1 NapaLife For those who live in Napa Valley and those who wish they did 1 An Insider s Look at Napa Valley Volume 13 Number 5 Jan. 29, 2018 Napa gets new FM station Low-power FM station KCMU-LP is now on the air in Napa at MHz. The Napa Radio Project station and almost perfectly blankets Napa, but no more, with its 100 watts from an antenna near Tulocay cemetery. The noncommercial station is the brainchild of Faith Ventrello and will focus on alternative music and local programming. It s licensed to the nonprofit Jean Arnold Group Foundation. They re not completely set up yet as they re waiting for some equipment but had to get on the air a few weeks ago to meet regulations. They re also waiting to receive their 501(c) nonprofit status. Ventrello expects the station to evolve, and she s open to ideas for programming. She s also looking for local winemakers and chefs to contribute IDs. You can find more on her Facebook page ( and faith@naparadio.org. Ventrello was a vice president at Capital Records and has other impressive experience. The call sign was once held by a public station in her home Seattle, where she worked. And she s also looking for a donation of a taller location for her antenna; it s only 30 feet high now and more height would make a big difference in coverage. Our weekly stint on KVON Every Thursday, Barry Martin invites me onto his morning program on KVON to talk about new developments in food and other topics we cover in NapaLife. That s at 1440 khz AM at 7:30 a.m. It s often an expansion of items from that week s issue. State & First by Maris to open pop up State & First by Maris Collective, the boutique retail store coming to First Street Napa, is opening a designer pop-up shop Saturday, January 27 at 10 a.m. in advance of the shop s grand opening this spring. Napa gets new FM radio station State & First Popshop, featuring a preview of what s to come in their permanent location, will be open for four weeks from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday. It will showcase designer brands that haven t been available for purchase in Napa Valley until now. They include Mac Apparel, Golden Goose, Leofler Randall, Clare V, Figue, Farmhouse Pottery, Mark Schneider, Tobi Tobin, Simon Hasan, Truss, Laurence Brabant Editions, Hiro Clark, Manda Heath, Shauns and The Great See The store is at 1214 First St. Deciphering Workmix Workmix is a work space that you can use with an hourly or daily pass or membership, but it also offers coffee, wine and some snacks. However, due to a weird combination of ABC and city rules, it has some limitations. Anyone can buy coffee and enjoy it in the front lobby, but only those over 21 can enter the work space. You can buy wine in the front, but can only consume it in the work area and only if you re a paying worker. Obviously, you can enjoy the wine in the meeting room, which is a nice place for groups up to 25. The wines start at $8 for a Spanish Tempranillo, $9 for a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and the same for a Prosecco plus local favorites like hardto-find Elizabeth Rose Chardonnay and Ghost Block Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Wine Company. It dispenses some wines via a machine that offers varying pours. The space also features local artists; at present, interesting gold-colored photographs from Venice on metal by Marissa Carlisle are on display. It will also host events, some open to the public. Get details at or Workmix is at 950 Randolph St., Napa.

It was formerly held in Petaluma. The festival is expected to attract more than 2,500 guests to learn from chefs, cheesemakers, cicerones, authors and more in interactive seminars and pairings. Instructors include cheese expert and author Janet Fletcher; Lassa Skinner, co-founder of Culture magazine; and Ian Winget, founder of Napa Valley Bitters. Topics range from pairing cheese and sparkling wine to an in-depth tasting and discussion of the ultimate mac and cheese. Parking is complimentary, and each seminar attendee will receive a year s subscription to Culture magazine, a publication for cheese lovers. Get tickets at News for the wine community Wildfire impact shows strong recovery The Wine Business Institute at Sonoma State University has released preliminary findings of its wildfire impact study of the North Coast wine industry, based on an early analysis of available economic data and a survey of more than 200 vineyard and winery stakeholders across Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties. The study was launched in October after inaccurate accounts of damage to the region s wineries and vineyards from wildfires. 3 While the wildfires were unprecedented in Northern California, the most significant impact was a slowdown in visitors. Key findings to date: 99.8 percent of vineyard acres in the North Coast region were unaffected by recent fires. 93 percent of wineries had no structural damage or long-term impact percent of the total crop value was recovered. 71 percent of respondents reported a drop in tasting room traffic compared to the same period last year. 62 percent of respondents reported a drop in tasting room sales compared to this period last year. Beginning in November, this trend reversed, with visitor numbers returning to or exceeding prior year for the same period. Based on historical data following natural disasters of this scale relative to the size of the region, local economies recover with no negative long-term effects. Napa Cellars returns to Napa sources Napa Cellars has been a bit of an enigma. The label bought years ago by Trinchero had a very valuable name, yet received little attention. It s always been an excellent value. I got some for a niece s ritzy charity function in Florida and the guests were blown away compared to what they normally were served at functions there. Now Trinchero has reintroduced the brand with labels that emphasize the Napa origins and prices still attractive for Napa County. The grapes come from Napa County, of course. The 2016 Sauvignon Blanc is $18, 2016 Chardonnay $20, 2015 Merlot $25 and 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon $32. NapaLife is published 50 times a year. The subscription rate is $50 per year for delivery. 4 Sonoma growers unveil sustainable label Sonoma County Winegrowers have introduced a supplemental wine label to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable winegrowing. Ferrani-Carano and Dutton Estate are releasing 24,000 cases of wine as the first demonstration. The TTB-approved label went through extensive consumer testing and proprietary research to measure effectiveness. The mark is available in a variety of colors to complement wine branding. It can be used by qualified Sonoma County growers and wineries starting with 2017 vintage. The annual fee to use the label is $150. 5 The book offers Henry VIII s life as a template for a life very well lived. Henry feels pretty strongly that he has inspired loud, obese, incoherent tyrants from his era to this very day, and he can bring that same level of success to each reader. Demsky s work has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times Magazine, and Better Homes and Gardens. He is a former editor and columnist with the Napa Valley Register.
