1 Woolsery WI Local Food Resource Woolsery WI created this guide to make it easier to find food producers in or near to the parish of Woolsery. Local people and visitors can then make an informed choice to support our farmers and producers. By no means complete, it will be updated regularly. As well as the individual producers below we are fortunate in this area to be well served by local outlets: Village shops: at Woolsery, Bucks Cross, Bradworthy, Hartland, Buckland Brewer and Welcombe, all of which supply some local products as do Johns of Instow and Appledore. Bideford also has excellent independent butchers and greengrocers. Farm shops: Barton Farm Shop at Merry Harriers, Woolsery, Langs Farm Shop near Parkham, Marshford Organics near Northam MARKETS These include Bideford, Holsworthy and Hartland Farmers Markets, Barnstaple Real Food Market, and the Christmas markets at The Big Sheep. Bideford: 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month, 9am-2pm (times may vary). From April to September on The Quay; October to March on Jubilee Square. Holsworthy: Every Wednesday morning, 9am-3pm, in the Town Square Hartland: 1st Sunday of the month, April to September, 10am-1pm, in the Parish Hall Barnstaple Real Food Market: 2nd Sunday of the month, 9am-3pm, in The Pannier Market The Big Sheep Saturdays in December, from 9am, at The Big Sheep, Abbotsham 1

2 FISH Brilliant Fish at Appledore have a stall at Hartland Farmers Market and other local events and sell hot and cold smoked fish. You can also phone or order online for lobster, crab, mackerel, bass and herring in season. Free delivery within 20 miles of Appledore brilliantfish@btinternet.com Dan the Fishman (Clovelly Fish) is a regular at Holsworthy, Bideford and Hartland Farmers Markets. You can also find him in Mill Street, Bideford on Fridays 9am-1pm, and on Appledore Quay from 4-5pm in spring and summer. Phone for latest choice of local landings dan@clovellyfish.co.uk Langs Farm Shop occasionally have fish landed in Clovelly and frozen the same day. MEAT Langs Traditional Farm Shop sell their own Ruby Red Beef, rare breed pork and bacon and lamb along with local venison in season. They will deliver or you can visit their shop. Opening hours Spring, Wed - Sat 10am-5pm, Summer (from 1 st May) 10-6 Tues to Sunday, Winter hours vary check website. It sells locally produced and sourced meat and poultry and also supplies Woolsery Shop Honey s at Parkham sells locally sourced meat and poultry and deliver to Woolsery, Clovelly and Hartland free of charge info@gehoney.co.uk 2

3 Cheristow Lavender in Hartland raise Devon Red Ruby beef cattle. Frozen meat is usually available at their tearoom, which also offers home-made food from their own produce. Fresh meat boxes are available 3-4 times a year contact the farm to find out the next availability cheristow@btinternet.com East Titchberry Farm, on National Trust land in Hartland raises Jacob sheep, Aberdeen Angus cattle, and Oxford Sandy and Black pigs. Lamb, beef and pork available by the box, direct from the farm or for delivery nationwide tclark748@btinternet.com Court Farm in Clovelly grazes Longhorn cattle on the hills around this famous neighbouring village. Farmer Piers Langdon says it has a distinctive texture and flavour, and the breed is the oldest in the UK. Available by the box direct from the farm pierslangdon@btconnect.com Kerry's Traditional Butchers in Bradworthy sells locally produced meat and her own sauces, jams and pickles Lizzy s Larder at Milton Damerel has local beef and lamb and often game such as frozen venison and pigeon breasts lizzy@lizzyslarder.co.uk Halsbury Barton at Buckland Brewer breeds and sells Jacob lamb, locally butchered. 4 MILK We continue to look for a local milk supply. Most milk we buy comes from three big distributors: Arla, Wiseman and Dairycrest who sell either under their own label or supermarket s own brands. You may come across milk from some Devon dairies under their own name, such as Dunns of Exbourne ( info@devondairy.co.uk). Their milk and butter is available at the Country Dairy Kitchen in Holsworthy, Langs Farm Shop, Browns Deli in Torrington and Market Cheeses in Holsworthy (see Cheese, below). YOGHURT Stapleton Farm yoghurt from Langtree is available from most supermarkets in our area and from Woolsery Shop contact@stapletonfarm.co.uk CHEESE Devon is wonderfully supplied with cheese makers. Parkham Farms, based in Woolsery, make West Country Cheddars, sold in many supermarkets, but keep an eye out at all the farmers markets and shops as there are many smaller, artisan cheese makers around. 5 Langs Farm Shop also offer a good variety of Curworthy cheeses, made near Okehampton ( CLOTTED CREAM Dunn s clotted cream can be bought from Langs and Market Cheeses. ICE CREAM Stapleton (see under Yoghurt) also makes Sainsbury s Taste the Difference ice cream range. Farmer Tom s Ice Cream from Dunstaple Farm at Holsworthy Beacon is widely available, including at Woolsery Shop and Langs dunstaple.icecream@googl .com Hocking s have been making ice cream since Look out for their distinctive vans around North Devon from March to October regular locations include Bideford Quay and Westward Ho! seafront. Find it at Barnstaple Real Food Market, Bideford Farmers Market, and local shops sam@tennacottdairy.co.uk EGGS Many local egg producers sell by the box at farm gates but we also have Limebury Farm Eggs ( ), between Woolsery and The Hoops Inn, which supplies free range eggs for a supermarket. Available at Woolsery Shop and direct from the farm. Langs Farm Shop (see above under Meat) sell their own free range hen and duck eggs. 5

6 VEGETABLES AND FRUIT You can get vegetables from Barton Farm Shop, Langs Farm Shop (often locally grown) and many farmers markets. Two local veg box delivery schemes are available: Marshford Organic Foods also run an organic retail shop on Churchill Way, Northam Local Farm Box (based near Ifracombe, but deliver free to Woolsery) Abbotsham Growers are an allotment group who often have surplus fruit and veg for sale via an honesty box at the allotment shed (below Abbotsham church). You can also buy local veg from the Gardeners Hut at Clovelly Court Gardens when in season (take change as it is often an honesty box!) Summer soft fruit is available at Talon, next to Merry Harriers crossroads, Woolsery - Joy Bell BREAD AND CAKES Red Dog Bakery at Black Torrington sells artisan bread at John s, The Old Bakery, Hartland, Nature s Nutrition on Mill St, Bideford and local farmers markets. They also run bread-making courses info@reddogbakery.co.uk The award winning Little Pantry in Woolsery sells savoury and sweet bakery products. Many local shops including Woolsery Shop stock Val Snape s home baking. Val also visits many local farmers markets and you 6

7 can buy from her house on Fridays The Green Brownie based near Woolsery makes delicious brownies and sells them at Hartland Farmers Market and festivals SWEET THINGS Chocolat de Caprine makes and sells chocolates made with cream from their own herd of goats. Their products can be found at Delicadevon at Westward Ho! ( info@delicadevon.co.uk). They also sell at farmers markets and food fairs caprinecapers@talktalk.net The Wonky Kitchen near Holsworthy Beacon makes high quality fresh cream fudge, available by mail order, at local delis, including Browns in Torrington, and some markets thewonkykitchen@gmail.com Copperhill Chocolates from Woolsery make handmade unique chocolates and special occasion cakes using quality ingredients. They are sold at Langs and many food festivals/markets copperhillchocolates@yahoo.co.uk You ll often find local honey at village shops, farmers markets and farm shops. Look out for Wendy s Bees who have hives in various places including Fairy Cross, available at The Big Sheep farmer s markets, Johns Deli and Langs. Browns Deli in Torrington are a supplier for Vivian's Honey Farm in Hatherleigh, and Hill View Honey from Pyworthy is a regular at Hartland Farmers Market. 7

8 BEER AND CIDER Watch out for local beer and cider in our local pubs Hartland, Parkham, and Bradworthy are the nearest, but we re looking forward to the reopening of Woolsery s own Farmer s Arms. In the meantime you can also buy bottles and kegs locally. Cider made in Parkham is available in season at Langs Farm Shop along with other Devon ciders and ales. Country Life Brewery makes and sells a range of ales direct from the Brewery Shop at the Big Sheep info@countrylifebrewery.com The Forge Brewery at Hartland info@forgebrewery.co.uk EATING OUT IN AND AROUND WOOLSERY Even when you can buy and cook all this wonderful food, sometimes it s nice to have someone put it together for you. There are many excellent pubs, cafes and restaurants in the area, some of which are mentioned previously in this guide as they are also retailers of locally made food and drink. Woolsery Fish and Chips is worth a particular mention.
