1 An Opening Offer of 2008 ed and hite Burgundy Orders by ebsite, Post and Fax only by 9pm,Tuesday 16th March 2010 Typical Burgundian tiled roof, Aloxe-Corton Low yields of ripe yet fresh wines with plenty of concentration Despite a poor spring and summer, excellent autumn weather from 14th September to the end of the harvest transformed the vintage produced low yields (20-30% less than 2007) of ripe and fleshy red and white wines with an attractive freshness. The unusual combination of concentrated wines with considerable weight and density yet lovely freshness, caused by maturation by evaporation, produces quite extrovert wines which can be enjoyed relatively early, but the best will keep well. The quality hierarchy is well respected, so trading up is worthwhile. As ever style and quality vary widely between producers. e encourage you to read the individual notes on the producers and the wines which give a better feel to how a wine tastes than broad generalisations. Prices down ith a more favourable exchange rate, the majority of prices are lower than last year. Strict selection e deal with only those producers we consider to be the best in their categories. They maintain lower yields than the average grower, and so their wines are always proportionately better than the reputation of the vintage because of their readiness to sacrifice yield to produce ripe and healthy grapes. 2 The weather, and how the best producers reacted to it The story of the year was that after a poor spring and summer, the crop was saved by low yields and an excellent autumn. Poor spring and summer May alternated between the cool, the warm and the wet producing a strong threat of mildew. Flowering took place in June (between 10th and 19th at Bonneau du Martray) in cool and frequently rainy conditions leading to poor fruit set. July alternated between the cool and the hot. August was poor. Low yields A combination of natural factors continually reduced yield, including coulure (poor fruit set) at flowering, terrible localised hail storms (26th July in the Côte D Or, and 7th and 15th August in the Mâconnais), and the north wind at harvest which reduced yield by about 10%. The best producers cut the crop Good growers do not sit idly by hoping for the best. Instead they speeded up the retarded ripening caused by the poor weather by cutting off grapes in July and August. Excellent autumn weather From 14th September the weather changed dramatically. Blue skies appeared, and a powerful north wind began to blow. The windy conditions dried out the vineyards, diminished the threat of fungal diseases such as mildew and botrytis, and accelerated the maturation process. Concentration by evaporation The yield was reduced by about 10% as part of the water content of the grapes evaporated, concentrating not only the sugar content, but the acidity too. During the more usual maturation by photosynthesis, acidity reduces as sugar rises. In 2008, the grapes are ripe yet fresh due to the higher than normal levels of sugar and acidity. Harvest Most began the harvest between 18th and 27th September in the Côte de Beaune and 26th September and 4th October in the Côte de Nuits. The wind had reduced the risk of rot. There was a little botrytis for some producers, normally in the younger and lower-lying vineyards, which is easily removed on sorting tables. Those who looked after their vineyards and kept the pressure of mildew and oidium at bay were able to harvest healthy grapes. All the wines listed here are available on our website This offer closes at 9pm, Tuesday 16th March, For information regarding this offer after this date please contact The Society on , or memberservices@thewinesociety.com ef MACONNAIS UK delivered, per dozen Domaine Saint Denis, Lugny Hubert Laferrère reports that 2008 has produced crisp wines from low yields, 48hl/ha, of healthy grapes. 1. BU45611 Mâcon-Chardonnay * 105 ich and honeyed nose. Palate round yet firm. This is a delightfully balanced wine of excellent quality. Bottled with a synthetic closure Domaine de la Soufrandise, Pouilly-Fuissé This domaine makes very well-balanced wines, which are assembled from over 20 different vineyard parcels, with the aid of their UK agent oy ichards. It is always a challenge to produce wines which show the opulence of this richly flavoured appellation but do not become top heavy. This domaine succeeds admirably. 2. BU45301 Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes * 145 ipe, rich yet balanced with an attractive freshness, this is an impressive Pouilly Page 2

3 Hubert Laferrère of Domaine Saint Denis ef Benjamin Leroux winemaker at Comte Armand COTE D O Ghislaine Barthod Comte Armand, Domaine des Epeneaux, Pommard Benjamin Leroux and his team worked hard over the summer. He took no holiday, and managed the work in the vineyard, aiming to reduce the crop to 30hl/ha, and remove excess leaves to improve air circulation and prevent disease. The change in the weather on 14th September was accompanied by a strong north wind which probably further reduced the yield by 10%. The selection for Clos des Epeneaux this year is more geological than by vine age. It contains wine made from the top and bottom parts of the Clos, averaging 50 and 55 years of age respectively. The remainder is declassified into their Pommard Premier Cru. 3. BU45641 Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux 270 Made from just 25hl/ha, this has fine, intense pinot aromas on the nose. The palate is currently a little closed but has plenty of concentration and ripe tannins which will give this a long life Domaine Denis Bachelet, Gevrey-Chambertin Denis Bachelet made superb wines in 2008 which are highly recommended. Very old vines and small yields together with a light hand in the cellar produce elegant and intensely flavoured wines. 4. BU45711 Côtes de Nuits Villages 105 Fresh, bright, pretty pinot BU45721 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 175 Lovely mid-weight Gevrey with elegance and finesse to the fore BU45731 Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Corbeaux Vieilles Vignes 255 Old vineyard planted in 1920 producing small, intensely flavoured berries which translate into exquisite, perfumed wine Domaine Ghislaine Barthod, Chambolle-Musigny Ghislaine Barthod has produced another lovely vintage here. These graceful wines are amongst the very best of the commune. 7. BU45411 Bourgogne ouge 65 Few Bourgognes are this well balanced. A baby Chambolle BU45421 Chambolle-Musigny 148 Pretty sweet fruit and fine boned structure. Lovely Chambolle ed wine hite wine * These wines feature in mixed cases on page 15 Page 3

4 ef 9. BU45431 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Beaux Bruns 243 This is one of the richest tasting Chambolles, with a little more flesh than most of the crus BU45451 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Cras 255 From very shallow soil barely covering the limestone rock, this is lean and mineral in its youth, but in time blossoms into one of the finest and most intensely flavoured of all Chambolles BU45441 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Combottes 260 Elegant, intensely flavoured wine with silky tannins Domaine Henri Boillot, Volnay Henri Boillot is making some of the very best Puligny available today. He works with low yields, 38hl/ha in 2008, and has the flexibility of mind to react to whatever the weather throws at him. He uses 350-litre barrels, instead of the usual 228-litre, of which 75% were new for Clos de la Mouchère, which he finds better preserves the natural carbon dioxide and gives just the subtlest hint of oak. 12. BU46051 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Perrières, Clos de la Mouchère 275 Made from 80-year-old vines planted on low-vigour rootstock, this is fine, elegant and has a very long finish. Superb Domaine Bonneau du Martray, Pernand-Vergelesses Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière reports that 2008 was a challenging year in the vineyard. A poor flowering was responsible for the low yields. Conditions favoured mildew so many interventions were necessary to avoid disease. 13. BU45821 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 398 Made from very small yields of 32hl/ha (authorized yield 48hl/ha). The aromas are fine and fresh and the palate is rich with very good length of flavour. Impressive Domaine Alain Burguet, Gevrey-Chambertin Alain is harvesting a little later than previously, and extracting a little less, which is producing slightly richer and rounder wines with sweeter tannins. 14. BU45651 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Favorites Vieilles Vignes 195 From vines over 60 years of age, this is ripe and rich Gevrey Domaine Camus-Bruchon, Savigny-lès-Beaune This domaine made very good 2008s. Luc Camus twice removed grapes in the vineyard over the summer, reducing yields to speed up the ripening because of the poor summer weather. The crop was thus reduced to 30% less than normal when the weather improved on 14th September and the wind and sun further reduced yields. He started picking on 27th September and harvested beautifully ripe grapes because of the low yields. You can taste the ripeness in the wines. 15. BU45191 Savigny-lès-Beaune Pimientiers 80 From vineyards planted in 1935, this is lovely red-fruit Savigny BU45201 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Grands Liards Vieilles Vignes * 85 From two parcels planted in 1913 and 1922 this is intensely flavoured wine with a soft and appealing palate BU45211 Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Gravains 85 Planted in 1971, this explodes with lovely pure pinot aromas. 8 ef 46. BU45931 Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Clos St Jacques 337 A wine that thrills not by its sheer size, but by the harmony of its elements, the intensity of its aromas and the gracefulness of its palate Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard, Chassagne-Montrachet For me this is one of the greatest white wine cellars in Burgundy, producing wines which rival the very best Puligny and Meursault made. Since 1989, Jean-Noël s daughter Caroline L Estimé has been making the wines. The wines are good every year, excellent examples of their type and never marked by new oak. They keep and develop beautifully. 47. 9 ef Domaine François Lamarche, Vosne-omanée The younger generation has taken over and revitalised the domaine. Low yields and severe fruit selection are producing serious wines worthy of your attention. 58. BU45391 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 330 ich, smoky nose and pretty palate with sweet tannins and generous fruit. A very good Clos de Vougeot BU45401 La Grande ue Grand Cru 700 Sandwiched between La omanée-conti and La Tâche, this superbly situated cru is now revealing its greatness as the new generation has taken over and reduced yields. One of the summits of Burgundy Domaine Leflaive, Puligny-Montrachet Domaine Leflaive is producing some of Burgundy s greatest white wines and we are lucky to have a larger allocation this year. These are exquisitely flavoured wines not blockbusters. Try to serve at 12 C, not stunned to neutrality at a fridge temperature of 4 C, and decant the wines to open up the flavours with oxygen. 60. BU44831 Bourgogne Blanc 120 Pretty and lively white Burgundy made for early drinking. Made from 19-year-old vines BU44911 Puligny-Montrachet 193 Appley wine, slightly honeyed, with a long and refreshing palate. 10 Bertrand Maume Arnaud Mortet Nicolas Potel ef Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru * - A step up in the hierarchy to grand cru this has another dimension compared to the premiers crus. Made from 33-year-old vines This wine is featured in mixed case OC2496 only. Domaine Maume, Gevrey-Chambertin Maume are a tiny domaine and because they are so little known they are very competitively priced. Their style is derived from old vines harvested very late producing round and generous reds which will appeal to those who sometimes find Burgundy a little austere. 65. BU45551 Gevrey-Chambertin * 105 ound, rich and generous Gevrey BU45561 Gevrey-Chambertin en Pallud 125 Slightly more structured wine than the straight village wine, Pallud is denser and more powerful BU45571 Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Lavaux St Jacques 248 This has a lovely freshness and verve to it. Situated in the cool valley behind the village, La Combe de Lavaux, the grapes retain a little more acidity BU45581 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 340 Only two barrels or 50 dozen bottles produced, we count ourselves lucky to be able to buy this excellent Charmes, which is full, powerful and extrovert. A joy BU45591 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 340 Big and structured wine, this has plenty of firm but ripe tannins which give this wine the greatest ageing potential of those in the cellar. It needs time but rewards it Page 10

11 ef Domaine De Montille, Volnay Etienne de Montille has made stunning 2008s. This is one of the best cellars in the vintage. The house style prizes elegance above all and there is minimal chaptalisation. For the red wines, Etienne varies the percentage of whole clusters admitted to the vats depending on the year. This year he felt the stems were ripe and so many of the wines are 100% whole cluster. Used by Domaines Potel, Dujac, De la omanée- Conti amongst others, the whole cluster technique, when appropriately used, promotes beautiful floral aromas, contributes sweetness to the palate, and a certain complexity of character not found in completely destemmed wines. 70. BU45311 Beaune Premier Cru Grèves 170 Very fine and stylish Grèves made in the supremely elegant de Montille style. Made with 66% whole clusters. Delicious BU45321 Volnay Premier Cru Champans 243 Lovely floral nose and superbly sweet palate, quite round with very ripe tannins. 66% whole clusters BU45331 Volnay Premier Cru Taillepieds 250 Outstanding Volnay, with fine nose, creamy palate and impressive length of flavour. 100% whole clusters BU45351 Pommard Premier Cru ugiens 310 Intense floral aromas and palate of great length. Again remarkable sweetness on the palate. 100% whole clusters BU45361 Vosne-omanée Premier Cru Malconsorts 500 Superb wine. The nose is still developing but the palate is beautifully balanced, very refined, with tannins of the utmost sweetness. A delight. 100% whole clusters BU45371 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Cailleret 380 Forming the northern boundary of grand cru Montrachet, this is an outstanding premier cru. emarkable elegance combined with impressive length of flavour, this is very fine indeed Domaine Denis Mortet, Gevrey-Chambertin Denis s son Arnaud is continuing his father s meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard, which included two green harvests in One in July, where he left six bunches per vine, and one in August where he left an average of just four and a half, resulting in a harvest of 35% less than normal. He was rewarded with healthy grapes averaging 12.5% potential alcohol. However, in the cellar he is extracting a little less than his father and reducing the new oak a little on the lesser wines. The wines are fresher and livelier than previously. 76. BU44931 Bourgogne Cuvée de Noble Souche 95 Fresh and lively black-fruit pinot, lightly oaked. Delicious BU44941 Marsannay Longeroies 135 Pretty fruit and a refreshing, elegant palate make this a delight to drink, and very moreish BU44951 Gevrey-Chambertin 225 Made from vines averaging 35 years of age, matured in 60% new oak, this is bright and attractive Gevrey BU44961 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 250 Made from a number of vineyards including En Deré and En Champs which average years of age, this is matured in 70% new oak. ipe, rich and densely flavoured ed wine hite wine * These wines feature in mixed cases on page 15 Page 11

He has split with the négociant company that owns the label Nicolas Potel, with which he now has no contact. He has set up in Beaune in an attractive old winery which he is steadily doing up. He has made very good 2008s. The wines come in numbered bottles conditioned with sealing wax instead of capsules. 84. BU44551 Bourgogne Pinot Noir Vieilles Vignes Maison Dieu * 44 Medium-bodied wine with fresh, bright fruit and light and balanced palate BU44561 Côtes de Nuits Villages Vieilles Vignes * 65 ipe fruit, discernible on both the nose and the palate. 13 Gérard Prudhon Christophe oumier Nathalie Tollot ef 91. BU46031 Puligny-Montrachet 160 Exceptionally good village Puligny, fine and elegant yet with good middle too BU46041 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Folatières 265 acy, vivid Puligny from a top hillside vineyard showing all the characteristic qualities of this great village Domaine Georges oumier, Chambolle-Musigny Two green harvests which removed the less ripe grapes, cut the yield and allowed the reduced crop to ripen are responsible for the success of the vintage here. They began on 27th September and harvested healthy grapes. 93. BU45051 Chambolle-Musigny 155 Perfumed, red-fruit pinot with a fresh and lively palate BU45061 Morey St Denis Premier Cru Clos de la Bussière Intense aromas and a soft, generous palate BU45071 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Cras Tight, mineral wine with verve and energy BU45081 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Amoureuses 700 Sensual, seductive wine of grand cru quality and priced accordingly BU45091 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 750 This rare wine is even rarer this year as only four and half barrels were produced instead of the usual seven. Structured cru with firm but ripe tannins needing time to blossom Etienne Sauzet, Puligny-Montrachet Gérard Boudot reports that an uneven flowering led to lowish yields and concentrated wines. A little botrytis developed in some of the vineyards (the less noble aspects were removed on the selection tables) so some wines possess a lightly honeyed character which is appealing. 98. BU45101 Chassagne-Montrachet 138 Made from the excellent Enceignères vineyard, this is a round and honeyed wine, very appealing BU45111 Puligny-Montrachet * 155 Made from nine different parcels this is a very representative Puligny. Lovely sweet fruit and light vanilla from the oak Jean-Marc Vincent, Santenay This is a wonderful cellar in I am full of admiration for Jean-Marc Vincent and his delightful wife Anne-Marie and their wines. Inheriting his grandfather s vines, Jean-Marc has made a huge success of this domaine through back-breaking work, huge ingenuity, radical thinking in the vineyard and all with very little money. He works with small yields and then extracts very little resulting in naturally balanced wines with a beautiful texture.
