1 Johnson County Iris & Daylily Society News An affiliate of the American Iris Society and the American Hemerocallis Society Volume 15, Issue 2 September, 2017 ALL plants must be priced for the sale. Woo Hoo!!! It is that time of year again. A time to add to your collections of beautiful iris and daylily plants for well below the average retail price. The sale will begin at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, September 9. Our location will once again be the JN Long Cultural Arts Complex cafeteria, 425 Granbury St. in Cleburne (right behind HEB). Members, please help with setup at the cafeteria on Friday, September 8th from 3-5 p.m. We will need to get the tables set up and the room ready for Saturday morning. If you possibly can, please bring your plants on Friday. Those who can t come on Friday, please plan to be there with your plants as early as 8:00 a.m. and no later than 8:30 Saturday morning for our 9:00 opening. Coffee and breakfast snacks will be available. We will be open for business from 9:00 a.m. until sold out or 2:00 p.m. As soon as you know which plants you will be bringing for the sale, please call ( ) or e- mail (iris.daylilies@gmail.com) Peggy with your list so we will have color photos of everything offered for sale. Preparing your plants for sale: Up to a week before the sale, dig plants that you will have multiples of. Dig the entire clump if it has been more than 3 years or if it is overcrowded. Lift the plant, shake off the excess soil and break apart the increases (parts that have leaves attached). With irises, the mother rhizomes, the ones with no leaves, may be discarded as they will not bloom again. The leaves should be trimmed into an inverted V to about 6-8 inches. Write the name of the iris on the CENTER leaf using a permanent marker (Sharpie). The outside leaves will turn brown and could fall off before buyer has time to plant it. Please do not write the name across multiple leaves. The roots may also be trimmed to make planting easier. Grasp the roots below the rhizome and trim away anything below your fist. Now, put all your rhizomes into a tub of water which has a squirt of dish soap and 10% bleach (1 cup bleach per gallon of water). Let the rhizomes soak for about 30 minutes, then scrub the loose dirt with a soft brush. Rinse in clear water and place in a shady spot to dry. Instructions on preparing plants as well as a pricing guide may be found on page 19 of your JCI&DS yearbook Instructions for digging and dividing daylilies are very similar. Double fans are preferred over singles unless the singles are large. Use the same 10% bleach formula for soaking the daylilies. An easy way to label daylilies is to tie survey flagging tape around them and write the name on the tape.
2 Officer and Committee Chair Reports President s Report by Vicki Howard Last month s bingo was a lot of fun. Hope everyone enjoyed it. September will be our plant sale. Be sure to let Peggy know what you will be bringing so she can get pictures ready. Please be sure to clean your irises and don t forget to price them. Membership Report by Anita Goodale The Johnson County Iris & Daylily Society met for the monthly meeting on August 12, 2017 in the conference room of The United Cooperative Services building in Cleburne. Non-sweet: Sharon Bartlett and Sue Ripley. Drinks: Glenn Huddleston and Ricky Howard. Newsletter Report by Peggy Cathey For all members and especially our officers and committee chairs, PLEASE send your articles and club reports to me by the 20th of the month deadline. It is very hard to get the newsletter Page 2 ready on time each month and it helps SO much when the club reports are sent in on time. MANY times I have had the newsletter all done, and then a report will come in late and I have to re-do everything to make it all fit. I have been doing the newsletter for almost 10 years now and it is getting very hard to come up with interesting articles each month. I need everyone s help. Please write an article, submit recipes, tell us about your favorite iris or daylily and send them to me for the newsletter. It can be about anything you think our members would be interested in. It doesn t have to be strictly about irises or daylilies. We get compliments ALL the time about our club newsletter, so help me keep it going. Rebloomer Report by Gailmae Suite The reports of reblooming iris in August are Chartered Course by Gisele McCurdy, Lady Leigh and Oh Carol blooming at JN Long, reported by Alden Nellis, and Ocean Pacific and Feedback by Gailmae Suite. 3 Page 3 Secretary s Report by Vickie Rigby August 12, 2017 CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was held at United Cooperative Services and called to order at high noon by President Vicki Howard. Membership: Membership Chairman Anita Goodale reported we currently have 48 members, 28 of which are here. Also present at the August meeting were 4 guests. Anita reported that she will have the annual yearbooks completed and ready for delivery in September. Photos of the new officers were taken. Business: Peggy Cathey reported that the air conditioned cafeteria at the J.N. Long Conference Center has been reserved for the plant sale at next month s meeting, September 9. Refreshments will be finger foods / desserts only for club members/ volunteers, etc. Perfect would be small sandwiches, and anything that would go with them, etc. Peggy also reported on the Region 17 Distinguished Service Award. Awarded via nomination only to someone who has served their Club, Region and AIS. If you have someone in mind, please write up your nomination and send to Peggy. There is a committee of 5 who will then vote and choose the appropriate winner. Peggy reminded everyone to complete the AIS 2017 top 25 Tall Bearded Iris Symposium Ballot. The ballot must be submitted to Peggy on or before September 1, Drawings for August AHS and AIS memberships resulted in the following: AHS: Won by Giselle McCurdy (who generously donated hers back to the Club to be awarded to someone at next month s meeting). AIS: Won by Vickie Rigby. :0) Thank you. Reblooming Report and Other: Gailmae Suite reported on lots of rebloomers and reminded everyone to be very exact in labeling the names of the reblooming iris. Her example was there are two very close resemblances: Yours Truly and Truly Yours, names are VERY close, but irises very different. So use caution. She also indicated that Historical Group in Arizona is looking for rhizomes by hybridizer Don Shepherd. If you have any, please let her or them know. Treasure s Report: The Treasurer s report was provided and included in the newsletter. No revisions were made so such reports were made a part of these minutes. PLEASURE: Great Potluck provided by Club members and enjoyed by everyone, then on to the finale BINGO. Everyone came home with more treasures than they came with what a great day! Mary Keeth brought cone flower pods so that anyone who wanted could try their luck at spreading some flowers for the butterflies. Monthly raffle (bird feeder) was one by Guest, Steve Barter. Now he s going to have to join! After much food and fun, the meeting was adjourned and the membership helped with clean-up. Respectfully submitted, Vickie Rigby, Secretary SALE Plant markers 25/8.00 Use paint pen, dark lead pencil, or outdoor rated label tape to keep track of all your iris and daylily varieties AIS Calendars $7.00 ea.
