1 2001 Red and White Burgundy Opening Offer Post, Fax & Website Orders Only before 5pm Friday, 14th March Very attractive wines from the best producers Tollot-Beaut are one of the best domaines in Chorey. Their policy of low yields produces very good wine every year. Clockwise from top left: Jean Paul, Olivier, Nathalie, Alain and Jack Buy from the best producers and there are good to very good red and white wines, in a classic style. The reds are ripe and fragrant, and the whites are fresh and elegant. Prices are similar to last year. Burgundy continues to offer good value for money. CLASSIC REDS The cool Burgundian climate has produced typically elegant wines, with fragrant aromas of blackberries and cherries. On the palate they are ripe and fine with very good length of flavour. For some, such as Nicolas Potel and Jean Boillot, they resemble 1993: for others, such as Etienne Grivot, Most need cellaring for a short period of three or four years, after which they will make lovely drinking. CLASSIC WHITES The 2001 white wines have a fresh and finely balanced character, often quite similar to the lovely 2000 vintage but with lower yields. It was very successful in the Côte d Or and the Mâconnais. Look out for the best Mâconnais producers whose hard work is being rewarded with delicious wines. Most wines will be approachable in two or three years and make lovely mid-term drinking. RBU03 February 2003

2 REACTING TO THE WEATHER CONDITIONS: LOW YIELDS AND SELECTION The weather in 2001 posed a number of problems for the growers. Only those with the skill and intelligence to react to the conditions were able to overcome them and make very good wine. Low yields To obtain ripe grapes yields had to be kept low, because overall the vintage lacked a little sun. Growers who kept their vines healthy, so ensuring they had sufficient leaves to ripen the grapes, and who reduced their crop by removing excess bunches, were able to harvest ripe and healthy grapes. OUR SELECTION We spent three and a half weeks in Burgundy last November visiting over 60 suppliers. We found négociants less successful this year and therefore made a severe selection. At Jadot, for example, we tasted over 90 wines but chose only nine; however, we believe that those we bought are excellent. By and large it was the skill and flexibility of the smaller domaines who best adapted to the demands of the weather and were therefore most successful. However, we encourage you to read the detailed note on each wine as this is a more reliable guide to quality than broad generalisations. NEW PRODUCERS We continue to refine our choice of producers. We have dropped one who we felt was below par this year. We have bought from five new suppliers and a brief description of each follows: Moret-Nominé are an excellent small new company specialising in Meursault and Puligny, including an excellent Le Montrachet. We have one wine from Jean Boillot, called Puligny Montrachet Premier Cru, Clos de la Mouchère, a vineyard they own exclusively. Morey-Coffinet are a fine Domaine in Chassagne producing elegant wines. Cinderella Chassagne is often overlooked but we think this commune is producing some wonderful wines. Michel Bouzereau is a fine producer making rich yet balanced wines. Last but not least the famous de Montille Domaine at Volnay has undergone a renaissance and is now producing superlative wines under the guidance of Etienne de Montille. We are offering the excellent Pommard Premier Cru, Les Pézerolles. When demand exceeds supply Demand for the top wines is likely to be high. We share out oversubscribed wines as widely as possible down to a minimum practical level per member. Please be aware that some wines may sell out and we may have to ration orders to satisfy as many members as possible. Should your first choice be sold out, please indicate on the order form your preferred substitute. Alternatively, you can allow The Society to choose for you. Allowing substitution and/or suggesting a preferred alternative will help to increase the likelihood of receiving similar wines should your first choice be sold out, especially where wines are restricted to fewer than 12 bottles per member. A fantastic new find BU19871 Meursault Premier Cru, Genevrières (Moret-Nominé) Rich and honeyed wine from a top premier cru producing some of the most opulent wines of the whole commune BU21291 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Clos de la Garenne (Sauzet) From a stoney vineyard at the top of the slope, now mature at 27 years of age, this produced a honeyed wine in 2001 supported by a fine and mineral structure BU19881 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Folatières (Moret-Nominé) Intense and hazelnutty nose with a fine textured palate that caresses the mouth. Very good indeed BU21301 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Referts (Sauzet) Rich and powerful wine from two parcels of vines around 35 years old and aged for 11 months in barrel, a third of which were new Page 14

15 IN-BOND PRICE, UK DELIVERED BU19331 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Truffière (Colin-Deléger) A minuscule vineyard producing highly sought after wine. This is always a fine wine but Michel Colin excelled himself in this vintage producing exquisite, fine boned wines with good ageing potential BU21311 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Champ Canet (Sauzet) Very successful for Sauzet in 2001, this is a powerful and structured Champ Canet which needs time to show its full potential BU20311 Corton-Charlemagne, Grand Cru (Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils) Bouchard Père have 4 hectares of east-facing Corton Charlemagne in three different parcels. This is a very impressive grand cru, comprising a balanced palate where lightly honeyed fruit overlays a mineral structure and fresh acidity BU21321 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Combettes (Sauzet) Perfectly situated mid-slope, bordering Meursault Charmes, Sauzet s Combettes is considered an honorary grand cru. It spends a year in 40% new wood and is priced accordingly BU19181 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Bonneau du Martray) Superb quality again this year; Bonneau du Martray are on top form under the guiding hand of Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière. Peachy fruit on the nose and an elegant palate as smooth as polished marble BU20481 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils) From the vineyard immediately above Le Montrachet, Chevalier is often a little less powerful than its illustrious neighbour but shines with an extra sparkle from a seam of bright acidity Low stock: one dozen only per member. BU20711 Chevalier-Montrachet, Les Desmoiselles Grand Cru (Jadot) Magnificent wine of unparalleled length of flavour that stole the show at the Jadot tasting BU20491 Le Montrachet Grand Cru (Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils) Hand picking at Jadot Massive, powerful, hugely structured wine which needs time to shed its husk and reveal its exquisite kernel. Will be superb Low stock: one dozen only per member. BU19891 Le Montrachet Grand Cru (Moret-Nominé) Impressively structured wine, which is closed for the moment but one can discern the enormous potential of this leviathan Low stock: one dozen only per member.
