2 In partnership with The Blick Center SPRING 2018 SESSION FEBRUARY, MARCH, APRIL, MAY 2018 The COLLEGE FOR LIVING gives opportunities throughout the year for individuals with developmental disabilities to take part in and explore the many local resources available in the community. Funded through Summit DD, this program offers citizens with disabilities a wide variety of activities to socialize, explore hobbies, or discover new interests. As the primary force in the community dedicated to inclusion, Summit DD believes that communities are stronger when they include everyone with or without a disability. Discover more about Summit DD at The Blick Center is a private, nonprofit, outpatient clinic that began in 1969 with a group of parents of children with developmental disabilities and a few volunteer professionals. Together, they developed the Clinic into a single, comprehensive source of diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and support group services to persons with developmental disabilities. 3 FEBRUARY CLASS DESCRIPTIONS #1 CHINESE NEW YEAR [LIMIT OF 22] February 24 (11:30 am to 1:30 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Feb 19] Location: Royal Buffet & Grill, 1930 Buchholzer Blvd, Akron (behind Chapel Hill Mall) Page 2 of 7 It is time to celebrate the Chinese New Year! You've been waiting for this one - all you can eat Chinese buffet. From soup to dessert - there is plenty here for you. The buffet allows you to try some Chinese foods you might never have tasted before, including sushi, and creating your own stir-fry, plus all the other favorites you have always loved. If time allows, a small craft will be done, along with time to socialize with your friends. See the story of Stanley Yelnats, a boy who has endured nothing but bad luck thanks to a curse placed on his great-great-grandfather. Holes was also made into a Disney movie by the same name. Please note dietary restrictions on the registration form. #3 REGAL MOVIE NIGHT [LIMIT OF 24] February 26 (6:00-9:30 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Feb 22] Location: Regal Independence Cinema, 1210 Independence Avenue, Akron (across for Chapel Hill Sears side). or Join us for Movie Night at the Regal Independence Theatre across from the closed Sears store at Chapel Hill. Participants will have a choice of two or three movies, which will be announced the day of the event. Cost of this event includes your movie ticket and a special popcorn/beverage combo. Participants may bring money to purchase extra items from the concession stand. Staff/guardians should check in upon arrival to find out the movie end times, to know when to pick up the participant. Please note dietary MARCH CLASS DESCRIPTIONS #4 BOWLING WITH FRIENDS [LIMIT OF 12] March 3 (9:00 am to 12:00 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Feb 28] Location: Stonehedge Family Fun Center, 580 E Cuyahoga Falls Avenue, Akron Instructors: Heather Campbell-Wilson Accompanying Staff: Must bring own $ if they plan to bowl with the participant. Emergency Contact # (to be used ONLY on day of event): If you like bowling, friends, and food, this class is right up your alley! Come spend the morning with us at Stonehedge Family Fun Center. Food will be provided by The Grille and includes hamburgers, hotdogs, wings, wraps, etc.). Please note dietary #5 DINNER AND MOVIE NIGHT [LIMIT OF 15] March 6 (5:30-9:30 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: March 2] Location: Drop Off: Steak N Shake, 4000 Medina Road, Akron Pick Up: Regal Cinema, 4020 Medina Road, Akron or We will dine at Steak N Shake and then take a short walk to the movie theatre. Participants should be able to take the walk to the theatre or arrange for their own transportation, as instructors are not allowed to drive. Movie choices are announced when you arrive. Staff/guardians should check in upon arrival to find out the movie end times, to know when to pick up the participant. Dinner and the movie ticket are included in the class price. Participants should bring extra money if they want to purchase concession items. Please note dietary

4 #6 BINGO NIGHT [LIMIT OF 10] March 9 (5:30-8:00 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Feb 28] Location: Panera Bread, 689 Howe Avenue, Cuyahoga Falls Instructors: Tami Mastrojohn Emergency Contact # (to be used ONLY on day of event): Page 3 of 7 Bingo, Bingo, Bingo! Let s play and win lots of prizes. We will also enjoy a Panera dinner (gluten-free items are also available). Please note dietary #7 VASE PAINTING [LIMIT OF 8] March 10 (10:15 am to 12:15 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Feb 28] Location: Studio Arts and Glass, 7495 Strauss Avenue, NW, North Canton Instructors: Heather Campbell-Wilson Accompanying Staff: Will not be permitted to participate in the painting activity. Emergency Contact # (to be used ONLY on day of event): With the assistance of a painting instructor, participants will create their very own painted vase. In addition to the vase, participants will also make flowers for their hand painted vase. There will also be an opportunity to see various stained glass, pottery, and other art created in the studio. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. Participants can bring spending money if they wish to purchase items from the studio s gift shop. Please note dietary #8 SPRING WREATH [LIMIT OF 8] March 12 (6:30-8:00 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: March 2] Location: Pat Catan s, 570 Howe Avenue, Cuyahoga Falls Instructors: Sarah McCrory and Sara Schismenos Accompanying Staff: Must bring own $ if they plan to participate. The first will feature carrots for the upcoming Easter holiday, the other wreath will feature some beautiful spring colors and flowers for a fun spring wreath. Do not be surprised when we throw in another Easter surprise! Chips and juice will be served during the activity. Please note dietary #9 ST. PATTY S DAY DINNER/CRAFT [LIMIT OF 17] March 15 (5:30-7:30 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: March 9] Location: The Waterloo Restaurant, 423 E Waterloo Road, Akron Join us in celebrating St Patty's Day early at the Waterloo Restaurant. We will have a full meal of corned beef, cabbage, roasted potatoes, beverage, plus dessert. After dinner, we'll clear the tables and each participant will make a small craft. Please sign up for this class only if you like corned beef and cabbage dinners as no substitutions can made. Please indicate on the registration form if an accompanying person will be dining with us. This is needed a for seat count. Accompanying persons may order from menu at their own cost. Please note dietary #10 HARTVILLE SHOPPING & LUNCH [LIMIT OF 20] March 24 (9:30 am to 1:30 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: March 19] Location: Drop Off: Hartville Market Place-Flea Market, 1289 Edison Street NW (aka RT 619), Hartville Pick Up: Hartville Kitchen, 1015 Edison Street NW, (aka 619), Hartville or Join us as we shop our way through Hartville Market Place looking for that special 'treasure' for yourself, as well as do some wonderful windowshopping. After shopping, we'll relax and enjoy a delicious lunch at the Hartville Kitchen. Dress appropriately for the weather as we will walk the short distance to the restaurant. Both sites are located on the same property. Participants should dress for the weather and be able to take the walk to the restaurant or arrange for their own transportation as instructors are not permitted to drive you there. Participants will receive $5 for spending money at the Market Place, and can also bring extra money for shopping. PLEASE NOTE: Please be on time for this event as we cannot hold the group up from shopping. If you are going to be late, please call the instructors and let them know, and the instructors can then tell you where to meet the group or have someone meet you at the door. Cell phone reception is not always good at the Hartville Market, so if you cannot get ahold of the instructors, you can meet the group at the Hartville Kitchen for the lunch portion of the activity (12:00 pm). 5 Page 4 of 7 #11 MEXICAN DINNER/MOVIE NIGHT [LIMIT OF 18] April 10 (5:30-9:30 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 5] Location: Drop Off: El Fogon Mexican Restaurant, 1080 Interstate Pkwy, Akron (near the Arlington Street expressway exit) Pick Up: Regal Interstate Park Stadium, 1089 Interstate Pkwy, Akron (near the Arlington Street expressway exit) Enjoy dinner at El Fogon Mexican Restaurant, and then a movie at the Regal Interstate Park Stadium. Participants will have a choice of 2-3 movies depending on start/end times. Participants should be able to walk to the theatre or arrange for their own transportation as instructors are not permitted to drive you there. Participants can bring their own money to purchase concession items at the theater. Please indicate on the registration form if an accompanying person will be dining with us. Please note dietary #13 SCENIC VALLEY RAILROAD [LIMIT OF 10] April 15 (10:30 am to 2:45 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 11] Location: Akron Northside Station, 27 Ridge Street, Akron Instructors: Heather Campbell-Wilson and Nicole Clark Accompanying Staff: No accompanying persons permitted due to seating limitations. Emergency Contact # (to be used ONLY on day of event): or All aboard for exploration of the natural scenery and wildlife in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We will depart from and return to the Akron Northside Station. Lunch will be provided via the train concession car (options include: hotdog w/chips, nachos and cheese, cheese and grapes, veggies w/dip, sandwiches, beverage). Due to seating limitations, accompanying persons will not be permitted to attend. Please note dietary restrictions on the registration form. #14 SPRING PAINTING AT PANERA [LIMIT OF 8] April 20 (5:30-8:00 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 13] Location: Panera Bread, 689 Howe Avenue, Cuyahoga Falls Instructors: Tami Mastrojohn Emergency Contact # (to be used ONLY on day of event): Spring oh how we look forward to its blossoms and blooms! Let s get together and capture those blooms and other spring-themes on canvas. We will also enjoy a Panera dinner (gluten-free items are also available). Please note dietary #15 GIRLS GLAM DAY [LIMIT OF 12] April 21 (9:00 am to 12:00 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 13] Location: Drop Off: StowNut Donut, 3055 Graham Road, Stow Pick Up: Vimi s Nail Spa, 3071 Graham Road, Stow No nail services. Do not delay - sign up for Glam Day! We will start off with breakfast at StowNut Donut & Diner, a 1950's style diner, and then get your glam on with a manicure at Vimi's Nail Spa. Both locations are in the same plaza located at Oregon Corners, at the intersections of Fishcreek and Graham Roads (look for PNC Bank and Dunkin Donuts which are in the same plaza). Cost of this event will be $30 due to pricing of services. Please be on time as we have made appointments and must adhere to nail salon times. Nail spa appointments will start at 10:30. If you have gel or shellac polish, please remove it before the activity, or you can bring $5 to have the nail salon remove it for you (the salon charges $5 to remove this type of polish). 6 #16 SPRING DANCE [LIMIT OF 20] April 21 (12:00-4:00 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 13] Location: Goodyear Metro Park (West Room), 2077 Newton Street, Akron Instructors: Mike Smeltz and Charlotte Morris Accompanying Staff: No $ needed. Emergency Contact # (to be used ONLY on day of event): or Page 5 of 7 Join us for a Spring Dance as we welcome the arrival of Spring. There will be music, dancing, and plenty of food and fun! Please note dietary #17 WASABI JAPANESE STEAKHOUSE [LIMIT OF 20] April 28 (4:00-6:00 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 23] Location: Wasabi Japanese Steakhouse, 150 Montrose Avenue (Restaurant Hill), Copley or Join us for a fabulous dinner experience at the Wasabi Japanese Restaurant in Montrose. You will have a choice of 5-6 dinner entrees that include soup, salad, appetizer shrimp, noodles, vegetables, and rice. All this great food plus the entertainment of the great chefs as they prepare the food at our table. Please indicate on the registration form if an accompanying person will be dining with us. Air Museum, 2260 International Pkwy, North Canton Instructors: Heather Campbell-Wilson Accompanying Staff: Must bring own $ for entry into the museum. Emergency Contact # (to be used ONLY on day of event): Join us for a fun morning at the MAPS Air Museum, a place to learn about the history of military aviation. Participants will enjoy a pancake and sausage breakfast, and have the opportunity to tour the museum. Participants should be able to walk independently and long distances. The museum is also wheelchair accessible. Please note dietary #19 CINCO DE MAYO DINNER [LIMIT OF 20] May 1 (5:30-7:30 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 26] Location: El Campasion Kitchen, 4360 Kent Road (RT 59), Stow Join us in celebrating Cinco de Mayo Day early on May 1, at the El Campasino Kitchen in Stow. We will enjoy a Mexican dinner and the festive restaurant atmosphere. After dinner, we'll clear the tables to socialize, and if time permits do a small craft activity. Please indicate on the registration form if an accompanying person will be dining with us. This is needed a for seat count. Accompanying persons may order from menu at their own cost. Please note dietary #20 RUBBER DUCKS BASEBALL [LIMIT OF 12] May 2 (6:15-9:15 pm) [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 25] Location: Canal Park, 300 S Main Street, Akron Instructors: Heather Campbell-Wilson and Nicole Clark Accompanying Staff: Must pay the class price (includes game ticket and food). Stadium concession dinner and a beverage are included in the class price. Participants can bring extra money for the fan/souvenir shop. We ask that you please dress according to the weather that day! Please note on the registration form if wheelchair seating is required so that seating arrangements can be made. For accompanying persons, please indicate on the registration form that you will be attending, so that we have an accurate seating count. Accompanying persons should pay the class price. In case of a rain out, participants will be contacted the day of the event, please provide the best number to reach you in case this situation occurs. With nails on the wood, a mason jar will be formed, and faux flowers used to decorate it. All supplies will be provided, and there will be various flowers to choose from. Join us for a Subway dinner and a movie at the Cinemark Theatre, located at Portage Crossings on State Road. This includes a Subway box including sub, chips, cookie & beverage. Please select the type of sub on the registration form. If no sub choice is made, we will select a turkey sub for you. There will be a choice of 2 or 3 movies, which will be announced the day of the event. Cost of this event includes your Subway dinner and movie ticket. Participants may bring additional money to purchase items from the concession stand. Please indicate on the registration form if an accompanying person will be dining with us. The participant needs to make arrangements for their own transportation. College for Living classes are opened only to Summit County residents who are eligible for Summit DD Board services and are at least 16 years of age. In event of a class cancellation or extraordinary circumstances, vouchers will be issued (no cash refunds will be given). Vouchers will be issued on a case-by-case basis and only with approval from the College for Living Program Administrator. You must contact Mike Smeltz, Committee Chair, 24 hours before the class, to be considered for a voucher. NOTE: Please note dietary restrictions below.
