1 Special Edition January 2017 City of Citrus Heights CONNECTIONS 20 Special Edition Celebrating 20 Years of Cityhood 20 thanniversary
2 Happy 20 th Anniversary Citrus Heights! Happy 20 th Anniversary Citrus Heights! It has truly been an honor to have served this city as chief of police for the last eleven years and now, as Citrus Heights celebrates twenty years of incorporation, as city manager. While Citrus Heights may seem like a relatively young city, the area actually has a deep-rooted history dating back to the late 1800s and the Gold Rush days. While those were indeed exciting times made so by adventuresome folks, they had nothing on the small group of tenacious citizens who, in 1984, took on the daunting task of incorporating the community they loved. The County of Sacramento, opposing the incorporation of Citrus Heights, fought the effort at every turn. However, despite countless setbacks, this handful of tenacious men and women never gave up and thook their fight fought for incorporation all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. On January 1, 1997, after a 12-year battle with the county, Citrus Heights was finally incorporated. Since that time, working together, city council members, city staff, community volunteers, residents, and business owners have significantly contributed to the success of this now burgeoning municipality. Many of these achievements are highlighted in this special edition of Connections. The City is planning a host of celebratory festivities including the upcoming 20 th Anniversary Kick-off Celebration on January 12, taking place at the regularly scheduled City Council meeting. Then, on June 3 and this is something YOU WON T WANT TO MISS plan to attend our epic Citrus Heights 20 th Anniversary BLOCK PARTY! Details for both these events (and everything in between) can be found on the City s website: Wishing you all a safe, healthy New Year! Additional information on the early years of Citrus Heights can be found at: Top 20 Lists You can still participate! Three lists will be generated via social media throughout We encourage the community to submit their photo or idea digitally using #chturns20. Tweet for Things You Love About Citrus Heights this month! The Top 20 lists will be announced monthly: at the first City Council meeting of the month; on the City s website at via Notify Me Citrus Heights 20 th Anniversary ; and in the Citrus Heights Messenger! Over a thousand entries were received from local students ranging from first grade through eighth grade. The contest winners were selected by participating city council members, city staff, and Republic Services staff.
