UPDATE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016 ION Construction Update The UpTown Waterloo BIA hosted a General Membership Meeting on January 12, where The Region of Waterloo and Grandlinq gave a presentation and answered questions regarding upcoming ION construction in UpTown Waterloo. A big thank you to all businesses who attended this meeting. For those of you who were unable to attend, here are the main points that were discussed at the meeting: King Street in UpTown Waterloo, from William Street to Erb Street, will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning on or about Monday, February 8 for approximately nine months. Pedestrian access will be maintained. Businesses are encouraged to educate guests and clients about parking opportunities; a map of all parking lots is available online at A meeting will be held for all Hughes Lane businesses in February; more information will be sent via . The BIA is working with the Region of Waterloo and City of Waterloo on options for deliveries and garbage pick-up. The UpTown Waterloo BIA will host General Membership meetings every 2-3 months, to keep you up-to-date on ION construction in UpTown Waterloo. We will continue to communicate information about upcoming meetings through this newsletter, as well as e-blasts and messaging through block captains. If you see someone in trouble or are having challenges with marginalized persons, please contact Caleb Redekop: or the police: SNOW REMOVAL We ask that all business help in making sure that sidewalks surrounding businesses are kept clear of ice and snow. Your customers and neighbours will appreciate your efforts. A City by-law is in place to regulate the removal of snow and ice from sidewalks and walkways that surround buildings and roofs that overhang sidewalks. This by-law is enforced on a complaint and proactive basis. For more information about snow removal or to report a sidewalk not cleaned (only after 24 hours has passed from a snowfall), call the City s By-Law Enforcement: UPTOWN DOLLARS This past holiday season, we sold a record number of UpTown dollars: an outstanding 98% increase since the 2014 holiday season! The UpTown Dollar program provides a wonderful way to help keep shoppers and money in the UpTown core and visitors love to use them. We continually hear of instances where visitors were disheartened to learn their dollars would not be accepted when they attempted to use them, resulting in a frustrating experience. We all must work together to ensure this does not happen and that guests to UpTown Waterloo have a positive experience here. We would like to remind businesses to please ensure your staff know to treat UpTown Dollars as cash during a transaction. Deposit UpTown Dollars at your bank as you would a cheque. The only business that cannot accept UpTown Dollars is the LCBO. All other UpTown businesses are strongly encouraged to accept them.
