2 Quality and Product News: Baby Greens Update: Both conventional & Organic Wild Arugula, Spring Mix & Baby Spinach supplies are limited from either mildew or heat/wind damage in Monterey County. A temporary price increase in effect from all shippers. Belgian Endive update: Availability remains very limited for local White Endive. Old root yield is very low; grower holding back harvest this week. Expect this issue to run until sometime in October when new roots will be ready for harvest. We have a limited amount of imported product to cover sales. Because of the shortage of White, our supplier, California Endive, sold out of all their other products so we did not get a Saturday delivery; next delivery is expected Wednesday. Cilantro: High temperatures have caused quality issues; supplies are still limited & market is still up! County Line Lettuce Update: County Line will have a limited amount of Baby Mixed Lettuce for delivery on Tuesday. We are filling in as best we can with Coke Farms & Faurot Ranch Baby Mixed Lettuce. Lemon Update: Chilean, MX & a limited amount of CA grown Lemons all in stock. Overall market remains hot; no relief expected for weeks. Organic is no exception, market is hot, with fair quality at best coming mostly out of MX. Mangoes: Now using CA grown Keitt variety for the next month; remember that when ripe the Keitt may look green, but inside you ll be rewarded with sweet, lush, delicious orange fruit. Stonefruit Update: Frog Hollow s Organic Yellow Peach variety now is Cal Red, the last variety of the Summer, and one rightly prized for its full on, Peach-packed flavor. 4 Farm Spotlight: Comanche Creek Farms Jim Miller started Comanche Creek Farms just south of Chico in Butte County. The farm is located in the Northern Sacramento Valley in a riparian area between Highway 5 and 99 where the soil is full of minerals. Butte Creek runs nearby and the overflow has greatly enriched the soil over the years. The deep-seated philosophy underlying the farm is a great respect for the environment and this has led to the adoption of many organic methods of farming. Jim grows cover crops to aid and maintain soil fertility. He uses only natural methods of pest control and recycles natural materials back into the soil. The initial desire was to grow the best tasting and healthiest produce possible for the Miller family. One year Jim and his family were eating at Mendocino restaurant and knew their Comanche Creek farm tomatoes were much better than what the restaurant was serving. The chef agreed and a business was born. Experimenting to find the best vegetable varieties (Comanche Creek grows tomatoes, herbs, peppers, squash and melons, as well as other seasonal produce) for the farm lead to the capacity to supply more local restaurants. The farm owners are Andrew Brait, Judith Redmond, Paul Muller, Dru Rivers, Jenna Muller, and Amon Muller. With help from about 60 employees, Cheese & Specialty the farm produces an amazing diversity of vegetables, herbs, nuts, flowers, and fruits year-round. 7 !!!!!!!!!!!! Dear Greenleaf Customers, Starting Sept. 16, 2018, we will implement reduced Sunday service for all of our customers. This decision is based on an industry-wide labor shortage of drivers and warehouse workers. We understand similar labor issues have also impacted many of you. With a minimal influx of labor in the Bay Area and the rising cost of living, the local demand for drivers and food service workers has reached an all-time high. Our hourly drivers and warehouse staff are a critical part of our business. Their quality of life and driver safety is a significant priority for us. These jobs require heavy manual labor, lots of Bay Area traffic, long hours and often six days a week work schedule. They need time to rest as well as enjoy time with family and their community. This new service will reduce our current Sunday delivery from 22 routes to 8 routes based on driver availability. Unfortunately, some current Sunday customers will not be able to get their standard Sunday deliveries. We are committed to helping these customers receive enough product to get them through their Sunday business. To help ease this transition, we will also be offering will call services Friday s and Saturday s starting Sept. 14, We value every one of our customers.
