivalent of a grand cru. Portfolio: Markus Huber makes two ranges of wines. The HUGO (HUber to GO) is a light-footed easydrinking range of wines produced from grapes sourced from contracted winegrowers. The Grüner Veltliner HUGO is a lovely, refreshing wine with excellent varietal character for everyday enjoyment. The Sparkling Rosé HUGO is another pleasurable quaffer that beguiles with sweet spicy flavours. The estate wines from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are another story entirely. They are all handpicked, even the classic standards that appear under the name Terrassen which are selected from young vines on the terraced vineyard slopes. The single-vineyard wines Grüner Veltliner Obere Steigen and Riesling Engelsberg offer increased

3 mineral expression and substance. The over-0-year-old Grüner Veltliner vines in the Alte Setzen vineyard yield wines with a creamy, deep structure. The vineyard Berg is located at the highest point of the terraced slope where the vines are more exposed more to both the sun and cooler night temperatures. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from Berg can hang longer on the vine and this is reflected in the impressive intensity and complexity of the wines. Next to dry wines, Markus also produces an incredibly well balanced Riesling ice wine in suitable special years and a sweet Spätlese called Red Dolomite is made exclusively for the Chinese market. Success: Despite his young age, Markus Huber has already won numerous national and international accolades: Best White Wine Producer at the London International Wine & Spirits Competition, the Wunderkind award from Decanter, and Vintner of the Year from Austria s leading wine magazine Falstaff. Their portfolio reaches from top powerful single vineyard wines to really great value wnes at the entry level.leth is a member of the prestigious vintners association Traditionsweingüter Österreich. History/Family: The two Leth brothers Franz II and Erich currently manage the estate. Franz II is the business and marketing manager, while Erich is in charge of the vineyards. After completely the winemaking high school and gathering experience at renowned wineries such as Künstler in Germany, son Franz III has returned home to take over vinification responsibilities. Terroir/Soil: The Leth vineyards are located on the massive loess bench of Wagram are mostly exposed to south. The predominantly south-facing slopes warm quickly during daytime lending power and creaminess to the wines. Although 0% of Leth s vineyards are planted with Grüner Veltliner, cool climate red wine varieties like Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Pinot Noir also bring excellent results. The Leth family is also famed for their living vine museum that was created by grandfather Leth: one vineyard behind the winery is planted with 00 different grape varieties, many of them rare and nearly extinct. A true viticultural treasure! Portfolio: The most outstanding wines in the Leth portfolio are the single-vineyard wines. These vineyards have been classified by the Traditionsweingüter as Erste Lage (grand cru) vineyards. Brunnthal and Scheiben are prime vineyards that deliver powerful wines with deep mineral character and tremendous aroma complexity that have the capacity to age gracefully in the bottle for several years. The Schafflerberg wines and the entry level Klassik Grüner Veltliner offer outstanding quality with good varietal and regional typicity for very modest prices. Roter Veltliner is a rare autochthone grape specialty found nearly only in the Wagram wine region. The variety is distinguished by delicate sweet fruit and floral aromas and in the Scheiben vineyard it gains a creamy depth and complexity that continues to increase with bottle maturation. The high

5 demand for their Roter Veltliner wines has inspired the Leth family to plant more of this variety. The talented, young Franz III demonstrates a very good hand with cool climate red wines and the have improved drastically since he has become the winemaker. Terroir/Soil: Each variety and each style finds the perfect aspect, soil and microclimate that are reflected with astounding precision in the broad spectrum of wines. Along banks of the Danube River, alluvial gravel soils in sun-exposed sites offer ideal preconditions for complex, fine-grained red wines. Some of the best white wines are sourced from the slopes of the Göttweiger Berg where the wines benefit from heavier or limestone based soils. Others are sourced from granite and gneiss soils from prime sites like Silberbichl. His charming Zweigelts are listed in many of the top restaurants in and outside of Austria. It s a bit of an insider s secret that Gerhard s true passion is Pinot Noir. Next to red wine, he also produces a delicious portfolio of white wines with a strong focus on Grüner Veltliner and Chardonnay. History/Family: The Markowitsch family has produced wine for many generations. It was initially a mixed agriculture farm, but when Gerhard took it over from his father, the focus became wine only. In 00 they built one of the most modern wineries in Austria in order to meet the needs of their vineyard expansion as well as their high quality aspirations. Gerhard s wife Christine is in charge of office administration and supports Gerhard s journey to further grow the family enterprise and excel in producing some of the finest red and white wines found in Austria. Terroir/Soil: The Carnuntum region is located just east of Vienna between Vienna and the Slovakian border. The estate s vineyards are nestled between two mountain chains on either side of the Danube River, which channel airflow and provide vines with good aeration. The Leitha Mountains to the south mitigate the very warm Pannonian climate influences, while the Arbesthaler Hills protect the region from cold northerly winds. The soils offer alluvial gravelly lands on the valley floor as well as more compact loess on the slopes. Top vineyards such as Rosenberg and Scheibner also have quite a high degree of lime content. Portfolio: Gerhard Markowitsch produces an impressive portfolio of wines that include nearly every dry wine style you could desire. Among the white wines are two fantastic Grüner Veltliners: an entry-level wine at a phenomenal price and a rich, creamy old vine (Alte Reben) edition. Particularly stunning are his Chardonnays, beginning with a stainless steel fermented version that exhibits astounding mineral character. His ripe, bold Sauvignon Blanc is also quite worthy of mention. For his value-oriented red Carnuntum Cuvée, he blends Zweigelt with a bit of youngvine Pinot Noir and other more exotic varieties. His most important red wine is a pure Zweigelt called Rubin Carnuntum that is matured in used oak barrels. Among the premium wines are a juicy Pinot Noir and complex Pinot Noir Reserve. He discovered his love for wine about twenty years ago when he produced his first Beerenauslese (BA) and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) in the famous wine village of Illmitz on east side of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. He is now internationally one of the most highly acclaimed sweet winemakers in the world and is praised by critics for his highly elegant, pure and well-balanced wines. History/Family: Hans and his wife Lisa are first-generation winemakers. Hans quit his regular job to do what he can do best: produce elegant, classy sweet wines in the Seewinkel area on the east side of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. Hans tends the vineyards and makes the wines, while Lisa is in charge of marketing and administrative duties. Terroir/Soil: The Seewinkel area of Burgenland is one of the few places in the world next to Tokay and Sauternes where noble rot occurs nearly every year. The influence of the warm Pannonian climate as well Lake Neusiedl (the largest endorheic lake in Central Europe) and its surrounding small salt ponds provide a perfect climate for desirable fungal infection of grapes for noble sweet wine production. The reed belt that surrounds the large shallow lake is used to make mats for drying grapes for the production of another local sweet wine specialty called Schilfwein. The soils are light, sandy, and well drained and impart a nearly salty mineral character to the wines. The cooler nights preserve aromas and the ever-important acidity that balances luscious sweetness. The Angerhof Tschida sweet wines are usually made out of varieties such as Welschriesling, Sämling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Muskat-Ottonel. Portfolio: Hans Tschida loves diversity. Although most famed for his sweet wine specialties, he also makes dry whites and full-bodied reds. The assortment varies from year to year, but usually begins with a Spätlese and an Auslese from Sämling which are wonderfully balanced. The truly sweet wines begin with Beerenauslese (BA) made either from Sämling and/or from Sauvignon blanc. Schilfwein is made from grapes that have not been affected by noble rot, but rather grapes that have been dried on reeds for a minimum period of two months before they are pressed. Schilfwein is also quite sweet, but delivers more primary fruit flavours than most of the TBA s, which have more caramel and honey flavours that stem from noble rot. Angerhof Tschida s top Schilfweins are made

11 from Muskat-Ottonel or sometimes even from the black grape variety Zweigelt. Hans has two favourite Trockenbeerenauslese: the TBA Sämling and the TBA Chardonnay, which are both vinified in stainless steel. In suitable years Hans also makes stunning ice wines from either Gelber Muskateller (Muscat blanc à petits grains) or Grüner Veltliner. All sweet wines are bottled in 0. l bottles, sometimes also in magnums. Success: There are not many wineries that have achieved more awards than Angerhof Tschida. His sweet wines usually score in the high 0s in national and international wine magazines such as Falstaff, Wine Spectator or Robert Parker s Wine Advocate.
